Question: I have a black ZMAX V3 with a round top. Does the top cap screw off or is it pressed fitted on?

TIA
If you have a second generation V3 the top cap will screw off exposing the one-piece 510/eGo threads. If you have a first generation V3 there is no removable top cap because the metal collar around the 510/eGo threads and the 510 threads are the same piece.

For all V3s and V5 the complete 510/eGo assembly is press fitted into the battery tube.

Thanks, yzer.

How would I tell if I have a first/second generation?

It is very easy to make a visual check for first and second generation V3. Second generation V3 has a 1mm or so wide stainless steel flange visible between the top cap and the battery tube. This flange is absent on first generation. I posted a photo comparing the two several times on this thread. I will post it again here in a few hours. I'm running ECF mobile right now which is no good for posting pix.

I'll wait for your pictures. I just measured the whole top cap at 13mm.

Here is the comparison. These are flat top Sigelei Zmax V3s. The second generation V3 is shown on top. The first generation V3 is underneath. You can see the flange between the top cap and the battery tube on second generation. I think Sigelei stopped making the first generation V3 during the summer or fall of 2013. Both have fresh springs and are sized for 18500 batteries.

The removable top cap is easy to screw off and on. All V5s are made with this feature. The second generation V3 and all V5s look like this with the top cap off. What you see is the exposed one-piece stainless steel threaded 510/eGo assembly. This entire assembly is press-fitted into the battery tube on all Sigelei Zmaxs.

Did the first one have ego threads?
-The V1 was solid tube and 510 only. The V1 was quickly discontinued and followed by V2.

-First generation V2 and V3 had 510/eGo but the eGo threading was the trouble-prone press-fitted brass threading. V2 is solid tube with interchangeable battery caps allowing for 18650 and 2x18350 operation only. V3 features the telescopic tube for use with 18350, 18490, 18500, 18650 and 2x18350.

-First generation V2 and V3 get make-overs for generation two. The one-piece stainless steel threaded 510/eGo connector replaces the old unit with the brass eGo threading. Removable top caps are introduced along with new firmware and a half-round housing for the circuit boards.

-V5 is introduced at the same time as the V2 and V3 upgrades. It incorporates all of the upgrades and features of V3 and adds new features and firmware.

-Sigelei Zmax Mini is solid tube and 18350 only except for a comparatively tiny percentage of Minis that were custom assembled with extension tubes for an ECF co-op. The Mini is the same length as V3 and V5 with 18350. Mini also underwent the same first to second generation upgrades as V2 and V3.

Below you can see down into the 510/eGo connector of a first generation V3. This is the best look you are going to get because the top cap is not removable. The press-fitted brass eGo threading is visible. The 510 threading is stainless steel with a brass center pin, the same as second generation. Many APVs like Vamo, MVP and Innokin SVD are still using soft chrome-plated brass for 510 and eGo threading. Chrome-plated brass threading looks prettier than stainless steel but doesn't hold up to wear nearly as well as SS.

Yes, there are exceptions to the rule that Sigelei Zmax Mini means 18350 only but there are exceptions in many parts of the world. Sigelei Mini means 18350 only in North American open markets as far as I can tell. That rule may not apply in regions outside the USA. Buy what you can where where you can but don't assume that what you can buy is equivilent to buying anywhere else. Use common sense before buying.

Living in Portugal, buying in Spain :p

It isn't worth it for you guys buying over here. Most stuff is more expensive than over there.

Good point but why? We could buy a V5 for $47 here in the states not long ago. Now we can buy one for $47 from Singapore if we want to endure a six-week wait. Direct from China retailers are quickly underselling US vendors. But that's what the US Congress wants from both parties.

Because of a protective market. Bear in mind that I can shop across the EU as if it were in front of my house. No customs, no added taxes. I pay the country's origin tax.
If however I buy something in Asia or US, not only have I deal with lottery customs that will withhold a package for weeks but also with a good chance that I will need to pay custom duties, VAT and transport costs from customs to my address... It's just too much of a hassle...
