Ewwwwww I hate patchouli !!! Smells like a grateful dead concert where people use to spray that stuff because they haven't showered in days. You kicked up some horrid memories.

Actually I think the real reason people used patchouli at Dead concerts was to cover up the odor of the smokeable stuff we can't talk about here on ECF.

Patchouli is a love-it-or-hate-it scent. Some of my perfume-loving friends can detect it at parts-per-million levels and it absolutely gags them. In small amounts it gives depth and lasting power and earthiness. I love it to pieces even in pure form.

Anybody else vape ry4 nutzilla.

joec,

Nope. Never vaped it. Never heard of it before your post.

Googling doesn't come up with much. Seems to be some sort of Frankenflavor put together from multiple FlavourArt flavorings, is that it? Available only from a site called FlavourartUK.

You'll need to tell us more.

I guess Sandy is a a patch hater then.

Vapebar's RY4 has been received, diluted to 50% PG/VG, shaken vigorously and put aside to mature. Of course me being me I couldn't resist a teeny tiny taste. It is a nicely full-flavored "classic" blend with lots of the cotton-candy sweetness of ethylmaltol. If I were to vape this right now it would be nice but a bit bland. Hack recommends steeping for at least a week after mixing and says the tobacco "becomes stronger with age". We shall see, but could this be another dark horse from Down Under?

Smooth, flavourful with a nutty touch, and then a real kick of a throat burn afterwards. Must say though, my most recent batch doesn't seem as potent in flavour as usual. Don't know if it needs to be left to settle for a while, or I have got use to it now. I think it is only via flavour art and a few other uk vendors.

specs: The 18ml bottle of RY4 I purchased from HitLiquid contains a golden-colored transparent juice at “high” nicotine strength in an all-VG base.

Begin rant: I don’t like imprecise word-based designations for nic concentration---in this case, high/medium/low/none. Is HIGH 36mg, 32mg, or 24mg? Is MEDIUM 20mg, 18mg, or 15mg?? Is LOW 12mg, 9mg, or 6mg??? (At least NONE is obvious.) Calling all vendors: We want numbers for choice of nic concentration in either mg/ml or percentage. Sure, I could contact HitLiquid and ask what the correspondences are, but I shouldn’t have to ask. End rant.
Testing was done using a 2.8 ohm Boge SR carto powered by a Young-June black chrome Mini Vtube set to 4.4 volts (which is probably closer to 5.0 volts, given the PWM Vavg/Vrms mis-calibration), delivering wattage somewhere between 7 and 9 watts, depending on the true voltage (which I can’t measure). Vape intensity felt like about 8.5 watts.

The product page offers no vendor description. Three user reviews---all 5 stars---mention qualities such as “good flavor, full of flavor, good tobacco taste, fresh premium tobacco, spice, non-sweet, and not overly sweet.”

HitLiquid RY4 is---to my palate---a custom RY4 that leans as far as it can toward classic RY4. The overall flavor profile is close to classic, with one significant exception: the tobacco is much stronger than in a typical classic RY4. For my tastes, this is a good thing and reminds me of CrystalELiquid RY4 Double Tobacco in its ingredient proportions, although the caramel in HitLiquid’s is not as rich. That puts it in very good company. The flavor of the tobacco is pleasing, with no off-flavors, great bite, and a slight spiciness.

The caramel and vanilla are balanced and blended (meaning that they taste more like one composite flavor than two separate ingredients) and serve as support for the tobacco. They’re not lost in the background, however, so that the end result doesn’t feel tobacco-heavy. Instead, the potency of the tobacco shines through, but is augmented by the subtle blend of caramel and vanilla (no nuts).

Throat hit is impressive at “high” nic, and the the all-VG base produces vapor like a fog machine, although the caramel and vanilla might be slightly diminished by the absence of PG.

Dessert RY4 lovers can look elsewhere, because HitLiquid RY4 has almost no sweetness. Even the all-VG base doesn’t provide much, if any. That almost total lack of sweetness is interesting and rare. Some vapers will like that, other’s won’t. Personally, I think the juice would benefit from a slight bump up in sweetness. Just my opinion.

Overall, this is a very solid RY4, especially for tobacco aficionados.

Zeus’ RY4
specs: The 10ml bottle of Zeus’ RY4 I purchased from ZeusE-Juice contains an amber-colored transparent liquid at 24mg nic strength in 50/50 pg/vg base. Testing was done using a 2.7 ohm Boge SR carto powered by a Young-June black chrome Mini Vtube set to 4.4 volts (which is probably closer to 5.0 volts, given the PWM mis-calibration), delivering wattage somewhere between 7 and 9, depending on the true voltage (which I can’t measure). Vape intensity felt like around 8.5 watts.

Vendor’s description from product page:

“Our take on the classic RY4. We blend the perfect amount of four different tobacco flavors to being you this complex but smooth RY4 blend. Undertones of caramel and vanilla are prevelant in this vape but not so much that they are overpowering as found in some RY4 blends. Absolutely lovely the way we do it.”
Zeus’ RY4 is a custom RY4 all the way, and a decidedly odd bird to boot. Taken positively (and literally), that imagery might bring to mind a multi-colored Toucan or a tropical parrot with brilliant and amazing colors. Taken negatively, it could mean a Dodo-bird, a creature so weird that extinction would be inevitable. As I vape Zeus’ RY4 during the writing of this review, I go back and forth between the two viewpoints.

