Yep,dont charge with a Data USB cable it will blow up.

A USB data cable is a USB cable with the pin that carries power missing or unwired. Assuming you can find a way to attach it, it won't blow up, it won't do anything.

The reason people argue you shouldn't use a laptop is because different USB ports can output different currents.

It should be perfectly safe if you get a powered USB hub, and personally I think the risk from using any old USB port on a computer is hyped - just makes sense to avoid charging ports if you can identify them, perversely.

People also say it could damage the computer - as far as I know, unless it does blow up, that's a myth.

Folks: maybe we, collectively, have more information than we think.

Consider:
1) A lot of these battery issues are either malfunctions of the charger or
2) the battery is old, not holding a charge anymore, and gets continual-charged because it never sustains cut-off voltage.

#2 is a prime suspect, but #1 is also.

I suspect the chargers need more "smarts" to detect a battery that is too old to be charged.

Charge in a safe place. That's the first rule. I'm not even going to get into the overnight thing...really "long term unattended" thing...because I know people will do it anyway. But if it blows up/catches fire....you don't want it on a couch or stack of papers. I think the charging bags are a good idea too.

Maybe your battery shouldn't be swinging from the charging cord in the car while you're driving. Maybe it shouldn't be on the couch. Or sitting on a stack of papers.

The lack of documentation and instructions is a disgrace. People don't know any better.

And there have been laptop fires and cell phone fires due to charging. This battery stuff is inherently dangerous...but caution is the name of the game.

I agree with most of that, but I'm still suspicious of charging bags - they trap heat, so even if they reduce the likelihood of catastrophic results from failure, they must increase the chance of failure.

I think, ideally, you'd be best off with something like a biscuit tin with a fairly large hole in the centre of the lid to allow airflow and cables. Obviously being careful to tape up the edges of the hole so you don't fray your cables. If you're charging multiple things, ideally put it on stilts and point a fan at it, or put it by a breezy window or something.

Do I expect people to make something like that? Nope, I haven't.

I kinda hope a company will step in and make a charging station along those lines, with a few built in USB ports, standard plug sockets, and a mount for a computer case fan that can go in one of the USB sockets. Would have to be big enough to fit a conventional li-ion charger in.

I'd probably buy one if it was sensibly priced.

Dont use this type of USB cable to charge something like a Ego , it will heat up.
