So I really enjoy the Aspire ET-S BDC tanks and finally decided to attempt to rebuild the coils after watching a few instructional videos. Seemed pretty simple and straightforward. Picked up some 30 gauge kanthal and organic cotton. I decided to go with a single coil instead of a double coil. Ended up wrapping a nice 1.9 ohm single coil with the 30 gauge kanthal and cotton. Well I saturated the cotton and got the coil put back together. Primed it from the top again then let it sit for a few minutes. Went to take a drag and got the worst burnt taste. I can't figure out what is giving me the burnt taste. I thought I had primed the coil well before attempting a burn...I even did some dry draws. Does anyone have any idea what I may be doing wrong that is resulting in the disgusting burnt taste?

I am using the same coils and rebuilding them as well for my Anyvape Davide tanks using 2mm silica wick and 32g kanthal. If you have tried to dry burn these coils it is likely that the burnt taste is coming from the insulator on the bottom of the coil. I also agree with mvroman about ensuring that the liquid feed holes are lined up correctly. Also, if you kept the cotton lining on the inside of the cap, then reinstalled the cap with it inside, it could be that you have bunched it up right over the holes.

To be honest, I have rebuilt several of these over the last few days because I can go through a brand new one in a week. But I have yet to rebuild one that performs as well as a stock coil. If I finally get one to perform, it is usually a much dryer hit, with very little flavor. I have also tried both torching the finished coil/wick before I install it, and not torching them...either way is about the same IMO. The only thing I can think of in my situation that I have yet to try is not having compressed coils (wraps not touching).

However, I have yet to do just a single coil either. So please post if you eventually get one of these things rebuilt successfully.

So I have just tried rebuilding the coils on these (4 times). Everytime I get done and go to check that it's firing I'm getting a short. I have watched riptrippers video multiple times and spent about 1.5 hrs...yeah, yeah, I know the pack of replacements is only $12-15, work with me here! Any ideas what the problem might be? I've tried 5 wraps of 32g kanthal w/ 2mm silica (i also tried 7 wraps--probably doesn't matter too much since both times the coils were pretty tight and fit inside the head). This is my first rebuild and these buggers are tiny for my fat hands! I imagine that somewhere the wires are twisted prior to plugging and I am being careful that the leads aren't touching each other...damn i'm frustrated!

Ive been getting mixed results building single coils as well. Last night I built one, 30ga, cotton yarn, 1.8ohm, it has the best flavor ive ever gotten from a Aspire BDC head but absolutely no throat hit. None. I was vaping the same juice in a stock coil right before I changed them and was getting very good throat hit. Weirdest thing, but Im loving the flavor! Ive built plenty of others that taste like dry rocks, or register at 0ohms. I also want to experiment with whether or not the paper-like material on the inside is necessary or not.

Man, I can't even get it to fire...I'm doing something wrong, I just can't figure out what it is. So you're only building a single coil? I was trying to stack the 2 coils on top of each other like riptrippers...

After several attempts at rebuilding these coils per the videos, I have finally worked out a good rebuild.

Supplies
-32g A-1 Kanthal (one 8" piece will provide enough to do 2 micro coils)
-2mm silica wick
-1/16" drill bit

Steps
***The most important thing you do once the coil is apart is mark the bottom lip of the base where the cutouts line up. This helps when reinstalling the cap for proper positioning. I use snips to chip out a tiny piece for a permanent mark.

1. I do 8 tight wraps on each, torch, then pinch together while hot and let cool.
2. The bottom coil legs should be straight, while the top coil the legs should be slightly out to help prevent touching.
3. Threading the wick through the coil is a bugger, but it can be done with twisting, and twisting, and more twisting.
4. I cut each wick once threaded in the coil about 3/4"
5. Try to install these so that the top coil legs do not touch the sides of the bottom coil.
6. Once they are installed with rubber grommet and pin I cut the wick off barely sticking out of the metal housing.
7. Take a needle and fluff out, or spread out the wick ends.
8. Wrap the cotton sleeve around the base.
9. Reinstall the cap, making sure not to bunch up the cotton sleeve

Making a dual coil rebuild of these should give around 1.5ohms, and will cost a fraction of a replacement coil. The stock 2.1 ohm coils I have to run around 5.0v, but these I am only running at 3.5 and getting the same strength hit with better flavor.

