There is a very interesting thread/discussion which I came across recently on reddit. Similiar in spirit to my "China Hate" thread.

Now some vapers will agree with the opening post, others will not. Some will accuse people who bring up these subjects as being "troublemakers" and seeking to sow discord amongst the vaping community.

I, however, am of the opposite opinion. There ARE divisions/factions within the vaping community. There ARE issues and problems which need to be addressed. The best solution to a problem is nevert to cover our ears, bury our heads in the sand, or otherwise pretend like they don't exist. "Don't talk about it and it will go away!" is what they say. "If two groups of people are at odds, the best solution is seperation/segregation". Is another commonly held belief.

WRONG. The best solution is to confront the issue and discuss it intelligently. We must seek to understand the problem so that we can reach a resolution and move beyond it.

The author of the thread/discussion is describing a very real chasm/gulf which exists and it appears many vapers are lining up on one side or the other on the issue. I see it all over the place.

The dictionary defines the word pretentious as follows:

1. Claiming or demanding a position of distinction or merit, especially when unjustified.

2. Making or marked by an extravagant outward show; ostentatious. See Synonyms at showy.

I cannot repeat the opening post here because of the language (which the forum software will likely censor), but here is the link:

[moderated]

I am very interested in hearing the opinions of ECF members, from both sides of the argument. We must ask ourselves several questions?

1. Are people indeed being pretentious?
2. Does such an attitude exist? Or is this just this one person's imagination or perception?
3. Is the author seeking to "cause trouble" or "gain attention" by posting this?

Please help me to understand....

I started reading all the comments, but then, I realized I was on reddit.

I think that it is noticeable, but I wouldn't go far as saying pretentious. People in the reo and provari community are so about getting everyone on board with them, no matter what, but they're not douchey about it..majority of the time. Plus, when the people that were turned on to that fancy new thing, they are excited about it. I would actually use, ecstatic. I could see how people on a forum would pick up on that being pretentious, but I'm not one to post pictures of what I get. Unless, there is a thread started asking what goes good with ____ that I may have..

I will say that when I finally get my semovar, I will be modeling the hell out of it. My first one will be in a bikini on the hood of my car, with an "oh" face...maybe a duck face, haven't decided. I'll leave you to decide if that will be sexy and informative or not..:)

In every hobby(and that is what vaping can become for some) that I have been involved with in my life, there are those that do it to show off, those that need to be 'leet', those that spend the money because they can and it satisfies them, those that spend only the bare minimum to make them happy, and those that complain about those that 'have more stuff' then them.

That is life, not just vaping. You name the 'hobby' and the above types of people are involved in it. /shrug

I read the first page of the thread at reddit. Seemed to be much a do about nothing. Follow up commentary was mostly irrelevant with a lot of foul language, which is one of the reasons that I don't go to reddit.

The OP was ranting about something that he observed. I don't see anything pretentious about the majority of posts here on ECF, which is why I choose ECF. Reddit is not as well-moderated as ECF is.

I feel like whenever there's modification and people compare so called "performance" or "stats", there will be elitism. Whether it be a video game or car modifying community. Those who put in the money and time in their "superior" product will protect what they have and are proud of it while others who don't care as much or want to spend less money and time on it will do as they please. And when these groups of people meet in an online setting, such as a forum, people will start bashing each other. The elitist will say to the people who buy fake stuff they're ruining the community while the people who don't care as much for spending time nor money will say that those who spend the money and time are pretentious elitist. This happens in all kinds of "competitive" environment online as it is so much easier talking smack online than in person.

I don't care if other people don't get a Reo or ProVari...lol

I can love my own without being "elitist". Could it be that some people confuse loving one's PV with being elitist?

There is a bit of pretentiousness in the vaping community at times from what I've seen on the forum. But that's part of life. I don't pay attention to it. There are always going to be people who try to impress other people with their stuff or think that they're better because of 'stuff' they have. Like myself, I'm sure there's many posters who can easily afford to buy a $400 MOD if we wanted to. We just don't feel the need. And for those who do, hey, great. Whatever floats your boat.

Now, this is a Tesla that impresses me.

I loved the small conversation a few people had in that thread about seeing a vaper in real life. Because I WOULD do the same stuff IF I ever found someone else vaping LOL.

As far as being pretentious. I could not care less what you are using. I am jealous of the people with like a bunch of REAL caravelas but at the same time I don't need them. My Hcigar clone Nemesis does the same thing as a real one and I can afford it. So it makes me happy. I drive a Chevy not a Benz and I am happy as hell to have it. So you do what makes you happen and who cares about what others have. Sometimes I have to say that out loud to myself when I see things I REALLY want but cannot have but that is life. Work for what you want and you will eventually get it if its within reason.

The ones that make me angry are the idiots that don't read the OP and can't shut up about what they use. A good example is when a noob comes in and says they only X amount of dollars to spend, and all the idiots can do post over and over 'ya gotta get this', even though most of the time its 2 or 3 times what they have to spend. Ahh well, you can fix ignorant, but you can't fix stupid.
