As a matter of fact, I'm out the door right now to get a pin vise.

FB, what kind of juice do you run to get that kind of performance??

-----
Edit: Well, I was out the door... until I decided to call Ace Hardware about the Pin Vise.
"Sir, we carry the product on our website, but don't have in the store". I just hung up. :grr:

I was at Sears today and looked for one, no luck. Bummer, I really want to try one.

I'm looking for pin vises on line but have a question. I'll be using a pin vise for 3mm RxW coils, will most pin vises hold a 7/64 bit? Forgive my ignorance but I have no clue and am learning.
You're ok Penny. I'm still learning myself. The link above goes up to 3mm. And below, is the video in which Mac is using it - to show how tension Microcoils are made.

Edit: Penny, that's a good chart above, but it only goes to 3/32. This chart goes farther.

For my piece of 3mm rxw it's 3/32 all the way. I could see daylight between the wick and coil once installed in a 7/64 coil; vaped terrible too. 2.5mm may work as well as it has for others like muzichead.

I think rxw may vary in size slightly after kilning and testing for fit may be necessary for peaking its performance potential.

You just completed my night ed, I knew Mac had a vid but didn't know how to find it. I was going to ask! Thanks!

Well I hadn't planned on posting it but no worries ed. It was more of a concept wind to show the specific point of localizing this particular pin vise type on the spool edge. See the real instrument at work here isn't the pin vise especially as the spool. And it's the pulling or holding action of the left forearm that does most of the work keeping the line taught when you rotate.

The spool edge allows you to use the step on the collet of pin vise as a pivot point so you can use it as a fulcrum in 360 degrees. Or in four dimensions…up/down and left right. This lets you control both tension slightly, more or less, as well as the attack angle or bias angle to the bit. And you kind of do this intuitively as you watch the wire go on. If you start learning by applying a little tension and slowly increasing as you go then the effect of angle of pressure starts to become more apparent with each further wind you do. Pretty soon I've seen people become masters far more adept at it than me. And as can be expected you gals have the definitive edge on motor control and can easily put us to shame.

I'm a bit camera shy because I do have fine muscle contra issues and spasm. So it's hard for me to sit in a continuous session and not exhibit it. I do better some days and try to wind as much as possible.

There you have it. The spools the thing. Your real ally getting mother nature to multiply tremendous forces in flattening and stretching that wire. Find the point, the balance between the two beyond adhesion and you will never let go of the thing. Because you will know you are going to be able to reproduce that perfect vape when you need it. And that's what we're all looking for.

Have at it and good luck!

Happy Holidays all.

I'll try a build with 3/32 and check it out. The way I've been building my coils with the 7/64 leaves just enough space to screw the 3mm in and it fits tight but not choked kind of tight. The only day light I can see through it is down the center of the RxW. I build my coils vertically and that allows me to put a lot of tension on the bit and get the kanthal stretched out nice and tight.

You gotta make the rubber meet the road to have traction!

Thanks for all the acknowledgement ed. Perciate it.

As for writing, sharing…I have a simple rule of thumb — Mean what you say. Say what you do.

Happy Holidays all.

I'm using a #38 drill blank for 3mm RxW and a #52 for 2mm. Mac posted this link a while back for drill blanks, good prices and 10% discount until the end of December.

You're still digging the pin vice, FB? Thinking about it myself.
Yeah I am, enough so that I just ordered some #52 and #36 blanks to see how RxW like those sizes. Also since I got pin vice the Gizmo just holds the coil spool and I use the pin vice to make all my coils.

Yeah, I saw the pics of your setup in the other thread - it's what got me thinking. I like the gizmo just fine, but the vice feels like it's more versatile in terms of coil ID. That, and I just like experimenting.

I feel I have more control over the coil with the pin vice and it's also handy for mounting the coil. SxD was using the Starrett pin vice in his video. I've got other Starrett tools and they are good precision quality tools, so I've got one ordered. The cheep pin vice I have now only has three jaws and with small pins the 4 jaws of the Starrett will be better. They make several size ranges, this one seems to have a good range for our use without needing to change collets.
