Recently I was watching a tv show where the star was told he could not smoke in a California restaraunt but he saw another person using a vape pen. He says "but that guy can use that thing, whatever it is?"

The story line is apparently set at a time when vaping was fairly new. So later he is shown relaxing in his easy chair at home and he was puffing on a pen when his wife enters the room. She says "you look all relaxed, what is that"? enquiring about his vape pen. He told her "it's a nicotine vape, it's all the rage here in LA". Later he was smoking again.

So it caused me to ponder "what if?". What if early on the term nicotine vape would have stuck, not e-cig, digital cigarette and all those "cigarette" terms?
To me, the thing we do is nothing like an e-cig anymore. Even cig-a-like are largely shaped like a carpenter pencil. And big ole mechs look like a flashlight.

Is it too late to use a different term when referring to say, an Aegis Legend kit? Realizing the name of this forum uses the word cigarette, I just wonder if those times we are out in public enjoying a tastey puff or making a storm cloud and someone asks "what's that?" Do we call it an e-cig anymore?

What's your favorite term these days?
Since seeing that scene on my tv I call them "nicotine vape" now.

I just call it my vape. No e cig or nicotine as non-vapers think e cigs are another firm if death the tobacco companies are trying to hook their children on, and they think it's the nicotine in a cigarette that causes cancer. If I say vape, most just stop, and a few will ask more which then gives me a chance to explain it before turning them off from the first word I said.

I just tell people when they ask that it's what got me off a lifetime of smoking. If they say it's still smoke, then they get the extended version of why it's a benign activity compared to smoking.

I call it a vape mostly. A lot of non-vapers are familiar with the term vaping and get what I'm talking about. If I have to elaborate I will say "you know, one of those e-cigs"...
Nicotine vape is sometimes a necessary distinction; when I started vaping I ran across a lot of people who are convinced vaping has to be drug related somehow.

Way back when me and my wife started using cigalikes nobody knew what they were. Most people thought we were inhaling something else. We didn't know any other vapers and hadn't visited any forums. It had zero visibility in the media. We called them our smokers. We made that one up, glad it didn't catch on.

Now I just call it my vape.

Yeah, it's kinda hard to separate 'nicotine' and 'drug' these days.

I just began trying miniature pods and found when using one in a crowd their comments are more muted. Instead of the typical "don't those things explode" I hear "that smells good" or "do they really help you stop smoking?"....

Eh, it's a start. I suppose those same people don't realize their celphone can explode too. So they don't see any potential harm from a credit card sized vape where the users exhale causes the world around them to smell a little better for a few seconds.

I remind them that all nightshade plants contain nicotine. If they look puzzled I tell them Tomatoes, Potatoes, Eggplant, Peppers, etc.

You must be new. This is a debate that we had here nearly a decade ago. The consensus was that PV (personal vaporizer) was probably the most accurate and descriptive term. Most of us rejected the idea of calling them e-cigarettes exactly because of the strong negative connotations it includes.

But the name of the site and other factors really put the lid on that idea and here we are, stuck with e-cigarette forever.

Years ago Mrs. States and I tried the new fad 'the cig-a-like' for a time. The state I live in had recently passed no smoking in restaraunts. Nicotine vapes were so new that they weren't included (yet). After dinner in a restaraunt we pulled out our cig-a-like to enjoy an after dinner puff. To our dismay people around us thought we were smoking. Mom's clutched their children in horror. Dad's had looks on their faces like something stinks. A manager approached and said "you can't smoke in here". I replied "I'm not" and handed him my Fuma. He said "wow, that's awesome but it's disturbing other customers who think you're smoking". Politely we vacated knowing it would only be a matter of time before they too were banned in restaraunts.

Yet now I can pull out a flash drive from my pocket and stick it between my lips and draw no attention at all (as long as I take a stealth drag). For now lol.

Famous radio show host Rush Limbaugh spoke of vaping in a bar when they first came out. He vaped to quit smoking back then. He said he was booted from the place because he refused to stop since they weren't banned (yet). It seems that back then Hollywood hipsters were doing it in posh restaraunts in California and Hawaii. So the same Hollywood that made smoking cool so long ago may be the reason vaping is no longer allowed in restaraunts. That was long before the cloud machine so "thanks alot Hollyweirdos".
