Hey Dan! Just wanted to say thanks real quick. I bout have my scubagen done, just waiting on Kanthal and Mesh now. I shortened mine up by ALOT. Note for the future, cutting SS takes FOREVER with a battery powered dremel. I will post the finished product after I get it fully assembled. It's my mini-Scuba(Mini Scube? Scubagenv3 Shorty Edition?)

In a nutshell, I cut about a 1" section of the tube that creates the tank section out, and then putting it back together. I am using a tight fitting rod through the center to keep it straight.

I only had to recharge my Dremel battery about 12 times to get the tube cut LOL. Next time I get a corded Dremel...

I hope I can get mine together today. Was having crappy luck last night. The post for the negative side don't fit in the hole, my battery connector was too small from madvapes , wire I have it too big and I also couldnt get the solder to stick to the post for the negative side. Gonna start fresh today.

I just got 3 boxes of 2.5ohm XL CE2's in from madvapes, they are a perfect fit:



A small amount of solder on the side would help make it permanent, but you will need a vice or somthing to press it in then.

Might wanna invest in a butane mini torch. For some soldering jobs where there's nothing but metal around it works great. 15 bux at the depot, big can o butane around 5 bux.

Okay it looks like I'm having trouble locating the spec for resistance rating of 32ga Kanthal. Hoping for around 3 ohms

Ok when I say a dab of solder I am talking like this:


Before the dab of solder on the side I could push it in all the way and remove it. It was tight but not like I wanted it. So after the dab I had to tap it in, and now I can not remove it. Just what I was wanting.
And ohms check was good on both the ground and power.

I was thinking for the negative post of taking a small copper battel crimp, cutting/bending it to fit in the hole so that the naol would fit in there tight and soldering it. Would be perfect if I could find one small enough to make fit seeing as copper is maleable and is a good conductor from what I hear.

Solution for CE2's that are too small to press into the Scubagen body!

Create a Solder Shim...

Coat the knurled part of the CE2 with some of the Ruby Flux.

Heat this area of the CE2 with a soldering iron and add a thin layer of lead free silver solder (4% silver) over the entire knurled part of the CE2.

File or sand if needed, I didn't have to do this part.

Press CE2 into Scubagen body.

Done!

i just spent 3 hrs on putting this together, them washers, springs and tube is a mother humpper to get. once i got the washers and spring on nail,soldered wire and tubeonto nail end , spring has copression, lookes good, tried to slide kanthal in between,,, washers slid over the spring, arg!..got to redue tomorrow..................

I gave up on the washers/springs after having the sane thung happen to me. I went with threaded rid instead abd it is doing the trick for me

Again!

I'm using a "Spring Pin" to secure the negative terminal to the Scunagen body.

I had to grind down one end of the Spring Pin at least 3/32" or 0.09375".

I pressed the side of the the spring pin that I didn't grind into the negative hole on the Scubagen.

I tinned the inside of the sping pin and then tinned the nail.

I pressed the nail into the sping pin while applying a little heat to melt the solder.

Once the solder started to melted and the nail slid into the spring pin I removed the heat and had to hold tension on the nail to ensure that the spring remained slightly compressed untill the solder hardend.

I show a piece of 32 AWG Kanthal secured to the negative post.

Please note:

The spring in this picture was compressed to tight and I had to loosen it up.

one of these would be good if you want an open flame to solder with. im not fond of it using as a soldering iron though
going to get some heat shrink tube, o rings, and something for washers today. also going to look for something to temporarily use as tube, think i read a 20ml syringe will work... im a slacker

32g kanthal is around 20.40 ohms/ft and about .4 ohms per wrap.


Good job 'ecb'. I recognize you from an earlier Genisis video. And yes, the solder shim works great. Much thanks to 'pk' for that idea. He gets a scuba award...lol

I have one of those torch kits and am just getting used to it for soldering. I'm liking it more as time goes by....

the biggest issue with it for me is the exhaust port right below the tip... i tend to forget about it and melt plastic, or my finger. and i tend to have to adjust the flame alot. not just slide adjust, adjust it with the gear and a small nail
it is a handy tool
@harmonic, ill have to try to find one today... i hate asking for syringes lol

Yes, I understand about the exhaust port. I have another torch iron so I've gotten used to keeping that port facing up at all times to avoid marring my work surface.
