since i'm a dunce and usually don't bother with powerball etc i threw some money in the trash a few games ago :?:
i had no idea that just matching the powerball pays something

There *IS* one game - I don't recall which one - where matching NO numbers also
pays out. It might be "Pick 10", but that's a NY-only game, I believe. YOU pick
10 numbers, THEY draw 20 out of 80. Keno-ish.

Oh... and you should not throw losing tickets away.

If you HAPPEN to win big enough (lottery, casino, etc.) to generate a 1099-G,
you can write off gambling losses. That came in handy in 1998 for me when I
hit a good jackpot in Vegas. (Never to be repeated, so far.)

Also...

Casino Hint:

If you are playing a machine and your credits are getting WAY up there, keep
playing (if you want) BUT CASH OUT occasionally. You can win $1000 (example)
a hundred times, but cashing out before the 1099-G trigger point keeps you out
of tax territory regardless of total winnings. In the example, that would be
$1,000,000 tax-free... however far-fetched.

(That would NOT have helped me... hit it big on ONE spin.)
