I never had protective equipment for anything until skateboarding. I got a new skateboard for my 15th birthday and my dad said we would go the next day and get knee/elbow pads. I rolled my eyes and went out to ride it. Went straight to a friends and tried going over a ramp. Well, I guess tried isn't the right word for it. I DID go over the ramp. The board not so much. walked back home with blood pouring from my knees and picking rocks from my palms. I didn't complain so much when we went to get the pads and gloves the next day.

My parents got me my first motorcycle at 5. I didn't have a helmet.
Taught my best friend how to ride at 6. She didn't have one either.
To this day, she still has a bike! I'm so proud of her! =D
If I ever came home with skinned knees, bloody elbows, busted lip, my mom would call me a doomas and tell me to stop falling off the bike.

Since I usually wore jeans that would mean I ripped up and bloodied yet ANOTHER pair of jeans. I would get yelled at for 30 minutes at least before my mom grounded me for that! ;)

You're probably too young to remember bactine, but moms loved to spray that stuff on skinned knees. It was liquid fire in a spray can, and EVIL.
These kids today and thier safety equipment! Get off my lawn!

We use that and hydrogen peroxide on my step daughters all the time... great stuff!!!

G'nite all... Last student has had their exam graded... time to go home!