Note
Problems I have noticed is sometimes the coil will ohm-out, meaning the coils are touching somewhere on the inside, and I will get an ohm reading on my mod...if it is working I get the voltage reading. When I run into this problem I usually twist the bottom metal plug about 1/4 turn, or try to pull one of the leg contacts over a bit more. However, sometimes I will usually have to rebuild the coils again. You may not run into this problem if you can salvage the tiny insulator pieces on the top coil legs, but most of mine were burnt from dry burning like people suggested.

Note2
I do not pre-juice my coils. Once put together before I install the cap, I put the coil in a base and install on my VV mod. I hit the button just long enough to see if I get an ohm or volt reading...volt means good, ohm means adjust or rebuild. Once I put the cap on I do the same process again, checking for ohm or volt.

Note3
DO NOT DRY BURN...PERIOD! These things have a small rubber grommet insulator on the bottom, and the top coil has plastic coverings over the legs. If you dry burn these trying to clean, you will ruin the coil and have to rebuild. I have yet to have one that I dry burn lose the burnt taste until I rebuild it.

Note4
Yes, I need this many additional notes :p. If you have any success rebuilding the Aspire BDC's that is different from the videos, please send me a pm with your steps. I will likely end up making a picture tutorial on how I get this to work.

If you look through my blogs you will find one for single coil rebuilds. I have had hit and miss success. I'm next going to try a flavor wick in the bottom slot and coil in top slot. Too little cotton or wick and it leaks, too much and dry draw. I am also going to try a vertical coil.

One thing I did not post in my previous comment was dual silica/cotton builds. I have made several using silica, and cotton in between the coils to keep them from touching and ohming out. Out of 4 I got 2 of them to work. The ones that did work had a very hard draw to them, and the other 2 tasted like cotton for a whole tank. I threw out that idea and just rebuilt them using what I posted.

Let me know how the vertical build goes. I was going to try one but could not wrap my head around how it was supposed to work.

I got the idea from this thread

http://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/fo...-micro-coil-build-aro-evod-protank-heads.html

I have some Kumiho clearos with the same type of coils and liked the idea. Then wondered about the Aspires. I even pondered placing the ground leg outside the tube, held by the cap, and only the hot leg from the bottom down and out.

I have several coils that need to be rebuilt so I decided to try the vertical build on these Aspire BDC's. The first one would not fire at all, so I took it apart and completely rebuilt it again. The second one would fire, but after several minutes began to get too much juice inside, saturating everything too much. Also, building like the guide with an 18g blunt-tipped needle with 14/13 wraps, using 32g kanthal I got 3.9v. My next attempt I am going to put in a bit more cotton on the top, and do a few less wraps to get a lower voltage, but the top leg adds a lot to the amount of wire used too.

I saw a video on Youtube, and the guy was using #500 steel mesh, cutting out a piece the same size as the cotton/paper like material and using that as a juice draw-er....I ordered some from Lightning Vapes and gonna give it a try. My goal is to get something "repeatable" with the BDC heads using a single coil, 30 gauge, clocking in around 1.8oms. Then I will be happy!!!!

I have been replacing the cotton sleeve with this stuff Amazon.com: CURITY Plain Packing Strip - 1/4 x 5 Yds - Plain - Bottle - Each: Health & Personal Care and so far it is allowing much more liquid to get through without flooding the coils.

I have been wondering, I have a couple Kangertech AeroTanks with bottom dual coils. There is no cotton or mesh sleeve between the juice and the wick that goes in the coils...the wick sticks out into the juice. I am going to try to build a single coil with a wick that goes through the two side holes and see if that works just as well without flooding.
