While I was eating lunch, the guy I was with look at the tv over my shoulder and said "Wow. A F/A-18 just crashed in Virginia." My heart sank. There is only one airbase in VA that has F/A-18's, Oceana. My last shore duty station. I turn around, and sure enough, it was from a squadron based at Oceana. The plane crashed into an apartment complex. I pull it up online and see not only did it crash, it impacted in an apartment complex off of Laskin Rd. I know two people that live on Laskin. My heart sinks farther. I call up Mrs E and ask her to pull up the details on one of the news stations in Norfolk. She reads the details to me. No casualties. The pilots ejected in time. Only victims were due to smoke inhalation. Then she says the name of the apartment complex. I recognize it, but know that the guys I knew lived in the area didnt live THERE. And it turns out that that complex is actually off of a completley different road, not Laskin.

Its one thing to look at a tragedy and say "Man, thats terrible." Its a totally different sensation when you know people that could be affected by it... At least there were no casualties this time.

Whats crazy, is that there is NO WAY that no one could look at how the area is laid out and not think it couldnt happen. There are maps of different zones around the base in reds, oranges, and yellows to determine the likelyhood of a plane crash in those areas. Most of them are clearly residential areas. One area of red even includes a large mall.

For decades, builders would ask to build closer and closer to the base. For decades, the Navy said no. For decades, some politician somewhere would say we dont care what the Navy says, go ahead and build those homes and stores so we can get more money.... Today is, I hope, a wake up call to someone with the testicular fortitude to change something about it. It may not happen again anytime soon, but there is no doubt in my mind it will happen again. And when it does, I wouldnt put any money on there being no casualties...

Sorry for the rant. Im done.

How is that possible??? Come here..I wanna physically :facepam: you

That hurts me :( James, I am disappointed in you. *tsk tsk*
I KNOW!!!! I know.... Things havent been going smoothly this week though. That should, hopefully, be able to change very very soon.

Yay, my nails made it through the night.
Theres another thread for that... ;)

James, I'm not liking the crash, but agreeing with the sentiments of your post. I lived and worked in the Tidewater area for 10 years, and was surprised we didn't have more issues with as close as the airfields were to the freeways and other populated areas.
NOB (where you have to literally drive UNDER the airstrip) and NASO have got to be the worst in the country for that. Even Fentress (in the same area) is pretty well cleared out around it. Pensacola, same thing... No residential within a couple of miles of any flight paths. But VA Beach is prime real estate. ...... ignored community safety to make a buck in building the neighborhoods, then for the taxes.

It's a sad truth that money and politics will always trump common sense and safety. James, I am glad your friends were not hurt, but sad for the fact that all of those unsuspecting people are being put in harms way in the name of greed.

Ewwww...
I had the misfortune to be audited one year... after 4 months tons of phone calls emails, faxes etc. they finally admitted that I did not owe them any money...
At the end of the audit they found that they owed ME exactly 35 Cents... and asked me if I would like to start filing the paperwork to collect it... I hung up!
Worse. I have payment coupons. And see you again before 4/17.

I agree completely James. I was based at Pensacola (Corry station not the air base) for training. What you will find though is that money will trump everything in politics I am afraid. I see no way around that unless you have public-financed elections like they do in England though... and that has some of it's own issues. :(

I am very happy that noone you knew was hurt. :) You always have a sinking feeling in your gut when you know that they could be but do not yet know.

You get so used to some noises. We lived under a main runway at Michell Field for years. We never heard the planes. But our poor roofers flattened out on their bellies up there, screaming when the first one went over. Scared them half to death.
Glad to hear there weren't any casualties. I lived in Norfolk for 2 years and had friends that lived near Oceana. Crazy as it sounds, I kinda miss the sound if a jet engine
