you are ware that back in the early days smoking was considered to be healthy ? early 1900's to the late 70's people believed it was beneficial.
look at the old advertisements...

smoking was made glamorous by tv, BT, and retail stores so they could make a profit.

Hmm. I think anyone who really really wants to quit smoking or do anything that is hindering their lives can do it. Otherwise, there would not be millions of ex smokers on this planet. It may not be the easiest thing you have ever done, but it is certainly doable. You cannot be enslaved by anything you do not allow yourself to be enslaved by.

I honestly agreed with this in the not so distant past. Drug addicts, over eaters, alcoholics, whatever, I felt deep down that if they really want to quit, they could. But then I realized that if I couldn't quit smoking, how in the world could I believe that. I tried NRT's to handle the physical addiction, but I always returned to smoking.

Sure there are millions who have quit smoking, and drinking, and over eating, etc., but I would say there is an equal number, at least, who want to stop but can't. I'm not blaming anybody or anything, it's just the fact that some people just can't let go of their vices, no matter how hard they try. I was one. If this makes me weak, then so be it.

Perhaps you're one of the lucky ones that can give up your vices at the drop of a hat, but others aren't so fortunate.

All I can say is in my era from Fred Flintstone to .... Van ...., it was the thing to do.

Edit: LOL! "Richard's" nick name gets censored!

Lol on this forum he is to be called Richard Van ..... I'm actually a little surprised it doesn't show up as ... Van ....

Yes, smoking was very often portrayed in tv and movies as normal, often glamourous, sometimes rebelious, but never dangerous. We've come a long way in learning and teaching the dangers of smoking but have we gone to far? Is it really fair that in the state I live the law says a smoker can't legally smoke downtown (unless he's 20ft away from a building, so middle of the street is a ummmm safety zone?) I can't vape unless 20 ft away from a building to because ecigs were included in the smoking bill. Have we come to a point as a society that we hate smokers so much we block them from healthier alternatives?

I'm curious, Mr. Van .... I remember smoking a pipe on the show. What did Fred Flinstone smoke? Whatever it was I'm sure it was rocktastic.

I did romanticize cigs. Anybody reading this ever try Davidoff cigs? Whoa! I remember I had quit ( I started quitting at 21) and broke down by bumming a Davidoff and took a regular drag. I was Soooo dizzy and my nose actually buzzed. Had never happened to me like that before.
They are just a little fatter than usual and not stinky like Gauloises, which is another one that was "cool" to try. Hack hack. Gross cough.

Although I might in other aspects of my life, I really didn't get into any philosophical or psychological inquiries shen I decided to stop smoking. My esophagus was starting to hurt, and my mom was gasping for air with advanced COPD from smoking.

But I liked the OPs post, turning things over in hand like a coin. Examination is always interesting, if you have a curious mind.

Certain vices seem to enjoy being a social norm depending on era. Watch this, which is fun---drinking and smoking were just part of the every day:

Great video. Read through some of the comments, and I found this one that I love: "If you want to look bad ... wear a leather jacket and smoke. If you want to look important/high class wear a fancy suit and smoke. Yes it's that simple."
