Hi all,

I don't know what to do about it.. I mean, obviously I'm never going to use it anymore. But I don't know if or where I should report it to.

I don't want this to happen to anybody else.. Lives and property are at stake.
If I hadn't been nearby when I started hearing it, there almost assuredly would have been thermal runaway - and lives and property 100% in jeopardy! When I pulled the batteries out, I got a burn w/blister from the metal contact of the battery. Needless to say, I'm not going to use those batteries anymore either... But I don't know if I should get them out to a recycler ASAP, or just store them safely with my other cells ready for batch recycling??

So is there any course of action I might want to take about this? I couldn't care less about suing or anything.. I just don't want it happening to others if this could be a potential fault with a certain lot, perhaps.?

Hello Hoggy, you could try raising the issue with smok. But I wouldn't know how they would respond to it.

You've raised the issue here as well, so hopefully folks will take some notice. But lots of vapers like myself wouldn't use a SMOK mod if you paid us, due to bad experiences and SMOK's reputation.

And for your batteries, I think that you may be right retiring them. Best person to ask is @Mooch

The 1st thing I would do is Contact whoever you got the Mod from. Detailing Exactly what has happened.

And that you Feel that it presents a Real Danger.

I would also mention that you have been using an e-Cigarette for ___ Years. And consider yourself Knowledgeable and Experienced.

That's an older model mod, they originally came out 3 or 3-1/2 years ago..have you been using it that long?

Pretty much, yeah.. (Well, I mean at one time I used to have ~18 mods out w/attys - unlike recently, where I try keeping that to ~9 or less.)

I've been using it as a beater mod, along with my other Smok-related products (X-cube mini & Koopor Mini) - in hopes they die soon. So they may be crap mods, but they've been proving to last a rather long time. I have half a mind to just give up and store these with my vapocalypse stash (minus the X-cube II), while I'm in the process of switching to using mainly DNA 75C/250C mods (now that I can finally easily afford them  ).

I still don't know if I should throw out my Smok X-cube Mini though, since it bears direct relation with X-cube II.. I wonder if it will exhibit the same disastrous trait.

With smok I don't think you ever really know. Lots of people complain about their mods having issues from Smok. Some believe it's because of the sheer quantity they sell that some bad ones will necessarily slip through, others believe Smok has quality control issues.

I have to say I'm in the later group, that they have issues with their QC. Thing is, either way like you said, it becomes dangerous - even life threatening, if these mods pop up with serious issues.

As a result I see mods like any other modern electronic, just not made to last any appreciable amount of time. I think some companies like Smok make their products to last about a year or so and honestly, it's pretty good even if the mod lasts only 6 months from a cost effective standpoint as compared to smoking.

So if that mini has seen about two years of use that one is your call; you can always keep it and do things like remove the atty when your not physically vaping, that would cut back on any potential problems when its not in hand, or you could see that as too much of a pain and throw it out.

it's entirely up to you, but at best I'd go into hardcore safety measures with it.. Mooch has always claimed no matter the device we should do these things anyway, remove batteries at night, remove atty when not in use etc.

You just have to remember these things if you do put it into your stash..

That would be best, but with 9/10 mods out, it becomes impractical.
I also don't think removing the atty would be enough to protect against auto-fire.. I might tend to think that thermal runaway would happen regardless of atty being present.

What would be great, is if there would be some fire-resistant open box to set your mods in.. But upon further thinking, that may just end up turning into an open box of timed-release firecrackers.

An atomizer must be present to complete the electrical circuit to the battery. So removing either the battery or the atomizer would break the electrical circuit and prevent any possibility of auto fire.

A hard short can still occur with the battery if the insulator wrap has a tear or hole, so the risk of battery venting or thermal runaway could still exist.

So it wouldn't be possible, at all (without the atomizer)? Even given that we are talking about Smok here? ;)

One thing this company did right was the selection of their Brand name..

No, not even a SMOK mod.

Best option is to remove the battery. A battery needs to be in the mod for the circuit board to even turn on or to autofire.
