i have had a total of 4 510 atomizers and 2 m401 atomizers "burn out" on me. They all give off this sort of metallic tasting and smelling vapor. Even after i have cleaned them thoroughly, and made sure there are no fibers from the carts left on the atty's. It's really disheartening when i have spent about $200 on these products and they're not working... :|:|:| ....frustrating eh?...
this has been a rather horrible week..

I think people are cleaning atomizers too much and drying them out. I never clean mine.
I agree. I don't do anything except blow them out once in awhile and let them drain out the excess liquid on a paper towel. Been vaping alittle over 4 months now and haven't lost a single atty yet. A couple don't work very well with carts but work fine for dripping. I do keep my eyes out for the untrimmed wick, if I see some I just cut it back with my small scissors and vape away.:)

After 3 months, I've only lost 2 attys so far. One was DOA and the other I killed through my own stupidity. I pulled all of the wick out, thinking it was stuck cart stuffing. That little disaster also took out a 510 battery.

I've never cleaned one. I just blow them out occasionally and take them off/drain them every night.

After nearly 2 years - my atomizer on my pen cig went out - so I thought. With some helpful tips from some great people, come to find out it was just clogged and caked with crud from time. (Yep - ignorance is bliss, what can I say?)

I did clean it up and it is now working quite well again - HOWEVER for the first several days it did have a metallic or actually in my case more of a 'plasticy' taste to it. Even when I just tried direct dripping on it the taste was still present.

Now though that taste is gone, it is producing a nice amount vapour just like the old days, and the flavor is top notch on whatever I'm using.

So... in the end I would also wonder if 'over-cleaning' could be causing some of your taste problems? You might try juicing up a nice cart, slapping on your atty, and trying to push through it for a few days (like 3 to 4) and see if it clears up the taste problems for you.

My .02

Take care,
- Hap

I have 2 that had a burnt wick so it absolutely had to be removed and they still vape as good as any other.

cleaning is the enemy
2 people for 13 weeks and we've only lost one atty directly after a cleaning. I have 2 that I have retired due to waining performance. I felt I got enough value out of them. Since making a nicostick, I'm thinking it was the batts causing the weakness.

The only atty I've lost so far was one that got a coke soak. Worked before the soak, didn't after it. It looks to me like keeping them wet and drained works better.

Have you ever seen what coke does to a penny?

I blow mine out every few days, but do a 30 second rubbing alcohol swish every 10 days or so and haven't had any problems. Same atty for about 2 months now.

In your bushes, watching you undress
Only lost two (both were 510's) and they were a direct result of cleaning and soaking!

One was lost due to rinsing in steaming hot water... the bridge lost its hold and broke free. The other worked perfectly, I just cleaned it with all the rest one night.. and it has never worked again.

I stopped cleaning/soaking mine. I'll give 'em a good blow-out, pull any gunk out, then drip, prime, and vape.

Man, I don't even want to think about how many attys I've gone through in the last two months since I started vaping.... I think in the beginning, I may have over-worked some of them from constant vaping (new toy syndrome). While others, I wrecked on my prototype nico-stick from adding solder to the contact pin of the connector (which I later found out wasn't necessary) and over-tightening them. But still others seem to die quickly no matter how careful I am with them (one died within two hours, and one was DOA.) I think the quality of atomizers can be pretty hit or miss.

The one I'm currently using is coming up on the one-week mark though, and it's still going strong (knock on wood) but it's the only one that's lasted more than 2 or 3 days. Hopefully, the worst is behind me.

I really wonder what people do to these things. I am a very very heavy vaper and I have only lost one atomizer in 5 months (It was a 510 and it blew within 2 weeks so I got a refund and I figure that one was just a dud). I have the very first 401 atomizer I ever bought and it is now like trying to suck start a bus, but it fires up fine. I think I have to +1 the people who say less is more when it comes to all the cleaning. I mostly just keep the threads and contacts clean. Rinse them with hot water and let them drain and dry once in a while and thats it. I have tried alcohol or vinegar (very diluted) soaks on a couple that are pretty clogged, but thats it. I would say dipping has a lot to do with it since I always let a dry atomizer soak up all it can before I use it, but people with the 901s/510/Pens... that don't get into all the heavy duty cleaning seem to report the same. For the cart folks the only thing I can think of is that they aren't letting the liquid wick from the cart all the way through the bridge to atomizer coil before firing them up. Maybe a drop or two on the bridge and then leave the full cart on the atomizer for 5-10 minutes when it is really dry from sitting overnight or after a cleaning would help.
