Hey gang, I have a questions about this method. I have a brass cleaner that I just fired up, but it doesn't have a heating feature. Is heat a necessity or does it just speed up the process? Does it have to be done in cycles?

The US action will heat the water without it. My issue is keeping the heat down.
125° F has been proposed as ideal.

I do mine in 30-45 minute cycles over the course of a couple of days.
I only use glass bottles and I leave the caps off for about 24 hours.
My juice usually gets at least 4-5 hours in the UC before leaving it alone for at least a week.

heat is not nessessary. you can start off with warm tap water and as long as you run cycles the water will remain warm. Cycles don't need to be ran back to back you can spread the steeping over a few days if you wish. When the water turns cold just replace it with warm tap water.

... Bobalex here mentioned his one-stop-shop vendor (ecigexpress) and I saw they have a "starter kit". Is this a really good start or should I go with something else? ...

It looks okay but ... there's always a "but" isn't there? ... I would rather not be limited to a 100% PG or VG or a 50/50 mix. Now that might seem contradictory as I've stated many many times before that I'm a 100% PG guy ... but that was then and this is now. I'm now a 70/30 PG/VG guy and I don't know why I didn't do it sooner. I'd follow Danny's guidelines about stuff to get. That way you'll have what you need and avoid having extraneous DIY gear/flavorings.

... The other thing I really don't get is over at the e-liquid calculator (e-Liquid Calculator :: Berrymint Mix) ...

Ejuice Me Up: (eJuice Me Up - Best eJuice Calculator) is my fave no-brainer e-liquid calculator. And it comes packed with recipes for those more ambitious than I.

Hey, quick survey question ... do you guys ever run without the plastic basket? The manual mentions it reducing vibrations by 30%, but I've also heard people say it's harmful for the ultrasonic to run without it.
Thoughts?

The last batch I made I used the basket For The First Time. I make 280 mls at a time so there's a long time in-between batches. I had read the posts about having the bottles in direct contact with the bottom of the tank was harmful so I was determined to use the basket this time. I couldn't find the basket that came with the UC and used a smaller basket from a previous UC.

The smaller basket seemed to dampen the vibrations a great deal. So much so that when I stuck my finger in the water I felt nothing at all. In the past when I stuck my finger in it felt like a mild electric shock. I figured if I can't feel it ... nuthin's happening. So I took the basket out and resumed with the batch. It took about an hour longer because I had added VG to the mix.

Cleaning out a cupboard I found the basket for my UC. I'll use it when I make my next batch. It covers the bottom of the tank completely and should work better than the smaller basket. I assume ... uh oh ... we all know what that means ... that four 70ml bottles in a smaller basket placed in the center of the tank concentrated too much weight on the transducer. Using the larger basket should distribute the weight evenly.

Though I've never used a basket before I will in the future because I'm not interested in buying another UC right now. Even with its 8 minute limit ... I'm not willing to burn out my present UC for the dream machine 30 minute model. I also never let the UC rest in between the 8 minute cycles. 3-4 continuous hours isn't a recipe for UC longevity. I'll be a good GUCE-er from now on. If I lose 30% of the UC's effectiveness that just means another hour or so for the process. Giving the UC a rest will tack on another hour. So my 3-4 hour GUCE-ing will take 4-5. Maybe 6. Big deal. Turning a 4 week process into 4-6 hours ... priceless.

The other thing I noticed with my unit, if I try to run without the basket, the bottles will eventually fall off the "hump" where the transducer is attached underneath in the center of the tank. The basket has a nice matching circle there that keeps the bottles from wandering.

The trick to using a basket to minimize dampening is to elevate it so it does not sit on the bottom of the tank. Most inexpensive UCs don't suspend the basket. Use some wire or sticks hang the basket from the top of the tank.

A metal basket will dampen less than a plastic one. If you are handy, you could fabricate one from wire mesh you can get at the hardware store.

It really is best not to have anything resting on the bottom of the tank.

Here is what i did to my basket to raise it from the bottom (cable ties & #12 ga. solid wire for handles). I also used cable ties to keep the basket flat as it tends to bend from the heat and the weight of the bottles. I also just started using a small tupperware container with the bottom cut out to keep the ultrasonic waves on the bottles. (I will get a picture of this on here later tonight).

That's a very simple, yet elegant solution. It's exactly the type of thing I had in mind when I described it above.

Here is how i try to contain the UC waves, and i also keep the basket about 1/4" above the bottom of the tank.

Its hard to tell from the picture, but do you have water in the UC tank or just the smaller bowl?

If you don't have water on the tank, then you won't get very much action in the bowl. The tank should always be full when you run it.

Also, the small bowl will tend to do a lot of dampening, decreasing action on your juice.
