The vitriol directed at cigarette smokers boggles the mind.

I show and demo my e-cig wherever I go, and have yet to be met by anything but smiles. But in a public place? The hands will start fanning the air and management will soon pay the e-smoker a visit. I no longer even try to e-smoke in, say, a restaurant. Who wants the hassle?

Cigarette smokers are pond scum. And we look like we're smoking a cigarette.

But I do smoke a real pipe, with real tobacco, and will say that this relic gets all kinds of favorable comment and attention if done outside. I can sit and puff the pipe in a Cracker Barrel rocking chair and make lots of new friends. People will actually say, "That smells so good, not like those nasty cigarettes" as they fan the air in the direction of someone smoking a cigarette.

Yep, it's cigarettes that are hated so vehemently.

E-cigs scream out for a unique design.

In places where smoking is permitted, I vape away and do so as conspicuously as possible so that people might actually ask me about it. I LOVE to show my new toys to everyone. Some of those who have been most interested are non-smokers who have smokers in their lives. I feel as if I'm on a mission to share the joys of e-smoking. :)

Where smoking is not permitted, I generally refrain because I don't want the hassle. Or, as described by others, I'll take a few furtive puffs and hold in the vapor until most of it dissipates before exhale. Just don't want the hassle.

Plus, as already noted, if you simply start vaping in a non-smoking area without talking with management, you run the risk of a very negative reaction, one that could set the tone for how e-cigs are treated in that establishment from that point on. Far better to take a moment to educate the management and get advance permission. (Although, even that isn't always enough, as we can see from the original post. :( )

I love how my e-cigarettes do NOT look like tobacco cigarettes. Most people assume I'm sucking on a pen until they see the vapor. :D I think that by making e-cigs look like something other than tobacco cigarettes, we reduce confusion in public as well as promote perhaps a bit more tolerance among nonsmokers.

however since i started to use the e-cig, i have been shocked into how narrow-minded the public can be. On yahoo answers uk, one reply, when he realised that e-cigs were harmless, said he hoped e-cigs contained radiation so we would all die!?!

Sadly a lot of people have been getting a very sadistic pleasure out of the whole 'hate the smoker' thing and they are going to feel really upset and frustrated by smokers finding an alternative and spoiling all their 'fun'. They are the one's who will try everything in their power to raise just as much hatred for e-'smokers'.

The big problem is ignorance, people was told smoking kills everyday, everytime and the smoke of cigarettes smells really bad, so people belived it and take it even personal, what this people never has realised is that nicotine is a LEGAL drug in most countries (just like caffeine) so, nothing can stop us to use nicotine if we want to as long as nicotine keeps legal, what we need to do is prove that vaping is not dangeorus for other people (if it is true, at this point we don't know) and if it comes to be dangerous for others then we will need to follow the rules of free-smoke areas, but this is not about health because if those groups were concerned about health then they will be condeming air polution because that kills a lot of people too.

So if we can prove that second hand vapor is harmless they don't have any reason to complain, because nicotine is LEGAL, if they really want us to quit, make nicotine ilegal and that is it.

A new design for the devices would help a lot, but the only thing that can save us is knowledge and fight the ignorance.

That is ancient history. After that court decision, Congress immediately began the process to give the FDA full authority over all tobacco. That legislation has been written (but likely won't be addressed by Congress any time soon, since more pressing matters are occupying our fine elected officials).

Giving the FDA authority over tobacco is only one piece of legislation. The first piece became law a few days ago, with the massive tax increase on all tobacco products. Next before Congress is a bill to ban all postal shipment of tobacco products. No exceptions. Another would ban private delivery operations from delivering tobacco to any address not a business.

The entire idea is to force tobacco users to buy exclusively from a local store, where full taxes will be collected. Whatever gaps pop up, expect them to close quickly. Good news: E-cigs aren't on the radar yet. But ...
