The unprotected batteries are a perfect fit. I don't know if that's Trog's reason for using them instead of the protected ones, or not.
However, Trog is adamant that they are safe to use by anyone with common sense. The charger protects them against overcharging, and they become drained beyond function before they are drained to a dangerous point.
He wouldn't want his customers blown up, of course.
They are what he uses himself, and he designed the SD for his own needs.
People have replaced the unprotected with the protected, with good results.
I use the batteries provided in the kit, if you're wondering.
To add on to what geeker said, you will also notice maybe after 4 hours (assuming you're heavily vaping it) or so that the battery may not be so strong. You will end up swapping it out eventualy before the battery is fully drained. It's easy to tell because the atomizer will take longer to glow if you pull the cart out to look at it and compare it to how it looks when you have a fully charged battery. I don't think it's possible to really vape it til the battery is completely discharged anyway (well it could be but you would have no reason to).
