The wick runs down into the tank and wicks the liquid up to the coil

So there is a hunk 'o cotton hanging down into the tank soaking up
the liquid. Isn't that a bit gross-looking? Why have that when the
wick could be all nice and tidy and hidden?

Every time I see an rba (of whatever species) taken apart with a
liquid-soaked cotton glob visible, it reminds me of a plug of cerumen.
The kind from a doctor-assisted irrigation. I prefer NOT to see it.

Most of my e-liquid is on the clear side so mine doesn't look like that It's nice and white

I like being able to see what is going on in there myself, if it starts getting ugly I know to change it
You on the other hand won't know until you open things up and take a good look, ewwww!!!
