OK I tried the springs I have after reversing disc in the bottom cap and they all resulted in a voltage drop of 0.6 volts. This is more than the drop experienced without the spring (0.3 - 0.4). I measured it using the Vb command. Is this similar to your experience?

Are you saying you get less voltage drop without the spring in???? so no spring, just the brass cap?

Just thought I would drop by and report that I am still using both of my Semovars pretty much daily and no problems. Family of 3 ....users of Semos and ProVari's. In my book, these are both just really good mods and need no back up APV's when you have either one.......my two cents and all.

By the way...... My daughter lost a spring on one of my Semo's.....just went to the local ACE hardware....found something that fit in the hole snug.....then snipped it off to be the right length......I Guess there are no Ace hardware stores around the pyramids ?

+1. Ditto this.

I am considering the Taifun Eye, if it ever comes back in stock, though, and I consider it to better than either the Provari or Semovar. However, Provari is coming out with a new APV soon, so I will either buy all new APV's, or wait to see what Provari has in store for us. I have been a big fan of the Provari QC for a long time now. My two cents.

Thunderball...I do have springs that fit after some tinkering..but if you go to vb and press another time after it shows the current battery voltage, it will show you the voltage that will actually reach your coil. The Difference between the two values is the voltage drop. The Semo normally has a voltage drop between 0.2 and 0.4 volts. With my springs used after reversing the brass cap and fitting it in the hole, thus using the spring itself to establish direct contact with the battery, the voltage drop is 0.6. Now my question to you and Bill and the rest of us is: what is the voltage drop with the factory spring when you reverse the brass cap?

I was hesitant between the Taifun eye and waiting for the new futura. But after watching Phil Busardo's review of the Taifun Eye, I decided to wait and see what the new Provari will be like.

This vaping obsession is expensive for us gadget people. And it seems like every week something new is announced or released. I'm starting to get in to mech mods (for some reason?) and drippers, and that's a whole other can of worms. :(

I'm a little bit of an elitist, I'll admit it. I've never seen another Semovar in person anywhere.... add to that it's a top of the line awesome device --- What can I say. I will say that I wish it went above 15w, but that's mainly because of my recent obsession with mechs/drippers - I'm kind of cloud chasing right now.... so I want more power.

I'm going to test the voltage drop with my semovar and a freshly charged VTC5 with and without the spring, and reversing the brass cap and vice versa. I can't imagine why removing the spring would create LESS voltage drop, but hey strangers things have happened.

Honestly, I'm not sure buying ANY mod right now is a good idea, especially one in the upper price ranges. China is stepping up their game with the SX chips, Provari is around the corner with something up their sleeve, the Nexgen (Futura) guys have said they've got something new in the works, and it almost looks like 30w is the new 15w, if you understand what I'm saying.

Does anyone need that kind of power? Probably not, but speaking for myself, I can't afford to drop $200 - $300 on mods on a whim... So if I do decide to buy something new, I want it to be good, up to spec and reliable. And honestly, I feel like my Semovar is one of the nicest VW/VV mods I've ever seen, held or used. :)

+1. BUT.......I wouldn't mind a device like the Eye that has better performance specs than the Provari or Semovar, and if something else comes out that's better, well, may have to get one of those as well. It's not a whim Phone Guy, and these devices last about 45 minutes on EBay, and elsewhere, and I've never sold a device for less than 90% of what I paid for it.....just sayin'......BUY THEM ALL. SELL THE OLD...

I totally agree with you. It is turning into an obsession or for me a hobby. Personally I am not obsessed with bigger clouds. I just want a decent vape...moderate vapor and good flavor. I rarely go over 12 watts and for my purpose I know that the Semo and the Provari as its backup are enough for me. The point is it is getting to be a hobby and I can always sell the ones I no longer use like Bill said. The SX chip seems to be great except that the form factors it was used in don't appeal that much to me, and I don't really dig tilting my mod every once in a while. So it will be either the futura or the new provari. And who knows...maybe the futura 20's price will fall in the near future and I can grab one through the classifieds!

All these tests being done in Hybrid mode with KF3.1 with a 1.7ohm coil.
Using the menu option of the Semovar Ub first result, then pressing fire button to get voltage under load, 15w setting, all batteries fresh off the NiteCore i4 charger, so should all be at 4.2v.

Sony VTC5 2600mah results:
Spring down (away from battery) brass cap touching bottom of battery.
4.2 then 4.0

Brass cap reserved, spring towards battery bottom, brass cap screwed down tightly against the stainless battery cap.
4.2 then 4.0

Brass cap only, no spring at all. Brass cap right side up touching the bottom of battery.
4.2 then 4.0

Panasonic NCR18650B (3400mah) Green battery results:
Spring down (away from battery) brass cap touching bottom of battery.
4.2 then 3.9

Brass cap reserved, spring towards battery bottom, brass cap screwed down tightly against the stainless battery cap.
4.2 then 3.8

Brass cap only, no spring at all. Brass cap right side up touching the bottom of battery.
4.2 then 3.9

Panasonic CGR18650CH (2250mah) Grey battery results:
Spring down (away from battery) brass cap touching bottom of battery.
4.2 then 4.0

Brass cap reserved, spring towards battery bottom, brass cap screwed down tightly against the stainless battery cap.
4.2 then 3.9

Brass cap only, no spring at all. Brass cap right side up touching the bottom of battery.
4.2 then 3.9

Make of these results what you will. I did them twice, no change in the results. My semovar does have Noalax on all the threads including the brass cap, and both ends of the spring.

Phoneguy...Brilliant...Outstanding work!!!! Thank you. Seems that while the difference is marginal, the optimal setup would be with the spring down, followed by the no spring at all. The performance of the VTC 5 however does intrigue me. Not even a marginal difference between the three setups!

I always thought the reason to have the spring up, touching the bottom of the battery, with the brass part screwed in all the way, was to eliminate having to "screw to adjust" the brass part to make contact with the bottom of the battery. Plus, that way, it provides some protection for the device as a whole with the spring up...so in case of dropping it, the spring acts as a cushion.

That's what I thought, at least.
