Snow is an insulator. It keeps the frost from driving deep in the ground.

true - but i'm still puzzled. we had some hard freezes here in the winter and hardly ever have snow cover but i never had problems with the septic tank. had some busted water pipes last year at our commercial properties though

Haven't had frozen septic here. Maybe we use more water in Michigan.
What if you took 2 hot showers per day? Dumped some heat into the system?
Ground here only freezes to about 6 inches. Maybe a bit more for real cold winters. Although, seems like some cities had a problem with water pipes last year or so. The -20 temps really did them in. People were running water (trickle) out hoses to keep the water flowing and thawing pipes. I think Fran's correct about snow cover too.
