Hey Nursie T,

I wanted to ask you.

That CPAP, will it help any with the breathlessness I've been experiencing or is it just to help one sleep better and get oxygenated better?

TT

It will make you feel better overall, TT! Your body needs oxygen to function properly, and you are NOT getting the oxygen you need. In proportion to the lack of oxygen, you are getting a build-up of CO2 (carbon dioxide) which is not good for you, either. Too little oxygen and too much CO2 affect ALL of your systems, all the way to the cellular level. I believe you will have so much more energy and feel so much better when you start getting the O2 you need. As far as the breathlessness....I'm not sure?? Two main reasons for breathlessness are lung problems and heart problems. Your doc said your heart valve wasn't "as bad" as he was afraid. So I'm assuming your heart checked out OK otherwise? No mention of Congestive Heart Failure? And as far as the lungs, have you been diagnosed with emphysema or COPD in the past?? So many factors to consider. But the body will try to take in more oxygen (increasing rate of breathing) if it perceives a lack of oxygen/increase in CO2 (as with OSA {obstructive sleep apnea}) so it may be that your breathlessness will also improve when you start wearing a CPAP.

The doctor says I don't have Congestive Heart Failure and I haven't been diagnosed with COPD or emphysema. Of course, after smoking for 55 years that wouldn't come as any huge surprise.

I do need to lose some weight, but that has accumulated largely due to the inactivity/breathlessness. I used to exercise two to four hours every day and was pretty active.

I do have a total blockage of one carotid artery but the other one is in real good shape.

That's all I know of ....
