Again - posting this fabulous idea from dwcraig1 from another thread! This may help those of us challenged to get that darn RxW through the coils :)

Not nearly as elaborate, aka overkill... but what I've done since day one using RxW. I use a small wedge of blue painters tape that only grabs maybe 1/4" of the RxW, mostly to help old eyes guide it, and it comes right off with a slight tug after threaded in with no loss of any RxW in the process. ;-)

Pro tip, right there. I was wondering what I was going to do with the 4 partially used rolls I've accumulated.

The only tape that has had more uses than blue painters tape in my life is duct tape. It doesn't damage what it is applied to, is very easy to remove and leaves behind no glue/residue to clean up. Add a roll of duct tape and a hammer, and a guy can fix most anything. ;)

I do a lot of odd jobs and painting is one of them. Can't tell you how many times I've masked off a wall to do the baseboards, went to remove the tape and the paint on the wall came with it... A few months back I ordered a Nuppin' sleeve from Dready and masked it off to do a quick touch up with a scotchbrite pad on my grand, (didn't want to just remove the atty), and it took the patina off when I removed it. It was barely on there. I am just putting this out there, because it will do damage to things you never think it will....

I could really see this method beneficial for the 3mm RxW, but not sold it would work w/ 2mm and a 1/16" tensioned micro coil... The only problem I could see happening is the weave could get pulled apart and that would interfere with it wicking properly. In my 3/32" tensioned coils, the 3mm is as tight fitting as the 2mm is in the 1/16" tensioned micro's. I can't pull on either one without distorting the weave after it's installed. To move the wick, it has to be in the screw motion or it gets jacked up. Will have to try it to see.

In my long term study of every kind of wick it became unavoidable to have to thread more than a few of them in small coils (without totally shredding delicate micro and open winds). Think I tried just about every method that had ever been conceived but few things worked convincingly or reliably. Finally came up with something that pleased more than a few folks and I posted here...Re: How to thread ANYTHING! More power to ya. I euphemistically called it cellophane but it's ordinary sandwich wrap.

The secret to wicking is twofold. First find a coil that fits the geometry and power requirements of the device. Select enough wick for it. That means just enough to ensure adequate deflection (squeeze). Secondly, remember that any and every wick media can be compressed slightly without damaging it simply by rolling it lightly between the fingers. Some wicking close to half its normal diameter. Nextel is beautiful in that sense because it's hollow and flexible but still retains enough rigidity to thread if you compress the fibers.

In any case plastic wrap makes the wick relatively slippery in a coil that's not too tight and is easy to remove. A miniature box cutter razor (dollar store variety) is handy for removing it. Cut the wrap away from one end of the coil, hold the wick and pull it out from the other. If it's too tight to remove, the coil may be perhaps too tight for the wick (or too much wick for that wind).

Good luck all.

:)

Ok, I have 3ft of 3mm readyxwick on the way with 2 new RM2 for my wife and I's new REOs. From what I gather I need to cut the end of the wick at a 45 and thread it into a 3/32 coil, then cut the wick to size after threading, and reopen the coil with a paperclip sized rod. Sound about right? Also what do you guys use to cut the wick with?

I have never coiled the RM2 as my first REO has a cyclone. I plan on building coils and wicking with KGD to test my builds prior to RXW.

The tape is a top notch suggestion - worked well for me, not having the most dexterous or steady hands on the planet.

Question; how would you go about cleaning a ReadyXWick nickel build for temperature control, given you shouldn't glow your Ni200 wire? I would think running water and a toothbrush, but any other suggestions?
