So i was looking at a review of the volcano brand of the Ego, and the reviewer mention the in the "basket" beneath the piercing plate there was another "wick" in the ceramic cup that was threaded from the surrounding basket material(nickel mesh?). I've been under the impression that the wick from the piercing plate "dripped" liquid on the coil and was heated to produce the vapor, thinking the coil was just a heating element of sorts. But it seems the wick from the piercing plate is really just transfer the liquid from the tank to another "wicking system" the nickel mesh and the wick in the coil?? So am i to understand the nickel mesh also acts like wicking material also? and the mesh transfers the liquid to an internal silica wick which leads to the coil? Basically the tank system is a wick to a wick transfer?

I had been thinking the more "bunched" up the wick hanging from the piercing plate was would improve direct transfer to that little coil, but is it better to spread it out more needing to feed the mesh surrounding the little cup?

There is a delicate balance with these things...hence the love/hate reviews.
1.Wick too high (burning taste) or too low (tank drainage)
2 Air passages are small and can become plugged (stiff and no flavor)

Here's a thread that has the parts arranged in an exploded view. (well done @goodsignal and @screwtape)

I know I'm not answering your question, but it seems like you're trying to do a bit of reverse-engineering to make it a better product.
