One thing that makes me wonder about it....... a friend of mine quit smoking a while back, just cold turkey. She went through all kinds of nastiness, including the coughing up yuck. So, it makes me curious that (SO FAR) the majority of quit-to-vaping doesn't really go through it. Just wondering.

That's a good point. Maybe it's ex smokers who don't vape who have this problem. It's been accepted for a long time that this will happen if you quit smoking. Kind of worrying in a way that you don't empty the crap if you switch to vaping...

I used to have to clear my throat several times a day when I smoked and my sinuses were always clogged up. I got winded after going up a flight of stairs and doing the most menial of chores. I used to have to use a CPAP machine at night so I wouldn't stop breathing.

The only time my throat gets scratchy since I started vaping (and it's not a real scratch per se) is when I need to drink water. My sinuses are clear now and I don't need to take antihistamines any more. I moved a heavy twin bed by myself yesterday from the living room to the bedroom in my one bedroom apartment and didn't have to crash to catch my breath (I'm 65 years old). I stopped using the CPAP machine early on my vaping journey because it was keeping me up at night and decided to take it off and found to my delight that I slept like a baby and breathed perfectly throughout the night. I don't toss and turn at all and the nightly trips to the bathroom are non-existent.

The body is a wondrous system and I believe that it processes the gunk out of our system through elimination not necessarily regurgitating through your throat and mouth.

I started vaping exclusively over 4 months ago after smoking 3-4 packs a day for over 42 years. One of the reasons I quit was the fact I was coughing a lot and coughing up phlegm. Since I've been vaping I've stopped coughing and never coughed up anything else. I thought I'd cough up all kinds of gross stuff when I quit, but I didn't.

We probably don't realize how much we coughed, just like we don't realize how loudly we snore. I smoked 1.5-2 p.a.d. for 33yrs. I did cough during my first 2 months. I did not hack anything up. I did start coughing again at 6 months for a day or two which is normal also. The only time I cough now is if I'm around burning trash or burning fields (down here in the south).

I wasn't worried or concerned about that, just an observation :) I like how RosaJ put it.

I had a sore throat for over a month... It was bad, i thought I quit too late and must have got throat cancer or something ( I am a paramedic, I knew smoking was horrible ) then for about a week I hacked up whatever junk was in the back of my throat. I cough up some junk now 6 months later but its really loose and sometimes tastes like strawberry bannana... or whatever I have been vaping.. LOL

What we need is some info from a Pulmonologist, a specialist in the respiratory tract.

I do know that cig smoke is hydroscopic, it absorbs moisture in the lungs and sticks there. Its also got a long (a really long) list of chemicals in it that would really make you wonder why you did it in the first place. Radon? Yup, its in there. Polonium-210? Yup.

This book - Environmental Tobacco Smoke: Measuring Exposures and Assessing Health Effects by National Research Council, 1986 - gave me the willies when I read it about 20 years ago, looking for a basic list of what exactly was *in* smoke.

According to the book, this is the main component of tobacco smoke: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Benzo(a)pyrene

I'm not trying to scare anyone and I am for sure in no way some know-it-all, but I took the time to do some very basic reading since I was curious. I am not a doctor, any sort of medical professional, or a llama. Ok maybe I'm a llama but thats personal.

Congrats to anyone thats stopped using tobacco, I gave it up too after many tries and Im enjoying vaping a lot. I'm new to it, but lurked here for a long time trying to figure out what gear would let me vape. As it turns out, pretty much anything can get someone started on the path away from tobacco.

I gummed up my coils and my mini protank II is tasting like crap, but thats just something to solve while my juices steep and others are shipped...vaping is enjoyable..it gives me something to fidget with. And I had one really heavy craving for a stinky recently but some hits off my EVOD and that was taken care of.

It also helps enormously that I'm not alone in this journey, there are thousands of you out there that are going through this all at the same time, so it sucks a little less to know I got lots of company.

