Still tying to track down a decent clone before I look into an authentic, I was looking over the pictures of the mod and one thing I can't figure out is the switch. It looks like the negative pin rests directly on the negative side of the battery. What is keeping it from auto firing assuming the switch is screwed all the way up? There doesn't appear to be a spacer of any kind keeping the negative side of the battery from connecting with the switch?

There is a raised lip that touches the shrink wrap on the battery and holds it in place.
Same as all Chi you's, Caravela's and Kings.
Works great, as always don't use damaged batteries.

Sounds good then,I just ordered a clone to give it a whirl, and hopefully if I like it, the copper authentic I've got my eye on will still be around. I'll be rewrapping my batteries as well to give them a little bit more wrapper around the negative side of the battery. Got a derringer to go with it since it seems to be the rage these days.

Don't re wrap them, they will be too wide to slide in and out of the tube.
Just use good batteries with undamaged wrappers.
You'll b fine.
Don't try to re-invent the wheel. Just do it properly and follow the SOP.

That concerning, all my batteries had the original wrappers removed due to wear and were rewrapped. Are the tolerances that tight in the tube?

You used the batteries so much the shrink wrap wore off?
I think you need some new batteries.

Don't worry about it, they should be fine.

No, they didn't wear off, they ended up with little tears or chips in them here and there from coming on and off the charger, or in an out of mods. So I took off the old wraps and put on new ones. The 4 batteries that I have in regular rotation are about 3-4 months old. LGs and Samsungs.

I have a couple Panasonic batts that came from the factory with no lip around the negative end so I re-wrapped one of them with standard heatshrink and it ended up way too thick to fit in any of my mods . The SMPL being the tightest fitting of the bunch, I'd be skeptical of any re-wraps fitting in it unless it's super thin.

I have half a dozen re-wrapped batteries and none of them have any issues in my SMPL mods, you're not shrinking the wrap enough if the battery doesn't fit when you are done.

Works with every mod and 18 series battery I own, even my Nemesis which is a tight fit with OEM wrapped batteries works with re-wrapped batteries.

Yeah, standard heat shrink is pretty thick, there's much thinner stuff though, FT stock some, have used it and can confirm it works fine in the smpl.

Yeah the rubber electrical wire heat shrink is much thicker, probably 200% thicker than the plastic shrink.

I'd been rewrapping my batteries with shrink wrap from Illumn.com - Flashlights, Batteries, Carry Gear, Intelligent LED Lighting, and More!. They are a bit snug in my stingray, but havent had problems yet.

Spend some time here and you'll see your very question asked dozens, if not hundreds, of times. Short answer: for any number of reasons some folks perceive the value, others don't. Spend your money how you see fit.
