I don't quench in water... I use PG and it works like a charm.

That is a great idea. I still use water and I almost never get shorts on the wick unless I was lazy and left a frayed edge on the outside of the wick. I'm going to try that on my next one to see how it goes though :)

I need a BFG! What's the ETA? Just trying to keep the thread going. Anyone know anything?

Long answer: Scuba G-tank-US is a work in progress currently. After that gets wrapped up, Dan should take a break if he's feeling burned out and then hopefully a BFG atty co-op will develop.

Short answer: Not anytime soon. (and that's okay)

Here is a drawing I made of a design for a BFG but I never got around to trying it. Maybe someone can use it?

Sorry for the LONG post. I wanted to be thorough.

Hi everyone.... Iam relatively new to these rebuild atty's. I have V3. having trouble.... I was at work and the V3 was doing funny things...like progressivly drawing more volts... Weird I know.. So I pulled the wick inserted pin wrapped new coil. slid it up connectedit and it fired... then I stent about 5 minutes dripping on it makeing sure it was REALLY wet and fireing and blowing....mind you I have a full tank... I was running 5 wraps at 3.7v it responded well. I was UNABLE to temper wick with lighter. the wire started getting red at one post but not the other (distance between the wick and post the same) after 2-3 drags the wire broke.... . I repeated the above process a second time only this time after connecting wire to the posts I pushed the wick toward the post slightly to remove tension. again 2-3 drags later the wire at one post got red hot and snapped. Now I'm ...... .....drained tank blotted wick sucked on it and blotted again to try and get it dry. wrapped it again. dropped voltage to 3.0v reconnected to posts(approx 1/6th inch of wire spanning from post to wick) now I am firing and blowing like crazy trying to dry it out to get a good completely red coil, no luck... only part of the firest wrap on either side would glow... so I figured what the H_ll so I stared to the soak fire soak fire....did this repeatedly....OVER AND OVER... finally after like 15-20 minutes I refilled the tank and started vaping after 3-4 drags (SNAP). Each time I made sure their was NO wire crossing and wick was not touching the center tube. The only thing that I was unable to do at work was burn the coil with a torch or lighter....

I'd take a multi meter to the posts to check for a short. Also try keeping the wick as close to the post as possible. Sounds like a short or too much distance from post to wick/coil.

I did the same on my last wick and it's been the best yet. I also only oxidized the center portion of the U where it touches metal (from one side to the other). Everything in the juice is unmolested. Also 325x325 mesh solved my wicking issues. Hoping it wasn't a fluke because this is the first wick I haven't had to redo or fiddle with at all.

It's no fluke! When I started quenching with PG it all came together. I never have shorts when I wrap the coil. In my opinion, the single most important thing you can do in getting one of these things working is to properly oxidize the wick, and for me, the oxidation builds up better when quenching in PG instead of water. I have probably made more wicks than most people... I've done it many hundred times... Heck, I rolled 288 of them in one weekend! (24 Dozen, to be precise) I also store pre-rolled and oxidized wicks in a zip lock bag filled with PG (or VG for the 325x325 wicks) so when I put one in a PV, it's already soaked and ready to wick! A little prep time spent up front makes owning a mesh atty so much easier!

I tried quenching in juice on my last roll and it did work perfectly. I never had much issue quenching in water, but quenching in juice definitely makes the process faster and a better end result. The one I did recently did not need to be fiddled with till the oxidation built back up where the kanthal scored it.

Very good tip Zen, thanks :)

I read about these Genesis mods but I CANNOT seem to find anywhere to BUY ONE. I like the Zenesis, saw the website, but no place to order one. Can anyone give me a list of who is now selling these mods or kits? THANKS

AFAIK, there's Dan's co-op (full), Orion (German made, run on British forum), Genisis LV/Kronos (full but probably people who dropped out, German made), Line (Croatian mods, full I think; in production) and the Zenesis (making a list for future production).

There use to be threads on here for all but some got deleted. You can still find the Line and Zenesis thread in the modders supplier forum. The Line thread isn't for orders but discussion. There's a Genisis LV update thread in the modders forum.

this is a good idea, puttin my thinking cap on ,on this set-up. one thing though, the tube in the bottle seems it has to be a hollow stainless tube, so it can carry fluid to the mesh at the top,, going to try this out,,

Santo,
The mesh will carry the juice up to the coil easy enough.

Just like the scubaGen V3... Cool heh

I saw some 510 connectors at a site somewhere ??? that have an extra large hole in the middle. I wonder if it would be big enough to pass a SS wick through it. It would make something like this a lot easier to construct.

edit..
Ok, too early in the morning, might not be that useful...