So, at one time in the past while I was using tobacco (rolling Drum unfiltered, so those are like mini cigars) I got pretty sick with a heavy chest cold. At that time I took Mucinex and when that kicked in (take a dose of that and a LARGE glass of water, it will dry you out pretty good - NO more than two pills in 12 hours, 4 max a day), I'd go cough up some serious gunk.

Id make horrible noises in my bathroom, my roomie thought I was dying from hearing it. But each subsequent cough brought up more goo. I felt better and better each time. After a few days my cold went away, and I felt much better.

Anyone remember the commercial on Saturday Night Live for the Lungbrush? It was like that.

I absolutely have no idea if taking that while not sick with a cold would be of any benefit to anyone. What we need in the thread here is advice from a medical professional.

Anyway, my thought is for anyone wanting to loosen stuff in your lungs...got to do stuff that increases your lung capacity. I dont mean go jogging at full tilt, but walking would be fine. Get those lungs working.

The body has an amazing capacity to repair itself, and the first best step was just simply quitting tobacco. There is so much crap in it that it makes any repair efforts inside you difficult.

And keep in mind it took years to stick all that stuff in your lungs, its going to take time to get it out too.

Is there a Doctor in the house? Folks need your advice!

I have a dear friend that quit cold turkey about 3 months before I quit smoking and started using a vape...she asks me every time I see her when she will stop coughing up "fish eggs"...now I must admit that she did cough so badly before she quit I was afraid she would die on my floor and that the Dr had diagnosed her COPD about 3 years ago so the damage may be extreme in her case.

Fish eggs ROFL~ Yeah, those little gel like things....... That's about what all I may have coughed up. I did that when I smoked though. Not so much after starting to vape. But, I used to get bronchitis every flipping year, I haven't had it in a year now. Coincidentally, I have been vaping over a year now. I wonder if I may have coughed up most of the junk each year with the bronchitis? Possible.

I do! I do! So funny. So gross. And +1 for Mucinex with extra water.

Ok, you mentioned gummed up coils and bad taste.... have you done a dry burn on those? Helps tremendously.

I smoked for ~38 yrs at less than 1/2 pad. I quit just short of 3 months ago and only recently have my lungs begun to clean themselves out, but only small amounts and not often.

I'm with you on that one Silent Scream. My wife said she noticed immediately that I no longer cough in the mornings...meh, I never thought I coughed at all!

I agree with all you said, Agave.

The wife also says I snore, and I don't think I do. <sigh>

Yes, but *then* I read that I needed to rise the coils/wick off, which I did not do! DUH ME!

Im really new to vaping and it confuses and frightens me.

I did do a general cleaning, soak in vodak/rinse/dry burn, so I can do all that...just didnt know to rinse off any residual ash on the coils so I'll add that in to the routine.

I really think its more of an issue w/ mini protank IIs, the work ok for a bit and then...bleh. Ill get it sorted out, probably by grabbing a new tank or three...just have to pick a good one (no plastic).

Oh and some wire...and then decide on what sort of wick to get...oh and some new juices...wait i got 90ml of juice today...well, more is better isnt it...and and and.....

Need a seal of approval? You're in the wrong place. We'll all say GO FOR IT! Yeah, rinsing it helps. But the burntish taste will subside if you didn't.

I smoked up to 2 packs a day for over 40 years. I found vaping because I had developed horrible smoker's cough --morning, noon, night, during the night--which had to stop! It was at the point where when I laughed or took a deep breath it triggered the horrible, deep, rumbling, and raspy, old-lady-who's-been smoking for 80 years- voice to boot:(

Within a few weeks of vaping and cutting my cigarette smoking down to 5 or 6 a day instead of 2 packs was a tremendous relief! Now I'm down to 3, maybe 4 a day. I coughed up brown yuck for a few weeks which then subsided in about 4 weeks! Even though I still smoke a few cigs a day and vape the rest of the time, I don't cough up the brown- nasty smelling/tasting- phlegm that was a serious concern and sure I was going to die any day from the coughing!
I find now, that certain eliquids cause me to cough but it's not the same as "smoker's cough", and no raspy voice anymore - so I'm happy that my lungs seems to be repairing themselves :)
