I usually rinse mine with hot water before I dry burn. If I don't, it tends to flame up.

In my protracted test of countless builds on Protanks I long recommended infrequent washes and dry burns. But I think you're onto something pt. I'm not a big fan of burning the juice off. I think this has a tendency to char pigments into the wick's weave. That has to impact the surface temperature and vaporization (attenuating it) and so less efficient.

More frequent brief rinses and restrained dry burns to clear residual moisture help preserve the wick apparently. Flow and flavor are well maintained. The interval varies with the tank/juice combo whether something like a Protank or an RDA but the principle is right. A few days of use in either. The slightest indication of flavor/color/flow change and I'm rinsing. Never dry burn 'till they're red hot just enough so I can dust off any remainder of residue not burned off. That's usually enough to get it where it needs to go. More often than not the washes just seem to improve the flow and flavor output. Otherwise I suspect a wind mismatch to the wick and it's time for a redo. Why struggle? Or lose the best possible vape? I guess I'm just spoiled.

Good luck all.

:)

I burn after every bottle of anything flavored and sometimes at half bottle when I change the battery. I hold the button let it glow bright orange then hold a bit longer and release. If it catches fire....great. I continue this until no vapor comes off. I blow cool... then if I am at home I might check the screws insert my small coil guide to ensure the hole is open. Put the cap on and vape away. Coils have been through this process for months and still going strong. Coil and wick stay nice and clean and flavor/vapor stays consistent.

There are many ways to skin the cat and everyone can experiment without fear that you can overheat the coil and ruin it. Find what is right for you and vape on....

Was going to buy/try some ReadyX way back when. But the cotton in the never ending new forms works just fine for me, is easy to rewick and dirt cheap, so I never took the plunge. Might be missing out on something, but don't feel like it, so doubt I'll ever take the plunge.

In my opinion, a big mistake!!

In my opinion, a big mistake!!

I would not go that far though. Somebody else mentioned a change in flavor profile when you switch from cotton (KGD or Muji) to RxW or vice versa. I thought this to be true until I went back to my standard built. 28 gauge wire, 8 turns on a 2.25 mm drill bit. That comes out at 1.2 ohm on a Kayfun. On an RDA it will be 1.3, because you add half a turn to the position of the posts.

2.25 mm coil is too small for the 3 mm RxW and too big for the 2 mm. Sure enough I changed my coil sizes to accommodate the wick. BIG mistake. I never got this to work right and went back to cotton just to discover how good cotton is.

Then it dawned on me to try the good old fashioned end overlap of two 2 mm RxW in my 2.25 mm coil.

OH YEAH! What a vape that is. I am using this now in my Prometey, Achilles, Trident, IGO-L and REOmizer and don't miss cotton at all anymore.

The only atty in which I cannot get this build to work right is the Kayfun - but I could not care less - Prometey and Achilles are better than the Kayfun anyway.

Cheers.

I forgot one thing, which really won me over to RxW.

Using cotton in an atty where you cannot see the juice level or in a bottom feeder and you lost track of your squonk timer :p you can easily get that nasty burnt tasting hit every once in a while, right?

Well, not so with RxW. from my experience I am getting an empty hit. Not burnt, not even scratchy. It's more like PG/VG only. No flavor. Then I know it is time to drip or squonk and I am good to go.

Cheers.

Your observation is right on. Nextel's nano fibers are like a million garden hoses in a single wick (the between spaces). It's flow rate is incomparable to any other wick media we use in vaping. But because it is directional compressing (deflecting) across it with a coil breaks its back. Like crimping a water hose. A hand wind is too inconsistent to avoid such an improper fit (loose turns or overly tight turns) and handicaps the product with an uneven, inefficient power delivery.

Because of its flow capacity Nextel requires an extremely efficient coil for it to reach it's full potential. A contact micro coil approaches a physical optimum of efficiency if wound with tension rather than forming; and, a proper wind like this closely matched to a Nextel wick's diameter will yield the best results in virtually any device.

With an appropriately tight fit and set a Nextel microcoil can deliver outstanding vapor and unmodified flavor result at relatively low power loads to high, the latter managed handily due to the wick's high heat tolerance. However, Nextel lacks the permeability of other media so it may not be the most suitable for some drippers while still functioning exceedingly well. For others like the Immortalizer, it may be prove to enhance its already admirable vapor and flavor quality.

Good luck.

I didn't see your method for getting the wick RxW into pre wrapped micor coil...
if I use a 1/16 bit (and the pin vise thingie) for the coil what diameter nextel? ... I ordered some 2mm and 3mm

Cut your RxW wick at a sharp angle at one end, dip it in juice to moisten then SCREW it into the coil like screw thru a nut. Once it gets started into the coil it will fit perfectly!

I use a 7/64 ID for the 3mm wick.

