Has anyone tried removing the paint from an SL? My concern is getting the paint out of all the little holes. The mod is in perfect condition but just not my favorite color so I'm trying to decide if I should strip it raw or sell it and buy a new TRA.

Hmmm…to strip or not to strip….that is the question.

CaptSteve posted this in another thread yesterday:

Custom I just stripped a powder coated, the Grand in the pictures I posted in less than 10 min. No sanding nothing and no lacquer thinner either. I'll post for you the brand of stripper to use. Great stuff will save you lots of work buddy

Hopefully he'll be along shortly to help.

Good point, Penny. No way to know the condition of the aluminum under the paint. I have polish that I used on my TRA SL mini. I only polished it twice and while it's not mirror finish it's close to it and nice and smooth. I really prefer this look and feel and was hoping to achieve the same on the now painted Grand but I'm not convinced it's worth the effort. I also cringe a little at the thought of stripping a Reo that doesn't really need it. Maybe I'll put it up on the classies first to see if there are any takers and if not THEN take on the stripping and polishing project.

I've stripped two Grands already with a chemical stripper and it took the best part of 10min. I used this but any chemical paint stripper will do the trick.

These two black Grands (the left one is now an LP as well) started life like this

.....and now the one on the right looks like this

.....and the one on the left is currently a work in progress but it looks like this

Don't be worried about stripping, it's dead easy and with a chemical paint stripper everything will come off real easy. Just get a pair of gloves that can handle chemicals because this stuff you don't want to get on your hands, it's nasty.

Wow…look at that polish you achieved, Capt! Amazing. I'm assuming you used a buffing wheel?

Yep buffing wheels and plenty of elbow grease

Been flying now since 1984, it's all I know how to do the rest is just a hobby and a way to vent and relax.
