Tacoma Wa,
Do you have the "flames" battery or the silver and red BRC battery?

The "flames" battery is an OK battery based on the last tests that I saw. But there is no guarantee that it is the same cell inside as the *fire brands have been known to use whatever is cheapest without regard to any bit of standard when it comes to consistent performance.

My personal view: I don't, and won't, run a *Fire in anything I own. The inconsistency is not worth saving a couple bucks when there are so many other, better, options out there. WillyB pointed me to a good battery with a a high quality Sanyo cell inside. For an unregulated mod, I haven't seen anything with a better discharge profile.

It's in a jacket with flames and sparkles.
Would a magnesium battery be a safer choice? I hear they are less likely to explode.

Safer, yes. IMR is a "more safe" chemistry. But I don't see them as nessesity. A quality protected battery will do just fine.

If you are happy with the performance of your battery, stick with it. The 3000mAh Flames battery is probably the best performer of the *fire brands. But again I can't speak for consistency between batteries. I'm basing my opinion off of a test performed on 2 batteries of the same lot. The concern is the difference between lots. The same tests done on the silver and red 3000mAh batteries from 3 different retailers showed a large difference in discharge profiles. Same brand, same advertised capacity, same wrapper......obviously different cell inside. With a single battery mod, not too big of a deal except they fall way short of 3000mAh and barely hold up to 3amps. 2 battery configuration (series or parallel), very big deal.

I've recently ordered a black Bolt as well, also ordered a couple of Pyrex tanks from Valley Vapes to go with it. I've tried the variable voltage route, I found I vaped everything at about 3.7 anyway, so I thought a Bolt would suit me better.

The Bolt is my first and only mod so far and very happy with it. Got a few dings here and there and it just works without fault, very nice basic long lasting device.

I've had the bolt for a few months almost now and I've posted this in another thread but it's worth repeating. A lot of people have problems with them just quitting working and 9 times out of 10 it's one of the wires inside. They are very thin. In my case, the wire leading to the + pole was twisted until breakage. This was happening from the twisting motion of screwing the device closed or open. Pulling out the white seal-cap inside and resoldering everything then gluing the pole to the cap to stop twisting worked great. No problems since.
I have dropped it on the cartomizer and bent the carto but the 510 connector was fine. It does *seem* to be a softer metal that the connector is made out of than others, though. Mine appears to be wearing out.
I've replaced the button portion of the button assembly and tweaked the travel on the button so that it is a hair trigger (almost) and it looks better, imho. I also tripped the unit down to aluminum. I plan on anodizing it this weekend so I'll post pics of how it looks.

@motelgrim Thanks for the write up, I haven't heard of a lot of these failing but when they do its a wire, like you said. Luckily I have friends who are electricians that can solder haha. My only worry is removing the white seal-cap, no idea how to do it when/if the time comes.

I dont know if this normal but when I got the Bolt I was using Smoktech DC Carto's without any issue. Got the Vivi Nova and used it on and off with the DC cartomisers. The carto's only fired sometime and now doesn't work although the Vivi Nova works perfectly. I suspect its the connection because if I screw the carto in and slowly unscrew it and at a certain point it will fire for a brief second then stop. I believe the Bolt's 510 connection is sealed and made of brass?

I'm guessing for device safety use a 510-510 adapter and mess up the adapter and not the device connection.

Bolt is a great buy. I personally have a roughstack, but the button placement is less than optimal for tanks. Bolt from what I understand is an excellent device for the money and you just can't go wrong with it. I have even considered buying one with a kick, but I already have a Variable voltage device as well. I can't keep buying APV's all the time, but I sure do want to.

Hey Bolt fans...just wondering if anyone could shine a light on this: Had a bolt 6 months ago, smoked the wires, should have kept it but tossed it. Just got another bolt (standard...blue powder coated) and was told by the reseller that Smoketech had improved the wiring (larger gauge). Of course the only way to check means disassembling it which will probably mean reattaching the wire to the positive batt terminal.

So I contacted Smoketech and they claim that the newer Anodized Models will have thicker gauge wiring. That currently only the newer Chrome and Gun Metal had received the wiring upgrades and there have been none on any of power coated models.

Can anyone confirm that, does anyone have a powder coated model with thicker gauged wiring?

Thanks

I haven't opened up mine to look at it but, I think this may be the case. I have one and I've used a kick in and never had a problem. I even put 2 18350 batteries a vaped it at 7.4V briefly. Never had a problem.

Well I have no knowledge of thicker wire, but where did you get the anodized bolt? This is the first I had heard of those.

Ha! I wish. I have not gotten a new anodized one, they have not been released yet. Perhaps in Sept. or Oct. sometime, they said in a "few months". I have a "standard...blue powder coated.

Honestly I would love to have an anodized one with better threads, 20 gauge wiring, and a price of $25.00 for a standard tube (no ring, battery or charger). In a world of $21.00 VV 1000 mAh Twists, $65.00 VV Grippers, and $89.00 Vmaxs, $25.00 bucks for nice, well-machined basic mechanical seems fair.

They look good, I'll definitely be picking up one or two of those when they become available. Can i dream and hope they bring out matching anodized tank caps?

Hey Geek,

Be careful with that 5v Wow, it was sold as a regulated 5v device, but it isn't. It has a very weak (cheap) buck converter. So those freshly charged Tennergy Batts actually register at 5.2 to 5.3v. Match that up with a 1.5 DCT, which varies so let's say it's really 1.4 Ohms and you now have a PV cranking out 20watt pulling 3.78 Amps. That is a huge load on those batteries which have max pulse discharge of 4 Amps. Batteries should only operate at 66% of max to prevent over-heating. I did a pretty extensive video review of the 5v Mod when it first came out.

To be safe I would only run 2.5 ohm standard cartos and 2 or 3 Ohm single coil tank cartos on it. Most folks I know have melted the switches on them before the batts vented.

I just got a chrome with chrome button and I noticed some of the sites selling the chrome and gunmetal ones said they where version v2 or "new version".
And in video reviews eveyone always say the Bolt has a "Clicky" button..but mine is silent and squishy.

So maybe the new ones have a squishy button and the old ones are clicky ones?
I never had a older one so i don't know for sure if the button has changed...but in reviews i can hear the click.
