Arrrr, time to knock off for the day.

I've had more requests than usual for desk caddies of different sorts lately, so I am going to try to greatly increase the variation of desk caddies up on the website, not only for box mods but for tube mods as well.

Although there are some desk caddy makers out there the numbers provided by them are pretty small. Wooden box mod users may only be a small percentage of vapers, but one thing all vapers have in common is a need for storage systems.

Ahh! The post office lied! I feel so betrayed :(

Just the paper and a bill. Oh well, tomorrow should see her safely home! :)

Morning Waho. The ultimate betrayal! One of the worst letdowns of the modern age. Expecting an eagerly anticipated package, watching tracking, then it not being there. We can all relate.
One time I was waiting for a leather jacket to come via fed ex. I had paid extra for saturday delivery. It was still winter and I really wanted to ride my new bike. I had to run out for an emergency so I left a door tag I had gotten from another fed ex driver. I wrote my tracking number on it and signed it. When I came back an hour later fed ex had been there, but instead of leaving the package they put another door tag right next to the one I left, saying they would retry delivery on Monday! Well, I was a little ...... so I concocted a little story and started phoning numbers. Finally got to local dispatch and told them I needed the jacket for a charity ride (I actually did, but it was not for two weeks) and they finally agreed to have their driver meet me with the jacket. Long story but that day I rode and I rode triumphant over the delivery powers that be! LOL!

Wow! What an absolutely beautiful trio of mods. Great choices. That tank looks great on the snakewood too!
Sherrie, what are the woods on the other two?

The one on the left is Cocobolo with Bloodwood end caps and the one on the right is Redheart with Gabon Ebony end caps :) Yes, the Lava tank does match her pretty well, cept' for the violet color in it (which doesn't show up too much, more so in outdoor lighting)

Edited to add: forgot my manners....Thank you :D

Well....we're SUPPOSED to be dropping into the mid to upper 80's here for the rest of THIS week...if that actually happens that is....you know how well the weather forecasters are :grr: Even the 80's would be welcomed after weeks of upper 90's and into the 100's :)

I KNOW all too well what you're going through Waho....I worked in a factory for 24 years and they poured metal in one of the departments. I finally threw in the towel when they wanted to put me there, on bench inspection (a position that newbies were always placed!!)

It's actually warming up again here :(

Not that it matters, it's always hot in the shop!

I rotate between the pouring area and core making area. The one week I'll run a cold box (250 degrees, go figure) core machine shuffling parts around. The next it's 30 minutes off, 30 on in the after pour. 500 degree tooling chipping metal off. We have such short work times there since even under the big blower it's 180 degrees ambient temperature. Core room is only 120 under the blowers :p

Always good to hear another soul who understands. Especially when my lady complains it's like 78 in the house and it's soooooo miserable :D

Good afternoon everyone.

I'm afraid I have a pretty big problem here at RSM. I've refunded the couple of Pre-orders I have and have put mod making on hold until I can figure out how to solve it.

Here is the problem. Every month I make a batch of mods, I work 80 hour weeks on average. Half of everything I make goes back into overhead, parts and supplies or something and I don't think of as income.

What I have left to pay the rent is what I consider profit.

Last year in August I was making about $1600 per month in profit, $1400 went to rent and bills. Average $5 per hour worked times 80 hours.

Then I dropped the old style of wider mods and started making the next generation of taller mods, more work but a more refined mod that was very well received. I kept the price the same. Profit dropped from $1600 to $1400 per month, $4.37 per hour.

A few months ago the summer slump hit, there were more cheap but good tube mods available and interest in RSM's was dropping, so I came up with the next upgraded design trying to keep from going under.

Very well received I must say, even I love the new look but there is the problem.

I again released a mod that takes me longer to make with high detail and didn't really raise the price.

Profit dropped to $1200 per month for 80 to 100 work weeks, $3.75 per hour.

Oops .... looks like I've painted myself into a corner here, I'm sure the other wood mod makers will laugh at my ignorance. I've never claimed to be a good businessman though, I don't have the heart for it.

I've gone from averaging 30 mods per month to 16 to 18 mods per month.

If I double the price of each mod to $350, I could work 40 hours per week at $3.75 per hour.

If I double the price I could work 80 hours for $7.50 per hour.

From every indication I've picked up, I really don't think I can ask much more for my mods. People just don't have that much money to spend, so yup, I have a problem.

I have no real advisers or consultants, perhaps if I have some thoughts and ideas thrown at me from other sources I can see a course to set.

The profit from desk caddies and the little Cruiser II's is much better as they take much less time to complete.

Once you give something you can't take it back. Perhaps I could make less of the Cutlass/Destroyer II's, charge a bit more and try to increase sales of Desk Caddies and the little Cruisers II?

It may seem strange to bring all this up, but in reality I have two sons without any practical experience or useful advice and I live in a area that is new and I have no friends or associates that I could take advice from. All BS aside, I would rather humble myself a bit in public than simply shut down.

That is very sad to hear Cappy... I mean it.

I'm not a long time RSM fan like other people in here who've been following you since day 1. I just discovered your Pvs a short time ago. But one thing's for sure, you make one of the best PV out there, honestly.
I'm no businessman either, but you need to figure out how to make a living for yourself, that's for sure. Now, if that means raising the price of the Cutlass and Destroyers to a price that could bring enough money, I'm sure people who look for a unique vaping experience will follow. Selling more Cruisers and caddies may help as well, and you can count on the RSM community to help spread the word.

Time for some RSM love here!

Cappy - I feel for you and I'm so sorry you're in this position. I am not business minded so don't have any useful advice for you - I hope somebody with a head for business will chime in. I certainly think your mods are worth double what you charge but I know I couldn't pay that and I'm sure many are in the same boat as me. On the other hand, if I could afford it, I would pay that so perhaps there is a market for the higher priced, higher end wood mods? What if you simplified and made monthly batches of the Cruiser II and the caddies and took special orders for the Destroyer II and Cutlass II - at a higher price? Or made a handful of them a month? One thing I've noticed here on ECF is that people are willing to pay more for something of high quality that is difficult to get or has a longer waiting time...