I've had much luck with wrapping coils on a Q-Tip shaft. I cut one of the cotton ends of the Q-Tip off completely and then wrap on the shaft. I really like a 28gauge parallel coil on the Q-Tip shaft (3 wraps gives me .6ohms) and then install 3mm ReadyXWick. Awesome setup for me.

I used to use XC when I could find it, but i guess didn't realize that it needs to be in the micro coil (or other coil) properly to get that wicking good.
Up to now I have different wick mediums for different types of atomizers.
The drippers that have wicks with close access to juice source seem to do well with cotton or slower wicking but good flavor mediums.
The further away from the juice source require wick material that wicks better/faster i.e. cellucotton rayon or pima cotton sliver (even japanese cotton pads).

Reo b/f atomizers for the most part you're looking for flavor imo over wicking because the juice is always right there at the coil...
I'll be testing the RxW with different types... (didn't read the whole thread yet).

my 2.5 cents

Thanks for that pick-up rudy. I wick into #50 wire guage or lower down to 1/16" simply cutting it at a bias. You may get a bit of splaying (far less than Jeremy saw in his video) these fold back on themselves and slide on through. A small flat-head, about the width of the coil, is handy to have for the occasional reluctant straggler splay that threatens to de-thread the weave. Tuck that smartly under the first turn and it too will rotate right on through.

But hey if it works for ya, s'all good. Me, my sticky fingers would ruin a good foot of the stuff.

The rare occasion I've seen trouble rudy is when Nextel starts to absorb ambient moisture. Enough of it and you can lose several inches of wick. Water is persistent in Nextel until it's broken in. If you try to dry burn or torch it out it results in a loosening of the weave. And that is what's going on when all these folks report splaying with treated Nextel. Best to keep it airtight in a baggy or better still glass in the original packaging until use.

Amazingly, once some vg or pg have coursed through the spaces in between those tight fibers Nextel shines and washes reliably in water with no subsequent ill effects. So well in fact that I find the benefits of torching increasingly dubious. There still remains the risk of super drying Nextel with torching in the hotter zones of a torch. And then you may very well experience splaying. It's rare though after the wick's well broken in. I know, I've used sections up to several months (one 5) in different devices.

It truly is a miracle fiber and wonderful to work with.

Good luck ukeman.

I use RW in most of my attys, especially the extra small chambered ones. I like the extra protection of the RW not burning up like CC or Cttn.
So far in the Odin I am using CC for its fast wicking abilities but will try 3mm RW next time I change the coils.

I've lost something in the 92 pages of translation but is readyxwick the same as nextel?

No you haven't, it's a fair question. Nextel is 3M's trade name for this impressive micro fiber weave which was used as fly-by-wire insulation on the space shuttle. It's time we move vaping out of the dark ages and reap the potential of space age materials.

It's also high time that 3M realized how significantly important this product could be to a large number of Americans. That they make the product easier to acquire and prepare. When are they going to realize the PR value of having the 3M label on one more product like Scotch tape sitting on everyone's bathroom shelf or kitchen counter. When did America lose its imagination?

There is a silica variant of this weave, the XS series with very similar qualities. It doesn't flow quite as well as XC but a good product. Kidney Puncher has featured it. I gather a lot of people are trying to get it direct as they've not upped their stock. That's a shame. As long as prices are reasonable it is appropriate for B&M's to offer such products in limited quantities. Some of us want to try the product or may not have occasion to need as much.

We're smart to keep our options open twf.

Good luck.

:)

My favorite drippers are Prometey2 and Achilles from Ti modders group Ukraine... with single coil, under coil elevated air post which gets its air from the side of the base. I like the flavor best and enough vapor..
Because the air post is elevated about 4mm from the base it means the wick goes down 4-5mm to the base and has to wick well especially if you are using mid range sub ohms. .5 (up to 1 ohms)
Using Pima Sliver or CC as far as I know fastest wickers

Same here. I am using a double 2mm RxW in a 2.25 mm micro coil 8 turn 28 gauge. 1.2-1.4 Ohm. The Titaniums have the shorter ends sitting in the well and the longer ends up in the filler. Flavor is off the chart.

However, believe it or not the REOmizer RM2 is pretty darn close to those two.

Cheers.

Thanks for your remarks on my blog uke…

thanks for the tips... i ordered this for making better micro coils; been hand winding for a couple years now.
When you say "insert your wire and bit in the chuck" what bit do you mean?
I know nothing about tools and such.
Ukeman

I mostly live on the Protank Micro thread which features winds directly adaptable to the REO. A post on Dremel drill bits there to answer your question. They're redic cheap and useful for DIY modding…and a few other helpful links.

Dremels and bits…oh boy!

yep.. I'm actually using silca loops for the P2 for some up to filler, and some to base for double access.
The Achilles I use the CC and Pima slivers one tail each down to drip wells.

but will try the RxW as soon as can.
