So, there I was.... typing away at my work computer, when I received a phone call from a fellow NCO. He says "Hey, what's the reg on using ecigs?" I reply with the reg number covering it (ironically, they are lumped in with tobacco....). Anyways, he then tells me that one of the young airmen I know was just accosted while sitting in his car on break, with the doors closed, in the parking lot by a SNCO for not using his ecig at the smoke pit. I was like "You've gotta be kidding me... I could understand if he was right outside the building, or walking around with it, being obnoxious and unprofessional... but in his parked car, in the parking lot, with the door closed, while on his allotted break, minding his own business?!?" I guess I just don't get why they want folks that use ecigs to get away from the second hand smoke. Next, I'll be expecting to get pulled over by SF for using my ego while driving...... While they are at it... start making a fuss about the poor analog users that do the same, or while driving also..... OK, I'm done ranting for now. Just had to get that off my chest.

Sounds like he got "Chiefed". As a SNCO myself, I hate guys like that. As far as I'm concerned, as long as your personal conveyance is 50ft from a building entrance, you can designate it as a smoking area. Maybe we should make "vaping Area" signs for our cars. Or designate our e-cigs as "inhalers". I'm seriously thinking of suggesting to our base leadership to have vaping pits designated, because smokers STINK. As a former smoker, I have already apologized to my wife for the obnoxious smell. I feel your pain, bro.

On a side note, what's your job? My bro in-law is inbound to your base, just graduated tech as a POL troop.

It is stuff like this that makes me happy to be out.
Since when were we not allowed to smoke in our cars on base? All of our smoke pits were uncovered for the most part, so on smoke breaks, I would take my airmen to my POV to smoke during rain, cold, etc. Then again, I was a pretty lax NCO unless it came to actual duty-related things. But, not a word was ever said. Not even by non-SF who used to love trying to get us on anything they could.

It's a bunch of dam ned silliness to me. I just wish the folks in charge of stuff would actually either take a few minutes out of their busy schedules to either look up themselves, or ask folks that know more, before making (by my perception) dumb rules. This applies to both in the military AND elected politicians....

/rant off

Related article on leadership...

Blind adherence to regulation and rule without the temper of maturity is not leadership; it is autocracy. When common sense and situational awareness are pitched out the porthole and replaced with the narrowly focused dogma of domination the result can be unsettling, if not frankly outrageous. Sadly, there are many examples of such “leadership” in action overseas.

Too funny! I turned my NCOIC on to vaping... Now we just puff away wherever. Last field exercise, my CSM cornered me while I was puffing on my Legacy/6ml tank and started asking all sorts of questions. Apparently he is now going to buy one for his wife.

My guess is whomever it was that hemmed up your buddy just got hemmed up by someone else. Poop doesn't roll up hill in the military! Certain times just require a head-down-mouth-shut approach before driving on.

I know the feeling. We have change of command coming up in a couple weeks. In the process of doing pre-inventory on all our medical sets. Not fun.

Change of Command - AKA "You're being voluntold to welcome a new CC with smiles on your faces and you'll be in your blues!"
I once was part of a CoC where the new CC said, "No one wants to be here. Let's get this over with quick to get these guys out."

That is kick .... IMO, a CC that at least gets that we'd rather just get back to getting the mission done, as opposed to standing around for a hour or so. Time honored tradition? Sure, I'm down for that, but doesn't need to be painfully drawn out.

We just got a new CC, and he sounds like a crusty old school SNCO when talking to us.... IE: very colorful language. Guess that comes with him being prior enlisted LOL!

It's all subjective really. I don't think MOS has anything to do with it.

Bottom line is that perception is reality. If someone sees me blowing clouds in a non-smoking area, they decide at that very moment whether it is worth their time to argue it. Once that decision is made, it doesn't matter whether it's an analog, a PV, a small camp fire...

This particular instance is truly silly, but we, as vapers, need to remember the perception aspect. Yes, we know what it is, but others don't.

If vapers aren't careful with who they do it around, it'll wind up being viewed just like analogs.

I cant vouch for other branches, but the fact that aafes now provides an e-cig option on Army posts is a huge win for vapers. Just be smart about it and expect the occasional ..... w/ more rank to flex on you.

Keep your head down, your mouth shut & vape on!

keeping my mouth shut is quite hard.....haha.......our CSM saw me doing it in the shop once and went all crazy but after i explained to him what it was he was kinda amazed.......he then went to look for some regs on it and found nothing so now he gets off by telling everyone about it cause he thinks its cool......

everytime he sees me now hes like "hey take a puff of that electric thing you got".....

MOS does in fact have alot to do with it also.......some MOS's are more relaxed and dont worry about the BIG ARMY bull crap that goes on......in my career field we usually dont do the rank thing and wear civilian clothes alot. I was once infantry and the reclassed to EOD and there is a big difference....

MOS has some to do with it, units and what you are doing has a lot more to do with it though. Funny how those outside of my unit think just because we are at the Pentagon, and wear the Army patch we are big army, anything could be further from the truth lol. I have turned almost all of the smokers in our office into vapers, so much easier to not make that long walk to the smelly smoke pit, better PT scores, and less money.
I am on my way out though, med board too much damage done in the last 6 deployments, after the last round of MRI's the doc is not letting me do any more PT tests, sort of been out of the PT loop for the last 3 years anyways with injuries and being in the group settings. Non-deplyable is my key that it is time to let the med board do it's thing and move on to the civilian part of things.

Well, can't speak about how Army/Navy/Marines/Coast Guard do things, but the AF actually put it into the tobacco use AFI 40-102, so ecigs are covered. Knee jerk I think. If it was added because of perceptions and looking professional, I can get that. Like walking and smoking in uniform, not good.

I just get upset/frustrated/angry over stupid stuff like this, doesn't seem right even if its written as the rule.

I guess if needed, hit up the restroom.
