Hey, we are missing out on a really clever technique for perpetuating lies. First we write the lie in one document, and then we repeat it in other documents, citing our first lying document as the source.

The TRUTH® About E-Cigarettes

“Studies have shown that when smokers use vaporized nicotine as a smoking alternative or to quit, the vaporized nicotine produces similarly addictive and psychological effects as cigarettes.8”

“This increases the appeal of E-cigarettes to youth, paving the way for them to become a ‘gateway’ to tobacco use.3”

“There is growing concern that e-cigarettes may emerge as a ‘gateway tool’ for youth to additional tobacco product usage.1”

So what does this oft-footnoted article really have to say? I tracked down a copy of the article here: http://www.ttac.org/tcn/peers/pdfs/09.21.09/WV_DTPNews2Use%202009%20E-Cigarettes.pdf
WV Division of Tobacco Prevention and Control. News 2 Use (Summer 2009) E-Cigarettes Remain Controversial…And lack the proof of any health benefits.

“Studies have shown that when smokers use vaporized nicotine for either supplemental or smoking cessation reasons, the vaporized nicotine produces similarly addictive and psychological effects as cigarettes.”

Where are these studies published? Who are the authors? Notice that there is no footnote for this statement in this, the document being cited across the country as “proof” of statements being made in health department documents. Without attribution, this statement constitutes the personal opinion of the writer.

And what proof of the “gateway” effect can be found in the WV document?

“Solutions are also available with other flavorings, such as strawberry, orange, mint, vanilla, caramel, coffee. This raise [sic] concerns that this might make e-cigs a ‘gateway tool’ for youth and additional, actual tobacco product use.”

Again, notice that there is no footnote linked to the second sentence. What proof is there that youth are purchasing and using e-cigarettes at all, much less purchasing them first and then “graduating” to “actual tobacco product use”? None whatsoever.

There are “concerns” because solutions have “attractive” flavors? Where is the concern about these statements from GlaxoSmithKline in a mailer just received from CVS pharmacy?
“Like spearmint candy? You’ll love Nicorette® Mint mini Lozenges.”
“Like fruit smoothies? You’ll love Nicorette® Fruit Chill™Gum.”
“Like maraschino cherries? You’ll love Nicorette® Cherry Lozenges”

Elaine, "the result justifies the means" for those people. I expect more states to get on the anti-vaping bandwagon, since they are at risk of losing some tobacco revenue.

Couldn't have said it better myself. That is, unless you had deleted the words "at risk of".

Remember, Money speaks louder than Truth when it comes to politics. Money can buy you expensive TV ad time so you can smear the opponent you are running against. Where as the Truth does get you many votes what so ever.

Interesting what they choose NOT to quote from that article:

Smoking bans do not include e-cigarettes because they do not burn tobacco or any other plant.

Hmmm...might that mean "no smoke?"

Research shows that most who are obtaining these e-cigarettes are smokers looking for an alternative to tobacco without the hazards and harmful side effects.

Hmmm...might that mean "these are not being used by "most" smokers as cessation devices as the FDA claimed?"

I really hate these people.
