I'm tempted by the mechs, I understand they're actually not all that much different from a VV/VW provided you stick to reasonable resistances.

My only problem is I'm kinda paranoid about shorts, what if it gets banged up just the right way, the coil moves and shorts out, what would that actually be like?

ive had it happen to me once so far. battery tube started to get really hot. i unscrewed the mech and took out the battery right away. kind of scary

It happened to me too when I was a noob....I had a kayfun on my smok Magneto. I did not cut the leads underneath the screws close enough, so it shorted out against the inside of the chimney. The mod got REALLY hot REALLY quickly, so I immediately took the battery out & fixed the problem....it was scary though!!!

It happened to me with a Sigelei #20 and a .8ohm coil. The spring inside the mech got so hot it split and fused itself to the button. The mech started getting extremely hot so I unscrewed the bottom cap as fast as I could burning a finger. It left a little blister. Scariest part was how it happened so fast without any warning. Just get a good mod, good batteries and always inspect with good eyes. That Sigelei was known for that issue with the fire button.
