Imagine a desktop CPU the size of your phone... that you can carry in your hand, plug into a TV or flatscreen, pop a keyboard/mouse on and take everywhere with you... do a Google search, it's unrealized potential is really magnificent =]

I want one. I want one. I want one. Nowwwwwwwwwww!

Ok now for us computer ......s (wait not politicaly correct) mentaly challenged .. What the heck is a raspberry pi

Raspberry Pi | An ARM GNU/Linux box for $25. Take a byte!

What is a Raspberry Pi?

The Raspberry Pi is a credit-card sized computer that plugs into your TV and a keyboard. It is a capable little computer which can be used in electronics projects, and for many of the things that your desktop PC does, like spreadsheets, word-processing and games. It also plays high-definition video. We want to see it being used by kids all over the world to learn programming.

Speak to WarHawk-AVG =] He posted the case link from fasttech earlier, along with some other items. I did see the raspberry pi listed for everything from $35 to $55, electronic stores to Amazon =] but share your experience and ideas, please... I'm still trying to decide what I would use one for LOL

Well...they are small computers but they aren't ultra powerful desktops...but they ARE capable enough to do some things

Raspberry Pi Owncloud (dropbox clone)

In fact, I am currently tunneling thru my Raspberry pi at this time :D

There is a VERY large learning curve...it's not plug and play...Linux

Here is a pretty neat all in one computer
http://www.mdpub.com/pi/allinone/index.html

There is ALOT you can do with these...
http://www.instructables.com/id/Raspberry-Pi-Projects/

I was actually going to setup an apache webserver and host my own images like photobucket from my own home network...really not that hard with a "basic" webserver

Thank you all for the ideas and the links! I've been over to the official site and love the concept for kids and me (being half little old lady and half little kid). I learned Basic and Pascal in the early 80s and found it really interesting. I'm thinking too of an orphanage library some of my medical friends (and I, at long distance) are supporting in Togo, and the enormous possibilities spreading inexpensive but effective technology knowledge could have. Seriously worth thinking about and developing.

so you just bought the pi-b with card holder and added it to the plastic box no soldering? then all you have to do is plug it into tv and plug keyboard into it? does it need earthlink or is it wifi

A Beginner's Guide to DIYing with the Raspberry Pi

Yes, the little computer is all together, just took the image, put it on the SD card plugged it in to a 1A 5vdc USB power source, HDMI to my TV, USB KB and Mouse...and voila

It has 2 USB plugs on it so a wireless mouse/kb combo and a wifi usb would be best

The box was just a case to go around it, and yes it's like an acrylic jigsaw puzzle, once it clicks together it's pretty solid

Yeah...I'm a tinkerer..an already built system is alot more user friendly and less "hassle"

A lot of people use them as media centers, running some incarnation of XBMC. Often combined with some kind of automated torrent/usenet downloader.

Where they shine is low power consumption, low price and small form factor. Where they don't shine is computing power. No offense, but they're quite far from a desktop CPU the size of a phone. An actual smartphone is closer to a desktop computer in terms of computing power than a Raspberry. A smartphone don't cost $35, tho :)

It is very much a special interest kind of gadgety thing. It's more of a computer geek (which is a good thing in my book) tinkering toy (in a very good way!) than it is a consumer grade utility like a "normal" computer.

If you want a small form factor computer with fairly low power consumption, more closely resembling a "normal" computer, look into the Intel NUC line... or similiar. They cost quite a bit more, tho.

Sorry for the off-topic!

wow...pretty stout little getup! quad core and 2gig ram...bet it's a screamer! You should get AnTuTu benchmark android app and see what it's specs compare to

Last Christmas we got our kids a kindle fire (not the HD)
I reaaaaaaaly am going to try one of these days and put a Qi inductive charging receiver coil patch in them...so sick and tired of them loosing the micro USB cords, just put a Qi inductive patch in em, tie it in to the USB +5 and grnd pins and then all they have to do is place the kindle on a Qi transmitter and the darn thing will charge!

