I just picked up an Artistic Wire Coiling Gizmo. So far (two coils wrapped with it), the results are impressive and they are only going to get better. My issue is the second smallest coil rod is a bit too small and the third smallest is a bit too large for my preferred coil size. Has anyone come up with an easy way around this? With a little more practice, there will be no need for a torch at all when wrapping coils with this thing.

Apparently if you get the less fancy version (this one) the 2mm size is perfect. Of course I found this out after buying the deluxe version. A lot of people have made their own out of various stuff (wire hangers; music wire I think it is called?; various hardware store stuff) but you have to poke around a bunch of different threads for specifics.

ETA: Also, I wonder how this one would work - http://smile.amazon.com/Beadsmith-T..._sbs_ac_2?ie=UTF8&refRID=01F4A9VQSCYWC4AS2JNQ

It is the best tool I know of to make perfect coils. Especially because you can keep your wire on the spool and use it to tension the wire as you wrap. I pull fairly hard on my spool as I wrap so the wire is very tight.

I still use my torch to anneal and remove machine oils from the Kanthal before I wrap though.

Here's a vid I made on the gizmo:

I have the cheap version and I love it. Pristine coils every time. Although it does waste Kanthal even with the washer and wing nut trick because the legs are always way too long for most applications. I will continue to use it for Kanthal coils, but when I move up to Titanium wire, I'll probably be more conservative due to the cost.

Great post caged! I was feeling the exact same thing! I even taped my 5/64 drill bit in the gizmo and did a hand wrap just to get a micro at the size I wanted. Guess I will prob just buy the other non deluxe set for a quick and easy solution. The 1.5 mm does work really REALLY good though! I love this thing! Thanks again super_X!

You really can make a nice coil, and it's so easy, no muss, no fuss, nice and tight.

I just watched this video, couldn't you tape it to the handle instead of the washer and wingnut setup, or does that keep it too loose still? My hand wrapped coil's are horrible, so thinking about picking one of these up tomorrow.
