Mix - worry not. While it may be frustrating, as with ANY new product, you are in very good hands. Drew and Brandon will make sure you are well taken care of. This thread is replete with posts about the outstanding customer service.

That and colorful tarps and various oils...

Who's the big guy? Birthday?

Welcome Back, Sew!!!! Now if we only find Krispy and Cuse...

(Lovin' the dots, KD? .............)

I would guess it starts out as a block of aluminum, a little more than half a Darwin thick. On the scratched Darwin earlier? While it all seems very heavy duty, I am careful with mine. It's had a couple of falls to a floor, which was nothing. It had one shirt-pocket-height fall to concrete, and another drop of about 10 feet onto concrete. Each of those left a tiny, shiny scar on one corner, where it dug into the aluminum past the anodizing. It looks kind of industrial, in the first place.

Drew doesn't make the Darwin. He just sells them.

I'm sure he could answer your question though

Ah I see. I do a lot of electronics and the such and I'm just fully interested in how stuff like this is manufactured. I've made a lot of inventions and little things over the past 4 years and was just curious how people moved from prototype to production.

Jorad, see the little whorls on the back? On mine, under bright light, on the front, I can also see small whorls inside the recessed design. These were surely the work of a CNC machine. This is a milling machine that is automated. If you're not familiar with it, you know how a drill press can go up and down? Imagine a grinding stone in it, and being able to move it sideways as well as up/down. A milling machine is basically just that, it's mostly freehand, and everything is a one-of-a-kind creation. With CNC (computer numeric control), all the moves are stored, then you just "play it back". You might need to stop to change to a different sized tool for differing places, or the CNC might have multiple tools that it can switch to by itself.

Evolv (or their machine shop) probably just clamps a block of aluminum into it, hits "Go", and the end result is half of a Darwin. They might need to flip each half to do the other side.

The first one I ever saw used punched paper tape to store the 'program', then later on computer media. A co-worker of mine has one at home, it is an amazing thing. Wish I had one!

In the case of solid-body electric guitars (as well as thousands of other things), CNC was a godsend. It made possible very precise and standardized cutting possible, and without the constant attention of a craftsman doing it all by hand. There are hobbyist CNC guys, they swap programs all the time. "I'll trade you my program to cut out an electric guitar body for your model helicopter wheel program.

Made a stop over at long island's probably first of many harbor freights and picked up this cell phone holster pouch for my darwin. Could also hold two emdcc's and a 30ml bottle of juice. A little bulky, but I can see using it at work or maybe mounting it next to the cupholder in my work van. 6 or 7 bux. Also got me a little organizer for atties, cartos, adapters, modding parts. 10 bux

Harbor freight is pretty new to me, a lot of potential modding material! Prolly not the best quality or most eh hem, lead free, stuff but its cheap!

Some humor just for Drew:

The head pharmacist goes out to lunch leaving the assistant pharmacist in charge. When the head pharmacist returns from lunch he notices a 50 year old man leaning against the wall. He asked the assistant what was wrong with the man leaning against the wall over there. The assistant pharmacist says,"Oh that guy.Oh yeah he came in a little while ago with a really bad cough so I sold him a laxative. He seems to be doing ok now..... I guess." The head pharmacist says,"Are you crazy?? You can't sell a laxative to someone who has a bad cough like that!?" The assistant pharmacist says "Well why not?? Look at him over there! Its working! He's too scared to cough now!!....."

Happy Birthday Drew, hope its a great one!:toast:
