I still have the three kanger/Ego's setting here. I have continued to sample off and on all week. "B" has remained my favorite. "A" has gotten better (CS still harsh and "green"). Now that I know that "B" is the UC mix, It tastes even better to me. (I recently purchased the largest UC unit from Harbor Freight and I've really been wanting to justify that purchase!!)

MikeP, again THANK YOU!! You will go down in history!!

For me, sample b or birdies remains to be far superior in flavor and depth, and I don't have a UC =( but need one now.

Honestly if you are doing it by crock pot already then the difference is so slight in my opinion I wouldn't rush out to replace it with a UC. If you don't have a crock pot already then a UC would be worth consideration.

Unless $70 shows up on my counter, I'm sticking with the SC.

Having used the UC for the last 8 - 9 months and never did the crock pot I have to admit now that I've sampled a mix from the crock pot side by side with the UC and I'm equally impressed with both methods and really can't recommend one over the other. Either method will work great.

Most enjoyable diversion...

I am an old movie (and TV) comedy freak. I own every episode of McHales Navy as well as Sgt. Bilko. Also every one of the Bowery Boys movies...
I'd be happy top send you a few DVD's if you ever want to use some of this footage.

You are very creative!! Thanks for sharing.

Personally, I crank it up just to get the water heated quickly, but I reduce the temp when it reaches 122F. After a good shake, I make sure my caps are well secured and place them in small freezer bags, jic of leaks/shattered glass. I haven't had either happen, but it's an easy precaution. In terms of length of time, it depends on the quantity of your mix. Some people do 4 hours for 30 mls. I make much larger bottles, so it depends. After MikeP's testing, I tend towards keeping the water around 120-125F.

I discovered this thread about a month ago, started at the beginning, and about a week later ordered my U C.
Kept reading (like a good novel - plenty of intrigue and suspense near the end) while waiting for delivery and a chance to set up my first Speed Steep batch of my favorite homemade brew.
Took me about a day to buzz my 30 ml sample - 30 minute cycles X 8 = 4 hours - and was impressed with the action as well as the final taste.

I did not shake or otherwise mix my 3 flavor batch, instead I watched as the UC vibrated all the ingredients together very well after the 1st 30 minute cycle.
I set the tank water level just high enough to almost float the glass flask and could really see the effect on the juice inside. I'm amazed!
Thank you all for the work and sharing your input on this interesting topic.

I been using the UC method, but would like to try the crockpot method, so I don't have to hunt thru pages, can someone post a quick how to? I believe I read previously about staying at or just below 125 degrees. Are the bottles just tossed in to float around for 4 hrs or banded together like the UC method?
Thanks all!

I start out with really hot water from a tea kettle, and mix with cold as needed to get it about 150F. Crock pots are slow to heat, so I save a lot of time this way. I fill the water level up to be even with the level of juice in the bottles, and keep the bottles upright. I always fear leakage if a bottle tips over and the lid isnt sealing perfectly. If doing multiple bottles I believe I get better thermal transfer if I let the bottles have some water space between them as opposed to banding them together.

Good idea with heating the water first. Durrrr me for not thinking about that before. Will do next time. Thanks MP.
