The Death of 510

I vaguely recall a few years ago there was a rumour that China might stop allowing the export of vape gear. Can't remember the reason behind it, maybe something to do with the high rate of smoking there. That didn't happen. Didn't they restrict the availability of vape domestically instead?

China was moving towards a more open economical model, but under the current dictator they are moving back to central control, so anything is possible. There doesn't have to be an economic reason for stuff to happen. Maybe The Boss stubs his toe on a disposable someone dropped on the sidewalk and vape is history.

Like others here I don't have to worry about it until I hit 100.

Not that the U.S. has a whole lot of say in Chinese manufacturing, but we recently found (through intelligence agencies) that China's military is roughly fifteen years behind. And horribly corrupt and mismanaged. I think Xi Jin Poohbear has bigger things on his mind than trade policy, like their inability to strike on the independent nation of Taiwan in the event of an uprising.

Possibly, but I do know that the 510's demise has been a prediction since I started vaping. KR808 (or something like that) were new'ish at the time, and were going to replace 510s.

Hybrids were big'ish by then too, and many thought that they would knock 510s out of the park.

Then Zen's, which never took off the way that he wanted it to do.

Then he convinced ProVape to make their own, which would surely supplant 510s.

So, maybe they will go away. In the meantime, there's still a bunch of them (on both sides of the market/aisle). Also, similar to others here, I won't have to worry about it.

My biggest concern is legislation on nicotine concentrate purchases.
If it's really a concern (and it was to me), buy a small freezer and some glass bottles. Stored properly, it seems to last forever. Right now, I'm vaping liquid made in from nic I bought in 2014, and since it's unflavored, I can tell you with certainty that the nic is just fine.

Yep, I think they introduced export tax on vape related and that they made it very much complicated regarding the paper work too. Was at least the main reason why FastTech closed.

Then there are a lot of people who think, how dare they as big as vaping is globally, destroy their own production.
Well, from a Chinese perspective, the vaping industry is a drop in the ocean. Incidentally, vaping is illegal in China.

The Chinese have many other things to worry about, such as possibly a housing crack underway, EU punitive tariffs on everything produced with coal-fired power plants that will be introduced in 2026 (is one reason why the Chinese are the world's largest developer of renewables, but they are also the world's largest on coal).

The vaping industry killed itself when they got on the disposables wave, now that the screw is being tightened on the market, how can they reverse back to what was...

I believe that's true, but as long as it brings in money (Dollars, Euros, etc) from overseas, the CCP will not go out of its way to shut down the manufacture and export of vape gear, whether it be 510, pods, or disposables.

The irony of the CCP having a better understanding of the value of Capitalism is enough to scatter my brain cells...

Yes - if we're still buying, they'll still be selling. Thumbs UP. :thumb:

As a person trying to figure out how to distill liquor at home legally, I understand the hurdles of paperwork being a barrier to entry.

The Chinese most definitely have more important things to worry about. As you say, the vape industry is a drop in the bucket, BUT(!!!) so is the clothes hanger industry. So is the glass medicine bottle industry. So is the ceramic mug industry. You take out enough drops and suddenly the bucket is empty.

Yeah, disposables are a plague. A single use battery which discourages recharging and reuse? Is China trying to saturate U.S. landfills with lithium?

Aside from the topic, I've always said that landfills will be the most rich mineral source in the future.

So what happens when the cheap China stuff goes away?

IMHO: that will KILL most vendors/markets. Even the Tobacco companies stuff is made in China.

This may lead to a SURGE in demand for whatever stockpiles of 510 gear that might exist and when that dries up, then what?

While there has always been a large margin on 'equipment' but the real profits has always been in the juice.

IDK: when I see others vaping, fewer and fewer are using a 'mod' with 510 to do it.

If it comes down to 510 stuff having value, well, that would be nice. Retirement plans are hard to come by these days. ;)

Worst case, the demand exceeds the supply and 510 equipment gets expensive. The market incentives CNC shops to make new products. We'll probably see more crazy stuff like bus bar atomizers again.

How funny would it be if Zen dusted off his lathes and started pumpin' out 510 Kabukis and whatnot again?

My guess is the FDA wouldn't be amused, so it would have to kept on the down low.

Besides, the Kabuki wasn't rebuildable was it? IIRC, it used Nautilus coils? I could be mistaken; I never had one. Anything meant to be used forever has to be rebuildable. That's what got me started on rebuilding very quickly back in 2014. I was never gonna let anyone take the miracle that got me off cigs away from me.

Yessir, but he was always ADAMANTLY anti-510. GREAT guy who made some GREAT stuff, but was also borderline obsessed with knocking 510s out of the game.

I always figured that, as an early vaper, he had a 510 tank break off, and NEVER forgave it.

He made rebuildables too. One of the early ones actually. My mind's blanking out on the name, but it was quite popular.

    DAMMIT! Now it's bugging me.

I have experience rebuilding arguably non-rebuildable atomizer systems. Started with cartomizers and my most recent 'replaceable coil' rebuild was on a TFV8 product. Diminishing gains, but it *can* be done.

That Nautilus thing they came out with was hilariously small. I think it was called the "VVTF" (?), which quickly morphed into "VVWTF".

In fairness, a lot of 510 mods are upselling temp control, but how many of us use SS or nickel wire, these days? So far as it dying? I don't think it will ever happen. At least not in my lifetime. Might become inconvenient due to liquid mixing stuff becoming inaccessible, but the technology won't cease to exist.

My goodness! I remember similar systems. $2 Polycarbonate genesis style atomizers come to mind.

Me too. Pro-Tank heads. They were good for one new coil. After that, they tasted of burnt rubber. I suppose the solution would have been to use NR-R-NR wires, but I saw no sense in that vs. using an atty that was meant to be re-built and would happily run on plain resistance wire.
