Ok, what is VOIP phone and how can it work for me. I see deals that are really cheap, but not sure how good they are? My landline is currently connected with cable company, which I already said...duh!!

VOIP = Voice Over Internet Protocol

not sure how well it would replace a landline

HAM operators use it to boost a radio that is for close range to potentially global range

... Just got an email from cable company, and they then raised the rate for my phone by $30. ...

Your internet will go up as well because, well, you are now "UNbundled".

$110 (original cost)
-$50 (Hulu)
------
$60 savings
-$30 (telephone)
------
$30 savings

Now wait for the internet increase and subtract that from the $30.

Just call me "Dave Downer".

 i now can hit the road and face the day! :)

That sounds simple enough and pretty much what I figured. Just got an email from cable company, and they then raised the rate for my phone by $30. Yes, I still have a landline. Need to talk Marsha out of that one! I am really angry at this point. They get you one way or another. I told Marsha yesterday that this is probably what they would do.

Hi KC and same to you....:)
if your phone comes through your cable company i'm pretty sure it is no longer a 'landline' - sure looks like voip to me ;)

...oh... and you will no longer have that nice, neat cable
program guide. Instead, a mish-mash of what Hulu has.

If you get another service (eg: Netflix), add that to the
mish-mash.

(And subtract Netflix cost from the $30.)

Rinse and repeat for each additional subscription service.

A few friends have cut the cord from cable and telephone, keeping
just internet.

In each and every case, they admit to now paying quite a bit MORE
for TV entertainment. (In all THOSE cases, because "more variety"
is well worth their dollars.) ( ) (As if the 300+ channels did not
provide enough "variety".)

My "in-my-mind" reply is you can watch only 1 thing at a time AND
there are only 24 hours in a day to watch what they BRAG about
DVRing.

No... LESS than 24 hours in a day.

I'll start:

24 (hours in a day)
-8 hours (average sleep)
-----
16 hours left

What other subtractions can YOU think of???

Yeah, because you're no longer in the "triple play" plan. :D

You're right, they get you, or they get you.

I'm seeing prices for voipo, ax voice with decent reviews. Prices starting at 6.20 if you prepay for a year, and 8.25 at another one. Unlimited incoming, 200 minutes outgoing, which I'm not a phone person, on one and unlimited outgoing on another. With VOIP, can I still call ANYONE? In other words, is it the same as my cable company, where everyone doesn't have to have the same VOIP or land line company? Lordy, I am dumbed down in my old age. If I can get a different voip than my cable, that's another 25 off the bill. I love you guys for putting up with me!!

Thank you, Dave Downer . But you are right, unless you can outsmart them just a little.
We almost never watch cable anymore. All our shows are ad free on hulu and netflix. So there's that. $50 for no ads, old and new shows, live and local, dvr recording in the cloud. Sure beats what the cable offers.
Don't use the phone all that much, and if I can get a cheap deal, with decent features and quality, I'll save another $25
So, if I can get it like this:

    $110 (original cost)
    - $50 (Hulu)
    $60 Savings
    +$ 37 (phone)
    $97 Savings
    -$8 (phone)
    $89 savings
That's what I'm trying to do!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Have fun reading my pluses, minuses and underlines

Read VOIP as "Voice over internet" (since IP pretty much equals INTERNET in this case). IP, by the way, is just a protocol for computers/devices to use to communicate data.

    Like KC said.

So, if your internet goes out, your phone goes out too.

As to what happens on the OTHER end, what the person you're calling needs, depends on the provider, but as a general rule, THEY at their central office or via some contract make the "bridge" between the internet and the regular phone lines. Somehow. Check reviews and any history you can find as to how well they do that.

Does that help? Basically, it's all "magic" somewhere, either from your internet provider or from a third-party.
Depends on if you rent your internet modem too. If you're not using their VOIP, but use someone else as a provider, you may have additional options and save a modem rental fee, but you'd have to buy a ?200? cable modem maybe with VOIP built in. If not built into the modem, you need a "box" somewhere to plug in the phone line to the internet modem.

I have Tracfone for the cell. $99/year and the first 400 minutes. There's also
    data and text.

I have over 1,000 banked minutes. Shows how much I use the cell.

(Still have landline because, well, quality of connections. ALL cell phones
    really suck at sound.)

Yea, my phone is already through internet, so, like tibs, said, I guess I am already using VOIP. I checked for other voip in my area and 2 came up with high ratings....VoiPo and Ax Voice both got good ratings, with VoiPo the highest and really, really reasonable rates.

Do you already pay for a cell phone?
I have a SafeLink for emergencies only, but can upgrade to a smart phone if need be.

We have a $20 per month dumb-phone emergency type of cell phone, was handy when the internet went down. But other than that, yeah, I'm like you, I don't use cell phones. Guess I'm old, or just don't care about the damn things. They're handy for some things, but mostly I don't care, I have a desktop or if I'm away, I'm just not on the net.

Sometimes having google maps or something would be helpful. Other than that, meh.

But it's something for you to consider, since some plans are cheap and IDK what your current e-phone cost is.
