His well-documented taste for the trappings of monarchy may have had a little something to do with it as well.

Part of it, but the Sedition acts were the prime mover there. Ran right into the face of freedom of speech and press and the people really didn't like that much. Still it was a close election - the last 'close election' though, since the Republicans dominated the '2nd Revolution' for 24 years of Jefferson, Madison and Monroe - all two termers.

The really hilarious part is that it bans vaping at the beach. It was hilarious in the first place when the coastal cities banned smoking at the beach (though in that case, I can see some justification based on the litter issue), since you can be standing right next to someone smoking at the beach and not even know it. Hell, even lighting a cigarette at the beach can sometimes be an insurmountable task. In the 15 or so years since the beach-smoking bans were first enacted, I've never witnessed any attempt to enforce them. People smoke at the beach just as openly as they always did. The beach-vaping ban won't be any different.

Chicago passed smoking bans at playgrounds and beaches when Illinois went clean air. Now they just passed all parks/harbors smoke and vape free. They said their concern isn't really to enforce, but just awarenesses. If you refuse to put it out our stop when told so by an officer, that's when you get a ticket.

The police superintendent even said there hasn't been a single ticket ever written for these bans.

Yeah, the campaign narrative of "Jefferson is a slave-impregnating atheist" didn't work quite as well in 1800 as it did in 1796.

Sounds about right. How far up the coast is the ban in San Diego? Just the city or up towards Orange County??

That depends on what you mean by "San Diego" because it is a large and diverse area.

As a person living in northern San Diego County, I consider myself a San Diegan.
Even though I currently live in "Vista" which is not in San Diego proper.

I think most of us really consider ourselves San Diegans, even if we are not living in San Diego proper.
I grew up in San Diego proper, but have lived all over this county.

This particular ban extends to San Diego proper, but there have been many bans that have passed in other areas of "San Diego" over the last year.

--Vista
--Oceanside
--La Mesa
--Carlsbad
--Solana Beach

I imagine I'm missing a few, and many others are currently considering such bans.

Like DC said, this particular ban is only San Diego proper, which means only as far north (on the coast at least) as La Jolla. But most of the other coastal cities have previously enacted bans; the only ones that haven't, to my knowledge, are Encinitas and Leucadia, but I read a while back that the Encinitas council was considering an ordinance, so that may have changed.

Which brings up an interesting question...

It does appear that the "bans' are mostly happening in the coastal communities so far.
Will that extend further east at some point?

Those of us that live here know that the eastern portion of San Diego County is a bit different.
Will they accept this kind of garbage being passed in their backyards?

Why are the coastal areas being targeted first?
It is because those areas have a different mindset?

San Diego used to be a place where Nanny-State policies were rejected.
But over the last few years I've seen it changing slowly but surely.

It should be interesting to see if our eastern communities hold out longer than Orange County does.

I knew some people a bit north and east - from Barstow - who would use what they have buried in the backyards to resist any ban

I don't think an outsider can fully appreciate how stark the differences are (both geographical and cultural/political) between coastal San Diego County and East County. On the coast, things are much more liberal/progressive; a lot of the local officeholders and community leaders are graying ex-hippies, so theirs is usually the prevailing ideology. But when you start getting into the mountain/desert areas, things get really conservative in a big damn hurry. These are the people who've been electing two generations of Duncan Hunters to Congress for the past 35 years (either of whom would probably be pelted with eggs if they tried to walk down the street in Encinitas). So to answer your question, no, I don't think it's likely we'll see any vaping bans more than 15 miles inland any time soon. The cities in our area are probably a crap shoot; they could go either way depending on who the mayor/council members happen to be at any given time.

Edit: the one caveat I would add to the coastal/liberal thing would be northern Oceanside near Camp Pendleton, for obvious reasons.
