As Tim said usually when the spring collapses it is the fault of the atty or cartos. A multimeter would let you check the atty you take off and let you see the reading.
Make sure the atty or cartos you were using when it happened is tossed!

First thing you should do if you get any sparking is remove the atty or cartos that is on.

Sometimes just tightening the atty or cartos while putting it on can cause a short. Always make sure they are held straight when making contact with the connector.

Always check the bottom of the atty or cartos. The center ring should not protrude out.
