I could really see this method beneficial for the 3mm RxW, but not sold it would work w/ 2mm and a 1/16" tensioned micro coil... The only problem I could see happening is the weave could get pulled apart and that would interfere with it wicking properly. In my 3/32" tensioned coils, the 3mm is as tight fitting as the 2mm is in the 1/16" tensioned micro's. I can't pull on either one without distorting the weave after it's installed. To move the wick, it has to be in the screw motion or it gets jacked up. Will have to try it to see.
In my long term study of
every kind of wick it became unavoidable to have to thread more than a few of them in small coils (without totally shredding delicate micro and open winds). Think I tried just about every method that had ever been conceived but few things worked convincingly or reliably. Finally came up with something that pleased more than a few folks and I posted here...
Re: How to thread ANYTHING! More power to ya. I euphemistically called it cellophane but it's ordinary sandwich wrap.
The secret to wicking is twofold. First find a coil that fits the geometry and power requirements of the device. Select enough wick for it. That means just enough to ensure adequate deflection (squeeze). Secondly, remember that any and every wick media can be compressed slightly without damaging it simply by rolling it lightly between the fingers. Some wicking close to half its normal diameter. Nextel is beautiful in that sense because it's hollow and flexible but still retains enough rigidity to thread if you compress the fibers.
In any case plastic wrap makes the wick relatively slippery in a coil that's not too tight and is easy to remove. A miniature box cutter razor (dollar store variety) is handy for removing it. Cut the wrap away from one end of the coil, hold the wick and pull it out from the other. If it's too tight to remove, the coil may be perhaps too tight for the wick (or too much wick for that wind).
Good luck all.
