I have dual coils that will do that. I just tried a different carto and it does a little hissing. Mine will also crackle at times depending on the voltage I am using.
I'm not even a 24 hr vet yet so don't take my word as gospel, but yes, sounds normal to me. Mine can hiss, and even pop sometimes.
Yes I get the crackling too. I kind of like the hissing noise cuz it reminds me a little of when you would take a drag on an analog. You would hear the paper burning. Just a little more quietly.
