I started vaping as a means to get nicotine where I couldn't smoke (airport, trans oceanic flights, desk at work etc). I wasn't so much wanting to quit smoking but inevitably that's what happened. I haven't purchased a pack of analogs except when I forgot my battery charger and eGo batteries at work. It took me well over a week to finish them where I had been a PAD smoker previously. My advice is start with something simple. Try lots of juice until you find something you like. Once you get a favorite, venture out to a nicer set up. Don't think that your first favorite juice will be your favorite forever. As your taste and smell come back you most likely will move to other juices.

My last stinky was four days ago and it just about killed me.

Like Ripshod, I tried cig-a-likes a couple of times (Fall 2010, Winter 2011) Finally in Feb 2014, gave it one more try - and then upgraded to better equipment. Once I found the hardware and "software" (flavors) I liked, dropped cigarettes completely and haven't looked back. Truthfully, though, there have been a couple times (like when I'm working out in the yard) that I think having a cigarette would be more "handy", but I'm not going to buy (or bum) another cigarette again. I get all the same "sensations" of smoking, but without the horrible taste and smell :) I get the "hand-to-mouth" (which was mostly why I smoked in the first place.) You'll know if you'll never want to go back to a cigarette. Many posters out here comment that they may still have one or two a day. It's all their decision. It just sounds like they're no longer pounding a pack or two (or more) per day like they used to.

Find your peace - it's within reach

That, in my VERY VERY Totally Honest opinion, is the key to quitting cigarettes and switching to vaping only.

Without the Desire to get OFF cigarette completely more than likely you will go back to smoking or continue to smoke longer, if not forever, when starting to vape.

You're right - at least, that would apply to most people.

I did not intend to quit when I got my first kit, though. I just wanted something to hold me over when I cold not smoke. I did not want to go out in the cold to smoke.

I smoked for over 35 years, 1.5 - 2 PAD, and I was still enjoying it, not wanting to quit. Even so, first day I had that e-cig I only had three analogs. Within a couple days, I sort of forgot to smoke!

I smoked for 37 years and had given up on ever being able to quit. My last cigarette was on Feb 27, 2011. Over 3 years ago.

Miracles do happen!

I do still vape and have no intention of quitting. If I happen to cut down, fine. I'm more concerned that I never smoke again than whether or not I vape.

Even if I do quit, I'll always keep some supplies handy as protection against any possible relapse. Better safe than sorry.

It was a gradual process for me as well. I smoked 2 packs a day for 11 years, and started to make the change initially because of all the bans on smoking (bars, airports etc). After I picked up my first analogs I still smoked because they didn't give me the same satisfaction as smoking. I persisted through it and eventually the technology advanced on ecigs, and provided the community with something that I consider a much more satisfying and quality vape. I really had to find something that was more enjoyable than smoking and replace it with something better.

I had considered myself as a "professional" quitter. Dozens of attempts over the last 40 years. Then one night 3 years ago August I got tired of being semi professional and joined the big leagues. Now an all star working on getting into the hall of shame! Last cig was August 17, 2011, never again will I need to quit!

When I first started vaping I was finishing off a carton of cigarettes I'd bought while waiting on my starter kit. It took me 2 weeks to finish that carton, unheard of before vaping, and do vaping only. My taste had improved during that 2 weeks and I can remember waking up one morning and tasting my juice for the first time, I couldn't get enough! I love vaping and all the flavors available especially since I DIY my ejuice. Anything I can dream up is what I make :).

I have totally quit smoking (I smoked cigars, not cigarettes). When I started vaping, I continued to smoke for the first two days. On the third day I did have a cigar all day, until after dinner. I vaped as much as I wanted during that day and did not have any cravings. After dinner I lit up a cigar, took two puffs, got a headache and didn't like the taste. Put that one down and haven't picked up one since.

My wife still smokes. She has cut down dramatically, but still has a few cigarettes each day. It looks like it is going to take her some time to make the complete transition.

Also, welcome to ECF!

Sometimes it takes longer for people but she will make it. :)

I was a pack a day smoker most of my years, but was down to less than 10 cigs a day for about the last five years of my 36 years as a smoker. My parents desperately wanted me to quit smoking so just before my birthday they took me to our local vape shop and bought me my first device. I ended up with an aerotank and a smok vv winder 1300 and 50ml of 12mg blueberry ry4. I have been vaping for exactly 9 weeks now and haven't had a smoke since the moment I walked out of that vape shop. I am a singer and I have noticed I can hit the high notes I couldn't before and my voice is much clearer than before. I have already cut my nicotene in half since I started and I'm never looking back! Oh and that ry4 only satisfied my for about two weeks before I discovered bakery flavors! No more tobacco flavors for me, I mean I did quit smoking didn't I?

I quit within 24 hours of getting my first (very awful) setup. I started with one of those 510 batteries that looks like a cigarette. Used it for a couple of weeks before I upgraded. Get a good set up, then I'll give you the advice I was given: vape as much as you want. Don't try to limit yourself, chain vape for days if you need. That's what kept me from smoking. After about 24 hours, I tried a cigarette and already didn't want it. If you keep your blood nicotine levels high, you won't want one...physically. Vaping helps with the psychological and physical part. I smoked for 24 years and after more than 6 months, I still have a nearly full carton somewhere in the house and I'm not at all interested. I'm still completely addicted to nicotine, but I don't stink, food tastes good, and something people rarely talk about-sex improves 10 fold :D
