Captain, i wanted some advice if is good use shellac on the
mod, i would like more wet and shiny, it's a bad idea?
thank's
If you want it wet and shiny, do not drop in a bucket of water!
Seriously, what you could do is put masking tape around the button and catch cup, then use a fine 220 grit sandpaper to remove the layer of wax and urethane finish down to the bare wood. Make sure there are no shiny spots left in the wood or your finish may not 'stick'.
Then you could use a Varnish, such as tung oil (which is actually just varnish) to give it a glossy finish. Let it dry for perhaps 24-48 hours and do it again until it has the gloss that you want.
A warning about gloss finishes though, like I have said before, the wearing of fingers on the
mod will wear through any gloss finish eventually and leave your mod looking like a car that is starting to lose its clear coat, all patchy and blotchy.
Also, to do a good job with the varnish, I would apply 3-5 coats and plan on it taking a week to a week and a half to do it right.
There are other finishes available, once you sand down to bare wood you can use any type of finish you feel most comfortable using.
Most gloss coats I see are probably only one or two coats and will wear away pretty fast, heck even a shiny chrome button will show the copper underneath after only a few months of use.
Yo ho!