Got really ticked off with my KFL. It kept leaking out of the air hole. I would fill it, and juice would come out of the top, and all over my lap! I tried taking out the filler screw before putting on the drip tip, thinking it was a pressure problem. Nope. Come to find out, the o-ring at the top of the chimney is a hair too big. I tried shoving that o-ring in the circular space in the top cap, so the top of the chimney would fit snug with it, and it worked beautifully for a few days, then the draining into my lap started again, so did the flooding! Turns out, the o-ring would pop out of the space, when I tightened the top cap, and the ring would go down the chimney, letting the juice drain out of the top, and messing up the pressure. Not good. If that o-ring stretches a hair, the whole kit n kaboodle is useless.

Are you putting some PG, VG, or e-liquid in the space in top cap that holds the o-ring? I find it essential. After the o-ring is snug in that space, lube it up completely. I usually use the fill screw for the KFL, but I fill the Kayfun 3.1 ES from the top by removing the cap. I've never had the o-ring stick to the chimney or fall out of place. :2c:

With all this talk of flashlights... There's been a couple of minor power outages in the area recently, so I picked up one of these "just in case". The 1400mA version:

$16.99 Convoy S2 Cree XM-L T4-7C 2-Group 3/5-Mode EDC LED Flashlight - 1*18650 / AMC7135*4 / carrying strap at FastTech - Worldwide Free Shipping

I know nothing about flashlights so I wouldn't know if it's best ever or not. Seen mention of Cree-thingies being good, tho. All I can say is it lights up very well when I press the button. Seems sturdy. I'm happy.

Very good, the 1400mA driver only pushes the XM-L to about 1/2 it's full potential, but will NOT overheat if run at full power, they have one with a driver of 2800mA which is 200mA less than the max of 3A they can handle, a knowledgeable gentleman at a "budget light forum" **cough** BLF **cough** told me the 2100mA would be more than enough.

Many say the Convoy is one of the better "budget" rigs...it will serve you well

I have a LONG way to go, but I am definitely learning, the driver on that flashlight is a AMC7135*4, which contains a flash-able microcontroller called an Amtel ATtiny 13A (yeah a teeny tiny computer!), you can download custom firmware and make it do ALOT more than just those two sets of modes [it takes quite a bit to reprogram and flash that tiny IC though], PLUS you can actually add more of the 7135 current regulator chips to that driver if you wish to boost the output later on.

1122401-5.jpg

See the 8 pin IC, that is the Amtel ATtiny 13A, the smaller black ones are the current regulators controlled by the microcontroller, yours will only have 4 soldered on, it can hold up to 8

I started with a 1/2 dozen of these [Sipik SK68 clones, referred to as the "bic lighters" of flashlights], they can use regular AA [alkaline, NiCD, NiMH] or 14500 Li Ion (they also make EXCELLENT gifts!)

I also got it's "bigger brother" as well (18650), SK98, or SH98 (remember everyone and their mother in law clones them)
But they throw ALOT of light for being so small and

Just so you know, I have this inbound once they get back from thier week long PARTAY in China

Yours will have a Color temperature: 2800-3000K (a little "yellow", mine is more "neutral" white (pure white), higher numbers have a "blueish" hue to them

I'm more than happy. My reasoning was that I would rather have longer runtime than brighter light. Now that I've realized you don't have to run it at full power... I could just as well have picked up the 2100mA one. On the other hand, it's still brighter than any of the multi-cell NiCD torches I used as a kid. Got a feeling the runtime is better, too. And now I can actually afford to buy my own batteries! Hah!

You can buy "laptop" batteries and gut them, they contain EXCELLENT 18650 cells inside them that are MORE than capable of running LED lights (not so much for vaping) I bought 20 Sony batteries for $30 from a guy that gutted some "throwaways"

IMG_0268-800.jpg

These are the EXACT same batteries I got

Be VERY wary of the ****fire high mAh batteries, some of them are fakes (this is why it's IMPERATIVE for vapers to get KNOWN good batteries from KNOWN good vendors!)
