That thread is interesting... I've never tried ceramic, either. Dare I? Nahhh

Dunno Kent. Ceramic does have a following, but it doesn't seem to be the ceramic per se. More so the ceramic - after it's been sanded/had channels cut into it/roughed up in order to get it to wick. In other words: How do you get something that isn't inherently porous to act as if it is? Ditto for the attempts at quartz.

Ya know...crystals have chemically bonded water in them. I do not let students use them in pottery because they shatter and explode. The constant heat and cool repetition would make me worry...

Not to mention the bounce test every mod experiences at least once...

I can never quite get this YouTube video out of my mind. It's used silica rope under a microscope. It's pretty scary to think that pops and crackles might send a shard of this stuff up the air tube. Hopefully, it would stick to your tongue and be coughed out, not inhaled into the lungs. It's the first thing that came to mind when I saw quartz being discussed as a vaping medium. Quartz may be more stable and not susceptible to particle migration.

Uh yeah...I don't use silica rope either. We have something called "kiln wool" that is basically the same thing but fluffy. That stuff is nasty to use without work gloves. I'll just stick with cotton or rayon...

THIS^. I can't help but feel whoever had this idea may have had a little too much nicotine that day. And I don't even want to think about the quartz buying madness that will ensue if this catches on.

At one time I was a bit of a crystal hound and we have a large collection at home. My hair stood right on end when I realized this had all the makings of a quartz apocalypse.

With all the cotton-esk options we have now it surprises me that people would still use silica. My second fav is SS Mesh, but I could never get the wicks rolled right and relied on my bf to make them. That was super annoying. No big issues with mesh as long as it's fired correctly.
But really between regular cotton, rayon, and Japanese cotton, who needs silica?

I can't see quartz ever becoming a wicking material. It's not absorbent or anything so I don't quite see how or why that'd even be a thing lol.
