I agree with DC2.

I see it this way: convicts in prison (the old school, lifers, etc) don't rub well with inmates (the younger generation). The inmates see convicts as tired old farts, and convicts look down on inmates as "punks" with no respect or moral center (ironic, huh?).

While I'm not explicitly calling the younger or newer posters on this forum punks, I can see the mentality (the old school who see this as the one thing that helped them quit smoking real cigs) and the young'uns who never smoked before, or weren't feeling the cumulative effects of smoking for decades, and are only in it to blow huge clouds, man.

My philosophy is live and let live, to each their own, and everybody mind their own damn business. But I am most definitely the "convict", and a lot of these "inmates"... I just shrug my shoulders and say, "Eh."

ETA: While I was a smoker I couldn't care less about how big a smoke cloud I exhaled. Why so now?

i was not going to respond to this thread as i have posted my opinions in other related threads.
but as usual i came up with a new slant.
being that the market in general is still in its infancy when it comes to clones most of us would
not be able to tell one from the real thing. many cities do not have a vape shops. many states have
very few. a poster in this thread mentioned the golden greek wars. i had never heard of them so i
did a little googling. one blog i ran across mentioned a mod(sorry forgot the name) going for
$600 used. Wow. that along with what i have picked up after perusing this forum for a year or
so got me thinking.
.i have read here that the sale for used higher end mods isn't that much lower than new. that
struck me as odd. maybe the newness of the market accounts for it. then perhaps i thought
that the younger folks just have an inflated view of the relative worth of used items. especially
ones some one else has put their mouth on. who buys used body piercings?
i haven't privileges in the sales forum as i haven't had the need to use it but,i bet it would be interesting
for some one to track the ads that has some math skills and figure out what percentage of used
authentic mods are on sale as opposed to what might actually have been sold new in the market.
if one tracked higher end or popular mods with limited runs i am willing to bet the results would
show an inordinate amount of used gear compared to known quantity being sold.
i like 90% of vapers couldn't tell a mannhatan from a fuhattan.
:2c:

mike
An approximate guesstimate figure would be that a desirable authentic piece holds close to 80% of their value. Obviously there are variables such as limited production, condition, market value, asking price, ect ect.

It seems to me the reason this topic gets rolling like it does is because of the hobby aspect. Also people that buy the original are proud of their purchase and who wants it pointed out that their original could of been bought 1.1 on FT for a tenth of the price.

This happens whenever something becomes collectible, or limited edition, or anything hobby-wise. Music, too. Kids love their indie bands until they sign to a major label, then they lose all street cred. Which sucks, because wouldn't musicians like to enlarge their fan base and share their music with a larger audience?

None of this behavior is exclusive to vaping.

The old school establish a beachhead. Things take off. Things take off so fast a younger, newer crowd latches on. The younger, newer crowd likes to hotrod, so they take things to a whole 'nother level. The old schoolers are nonplussed. The dichotomy of old school vs new school then begins. Neither are bad. They are what they are. This repeats in innumerable things, not just vaping.

It is what is is. Nobody should worry about the vape community tearing itself apart. I don't see that at all, and I deal with vapers new and old on a daily basis. Walk to the beat of your own drummer, but let others do the same, too. Everyone's journey is unique and personal.

Personally, I think all talking of rebuildables, mechs, and high amp-limit batteries should be given its own sub-forum, if there isn't one already. If there is one, not a lot of posters in the General Vaping forum are using it.

ETA: I love old school pulp space opera. It's a subgenre of sci-fi that appeared in the early 30's and went on to create almost all of the tropes you see in modern sci-fi. One of my hobbies is collecting old pulp magazines from that era. They are hard to find and almost always in horrible condition. But one day, at my favorite local bookstore, I was going through their collection of pulp mags and I found an issue I'd been searching for for YEARS and YEARS. It was the very first printing of my most favorite story ever, published in 1939. It was, of course, in horrible condition. But there it was, in front of me. And it was only $50! It blew my mind! So I brought it to the counter, paid for it, and after the money changed hands, I told the guy (I already knew him), "I would've paid one hundred and fifty dollars for this copy!" And he said, "Dammit!" :)

No one can tell you what you want isn't worth the money you're willing to pay. No one has that right.

I read these threads for the same reason I watch COPS...it makes me feel better about myself. What a bunch of drama queens crying about what somebody else uses to vape. Who cares? Nobody outside of this forum, thats who. I call BS on the kid saying he's been ostracized at vape meets for using a clone. I've been to plenty of vape meets. This stuff doesn't happen outside of these stupid crybaby threads. I have several ProVari's. That makes me an old fart with too much money and no common vape sense to about half of the members here. I like a kayfun at 1.2 ohms...I'm so yesterday. I also have a 100w Sigelei. I'll put a .3 ohm dripper on there and let er rip from time to time (in the privacy of my own home). That makes me a hipster who's going to ruin vaping for everybody to the other half of the members here. I have several authentic mechs and attys....so I'm an elitist. I have a bunch of really good clones too...so I'm stopping innovation and ripping food out of the mouths of the modders family.
Guess what? I haven't smoked a cigarette in over a year and a half. Vaping saved my life...it didn't matter what I used, it helped me stop smoking. That's what once was important. I signed onto this forum when 90% of it's members respected one another regardless of their setups. The other 10% were entertaining as hell but grossly outnumbered. I'm glad I got here when I did because nowadays, you have to look real hard to learn anything. Weed through all the gossip, drama and judgemental MALARCKY so you can possibly stumble upon a piece of useful information.
Gotta say though...it's entertaining around here.

p.s. the term "Malarcky"was used to pay respect to a former member who provided REAL quality trolling. The influx of whiners is not "GOODNEWS"

I think I've said this before, but I love you man.

"GOODNEWS" The man, the myth, the legend. There can be only one.
Ya know, looking back on it... he was really a unifying force on the forum, and the one thing everyone could actually agree on. lol (Might actually turn out to be the LAST thing, too)

Asbestos, JakeBailey, ah yes. We can sit back, put our feet on the rail, flick beer caps, and remember those good ol days of, like, barely a year ago. In this, that's like dog years. Eras.

I think that while drama can feel like it is subverting the community, in some ways it brings us together. That is, some infighting and derision is inevitable in any large group (human nature 101) and can be a catalyst that propels people to bond on either side of a perceived issue. Friends are made and alliances forged.

Market forces will eventually palliate the dissension. So grab some popcorn and a vape and come back to the forums for more socializing - the good and the bad. And try to be decent to one another, even when you are passionate about the squabble.

I don't see 'the clone wars' as all that significant. I suspect 95% of vapers don't care much and the majority of the noise is coming from the vocal 5%. I certainly don't see this as something that will tear the vaping community apart now or ever. 'Clone wars' have hit most of the other groups out there over the years and as far as I know they have all survived just fine :)

Now, the proposed FDA regulation is something that could really change vaping in the US for a long time to come, depending on what happens with them. That will become big if it's bad and I hope people will come together over that.

Nice post Ryedan. Echoes my point of view pretty much in its entirety.

I remember having a clone discussion / argument about bicycle parts with my buddy about 25 years ago. Tore us apart for about an hour or two.
