Def normal. try and pick up a Bernzomatic hand torch from the box stores as I found lighters dont get hot enough fast enough and will leave soot on the wicks. They are also more fun to accidently hold it to close to furniture and ruin it
. Got new furniture a couple weeks ago.
I cut 2.50ish inches one fold and trim if needed.
Edit - Less is better than too much by far.

1mm eko wool, 3 times, so its 3mm thick.
30g kanthal, 5 wraps. ohming out at 1.3. works great, on grants vanilla custard and my homebrew vanilla custard
The only thing your lighter is good for is burning your wire before you wrap it. Flame from a lighter will do nothing to silica, except turn it black like you mentioned, and probably give it a bad taste.
Got it. I just ordered a torch, this one, but what is the torch supposed to do to silica? I am assuming, melt micro particles, right?
I use my gas stove for my wire and eco also silica works great of course I get a very nice blue flame from my stove.The above was true think a lighter would only blacken the wick try your stove top burner if you have gas mine works great even for oxidized ss mesh.
I changed my mind in the last second and ordered Blazer GB4001-02 Stingray Butane Torch. According to the description, it says that flame temperature gets up to 2,500 degrees F. Is that safe to use on the silica and wire?
With silica, theoretically, no part of it is combustible (at least to a certain temp that we'll never reach, of course). Torching it removes any foreign contaminants from manufacturing, handling, etc. If the torch is melting anything on the wick, it won't be silica particles. Some people also boil their wicks, and some people coil them without any prep
Just hold the torch to the wick small areas at a time until that area glows white hot
That is the one I have and it works great.I got my fuel at Home Depot because it was cheaper and it was the Benzomatic brand. about $4.oo a can.
Where are you guys getting your ekowool wicks and what size should I purchase?
folks have recommended size back a few posts, but Kidneypuncher has tons of rba accessories; including eko in different sizes and lengths...
Hey guys just joined the kayfun-est crew. Man oh man why did i waitthis long. Guess i was prejudice cause of gennies but this thing is not anything like a gennie. Only complaint is that its a juice hog and it coming with a plastictank instead of a glass one.i mean come on for the price we py for this thing. Now time to look for a taifun. Then i'll be really having loads of Fun.
the clear window is threaded and can be replaced by an ss part. The price is probably about flawless engineering and delivering a system that really works... just guessing
the tayfun looks like a nice piece although imo it is closer to a genny than a dripper. In the kayfun the juice is pumped into the chamber by a pressure mechanism. The wick does not need direct contact with the liquid in the tank as it is "dripped" into the chamber.
I'm a big fan of gennies but lets say the main disadvantage of gennies (besides the leaking) is that the juice is altered by all the cooking that is taking place at coil level. Just grab another KF!

Do you torch the wick at a maximum temperature?
At first, I also almost ordered the Benzomatic butane (3x refined), but I did a bit of reading and decided to try Vector 5x Refined Premium Butane Gas, lots of good reviews and plenty of inventory on Ebay.
I think it is just a matter of time until we can get a glass tank for the Kayfun using 3D printing.

Even without 3D glass printing, what they can do now is to make a version of the tank the same way Kanger's ProTank is made, i.e., the glass part is not threaded, but pressed in or "glued" between two metal pieces.

Just purchased my first Kayfun, and only have one question.
Flying on planes. I'm assuming the pressurized cabin will cause the Kayfun to leak out of the fill hole. Is there a way to prevent this from happening? For instance, could I put a piece of tape over the fill hole or something?

if it is upside down with the fill hole up while the plane is pressurizing then the excess air in the tank will be pushed out not the juice.
Easy enough... How long does it take for the plane to pressurize? 30 mins from takeoff or so? And I guess when it's DEpressurizing, there'll be no problem, as air will be sucked *into* the tank.
