Great thread, really informative. New to the vaping game myself, Ego-T kit arrived yesterday and I replaced the wicks on both atomisers pretty much straight away, since the vapour production with RY4 BM2 e-liquid diminished rapidly over the first hour (I would have been very disappointed with the kit if I hadn't found this thread whilst waiting for it to be delivered).

Personally I don't use the PTB (my technique on YouTube), but with the new wicks I'm getting very satisfactory amounts of vapour. Thanks to SimpleCJ and everyone else who's posted in this thread, wouldn't have had the confidence to replace the wicks without your help.

i would really like to know where in the US i could find some silica wick like Denvish featured in his wick video. if anyone knows please share the info. he states its used for a paraffin lamp or a wood burner.

i ordered a length of silica rope from McMaster Carr but that stuff doesnt really hold together really well and is somewhat of a pain in the a** to work with. in the mean time, i tried using some of the wicking material from my CE2 clearomizers. while the CE2 wicks are easier to work with, theyre not quite thick enough to use a single strand and too thick to double up. i get a lot of inconsistency with flavor and vapor.

and as with the McMaster Carr rope, its hit or miss. it either doesnt wick enough or it floods.

aside from those, i tried the ego t mega dual coil cartomizers... bought a pack of 5. and i have only 1 out of those 5 that actually works worth a damn. the vapor production of it is good. but there is no flavor at all >=/

meh i will wait and see if someone has luck with it. would really like to find a hardware store that has it. im sure i could find it if i looked hard enough around lowes or something. rather turned off to ordering little onesies twosies online. places that do flat rate shipping killed it for me. a $5 item ends up costing $10-12 after shipping. no bueno IMO

I hear ya. That's why I was waiting to get it. I was planning on ordering some other stuff while I was ordering the silica.

To be honest, I have given up on the whole ego tank system. I have never had one work worth a crap. I have had some work for a day or two but then it tastes like crap. I try adjusting the wick, cleaning the attys but still the same. I have tried sr and lr resistance and still the same. I have a brand new lr and two brand new mega tanks that I have not used because they do not work. I just use cartos and get on with my life. I hope that someone will perfect the concept someday. I'm planning on selling them soon.

Tried Lowes, Ace Hardware and Home Depot but they don't stock it. Don't waste your time.

aah thanks for the heads up. ive only recently started using cartos. i like the simplicity of them. but my first 2 purchases with cartos didnt turn out well. i got the CE2 clearomizers and those worked for about 1 day each before turning to s#%@. then the charade with the ego mega dual coils... trying to order some of these recommended cartos off of vapingzone right now but i think their website is broken.. i just want something that works, longer than 1 day, and i dont have to f@#$ with every day after i get home from work.

Yeah it's a tricky operation - each atty seems to have its own independent requirements, even the two I got in my starter kit need slightly different thicknesses of the rope, and slightly different length cuts... and the two replacement attys I got from freedomvape need the rope to be much thicker.
All in all, it's a fiddly process, but when you get it right, you can get a good three to five days with dense vapour before you have to re-wick again. I'm quite enthusiastic in cleaning the attys (by dunking in boiled water) too, which I remove the needle plate to do. I've yet to have one eGo-T atty that's worked well for more than half-an-hour straight out of the box. It seems to be sometimes necessary to mess around with/reposition the coil too, which is dodgy since it'd be very easy to break the wire.

In terms of the rope, can't help you there - I have a local DIY shop that stocks fire rope in various thicknesses. Agree with your reservations about paying flat shipping for a $1 item - that's why I like freedomvape, the only UK supplier that seems to offer free shipping.

I've researched this thread at least 6 times and agree that it should be a sticky.

The mod works fantastically! I have a new eGoTXL set that's only 2 weeks old. Original atty's were not consistent or acceptable. One was so so and the other was restricted and weak on the draw. I followed the mod with the 3/8" silica rope and tea bags and they both vape like freight trains now.

The stock factory wick material I took out was basically nothing compared to what I threaded back into the needle plate.

I must add to some of the previous posts though... Do NOT jack around with the actual needle part (part that pierces the tank for fluid flow) and do not use pliers in a way that pit the needle plate against the outer cone housing. Use the cutouts on the sides of the plate to pull the thing out. It's pretty easy to modify a small screwdriver or other tool, (see paint can opener portion of the earliest threads), to get under the edge of the plate and pop it up. It takes a small amount of mechanical ability but is quite easy once you actually get the thing out once or twice. Putting it back in is the booger bear though - You have to align the wick back in the center hole to get to the heater element. If not, it will leak, no doubt. I'm going to experiment with some ideas and post back with results.

Hey MOD - Please sticky this thread, it's definately a winner!!!

Thank for the Great Idea with the paint can opener, I will try that next time I clean the atty. Just a thought for others that are having problems with the eGo-T, You might want to look at the eGo-C, the only one I know of now that sells it is Ovale. I bought one and it does work right out of the box and have been using it for a few days. I have filled 5 tanks and no leaking and you can replace just the atty inside the cone for only 5 Dollars. I think this new Ego-c is a winner. I had given up on the T but liked the tank cartridge idea so I tried the C and glad I did, this works like it should have to start with.

I dont think the price $5 is good. For ppl reading this tread its not an option since we use 1 atti with this mod for about 3+ months. If they dont lower the price heavily not going to change my T.

I personally have not had a T last any longer the 10 to 15 days Max. and then it cost me 12 to 15 Dollars to buy a new one, compared to under 5 Dollars for a eGo-t replaceable atty.

Was going to say the same thing. The T atty's are anywhere from $10-15ish and are a pain in the ... to clean. The C's seem much easier to deal with, as far as removing the spike plate and accessing the wick, and are 1/3 of the price. I don't know of any other atty's that are much cheaper than $5.

My wife recently moved from the tanks to just using a carto, but she has a few tank atties that are 9+ months old and still work fine. Between us both using the tanks, we never had one not last at least 30 days. Average was probably 2 months, and normally either the wick just wasn't right anymore, or I burned them up dry burning them. So I can't complain, it helped me stop smoking.

I think that great that the T's help you stop smoking. I go thru about 5 tanks a day and like I said they quit performing like they should in 5 to max 10 days. Yes they still work, but no good like when new, and to replace they cost a bundle compared to the C's. Just cleaning does no good unless you dry burn the coil and The T's are a pain to take apart and reassemble. Don't know yet but I think it will be easier on the C's.

Since this thread is quite worthless without lots of pics, I made some.

I got really frustrated while trying to make this work. The wick kept on falling apart while trying to get it through the needle plate. So I opted for just using one side of the ptb.

egowick01.jpg

Closed it up, by applying some heat from a lighter to the side sticking out.

egowick02.jpg

Got a bit too enthusiast with the fire as you can see. Fire and melthing stuff, can't really help myself.

And closed up the ptb end as well, with my lighter, pushed it together with my fingers after heating it.

egpwick03.jpg

I pushed this through the needle plate until it got stuck. And finished with all the remaining steps, to be able to vape once again.