I take a toke, and my brain says, “Man, is this weird or what?” Then I take another toke, and my brain recants, “No, wait, there’s something here that’s interesting and good.” My best guess is that the culprit or hero---you pick---is the tobacco. As far as I’m concerned, there’s nothing wrong with blending four different tobaccos for a complex composite end result (juicemakers blend different tobacco varietals often), but whatever these four individual tobaccos are and however they’re blended, the end result is not only complex, but elusively odd as well. Tasty one minute, strange the next. But maybe it’s not the tobaccos. Maybe the oddness comes from the sweeter flavors, the caramel and vanilla (no nuts). Or perhaps it’s the overall mix. I just can’t tell.

All I can say for sure is that if you like really unusual RY4s, you might give Zeus’ RY4 a try. As for a grade, I’d give it 50% B and 50% D. (Guess what my composite grade will be?)

ZeusE-Juice Zeus’ RY4 grade: C

Creamy RY4
specs: The 10ml bottle of Creamy RY4 I purchased from ZeusE-Juice contains an amber-colored transparent liquid at 24mg nic strength in 50/50 pg/vg base. Testing was done using a 3.0 ohm Boge SR carto powered by a Young-June black chrome Mini Vtube set to 4.4 volts (which is probably closer to 5.0 volts, given the PWM mis-calibration), delivering wattage somewhere between 6.9 and 8.9, depending on the true voltage (which I can’t measure). Vape intensity felt about like 8 watts.

Vendor’s description from product page:

“We love this creamy take on the RY4. Mild, sweet caramel cream tobacco eliquid that is sure to please the taste buds.”
After the shock of Zeus’ RY4, the calmer experience of Creamy RY4 is something of a relief. As you sit on a park bench eating your lunch, Zeus’ RY4 is a guy wearing a tinfoil hat who rushes up and confronts you, shouting something about aliens infiltrating his brain. Creamy RY4 is Zeus’ cousin, but he wears a Fedora, sidles up to the park bench more quietly, and sits down beside you, saying “Don’t mind my weird cousin, he means well.”

Creamy RY4 is also somewhat eccentric and idiosyncratic, like its loonier relative, but the oddness is in how smooth and creamy it is, just as its name suggests. This is also a custom RY4 all the way, but it’s more like an RY4 milkshake. What a brilliant idea!

I don’t know if similar core ingredients are used in Zeus and Creamy, but the substitution of the “sweet caramel cream” makes the end result hugely different (and better, at least in my opinion). It’s still somewhat odd, but it’s a good odd. Tasty and soothing. (Do those two adjectives go together? Here they do.)

I’d be willing to bet that in a blind taste test, most people would choose Creamy RY4 over Zeus’ RY4, mainly because---where vaping is concerned---human beings tend to prefer pleasing over challenging. If you like Zeus’ RY4, I’d recommend stocking up now, for my hunch is that the current formulation might not be around too long. On the other hand, Creamy RY4 is probably here to stay.

You often use the terms Classic and Custom in reference to RY4 eJuices. Is there any other parallel nomenclature?

Cool,

Early on in the thread, I felt a need to distinguish two types of RY4s---not categories, but more fundamental types. For awhile, I used the terms RY4 versus RY4-variant, but those terms proved inadequate for numerous reasons. At some point, I stumbled upon the terms Classic RY4 versus Custom RY4 (can't say for sure whether I thought them up, stole them, or received them as divine inspiration in a dream). Over time, those two designations have become the standard shorthand for dividing the two main types of RY4 here on the thread.

What are the characteristics you find that distinguish them? A refresher might be enjoyed by, and useful to your audience.

Cool, my friend, you seem to have a penchant for inadvertently urging me to do much more work than I want to. So, rather than taking the additional hours necessary to compose yet another novel-length post (LOL), I'll offer a link. From the Vaping Commentaries section of The Big RY4 List:

Determining Classic versus Custom RY4s - post #1873

An additional consideration I thought of while writing the reviews today is that sweetness (or lack of sweetness) is not a quality "owned" exclusively by either type. There are sweet (dessert) RY4s in both the Classic and Custom types, and similarly, there are non-sweet RY4s in both designations. In other words, sweetness is a quality identified within the Category Groups of RY4, rather than being linked to one of the two overall TYPES of RY4.

I'm sure we could write about this at great length (in fact, we already have), but people who read the thread consistently already know what Classic and Custom mean, while most people who come by sporadically and read only a page or two of the thread won't see most of what we write anyway. They won't track with the gradual evolution of the thread. Put bluntly, I care about the people who are here on a consistent basis. While occasional visitors may be nice, they are not my constituency. We could leave 100 posts about Classic versus Custom, and those occasional visitors would still not know the difference.

MyVapeCreations RY4 and CigaRY4

specs: The 10ml bottle of RY4 I purchased from MyVapeCreations contains a very pale peach-colored transparent liquid at 24mg nic strength in 60/40 pg/vg base. The 10ml bottle of CigaRY4 was the same, except for the color: golden amber rather than pale peach. I steeped both bottles with caps off for one week inside a dark cabinet before trying them. Testing was done using 2.8 ohm Boge SR cartos powered by a Kicked Bolt set to 8 watts.

Vendor’s descriptions from the respective product pages:

MVC RY4: “Our own take on this classic, a special blend of tobacco and notes of caramel and vanilla are used to create this classic e-juice flavor.”

MVC CigarRY4: “Our deep, flavorful Cigar flavor used in combination with Vanilla and Caramel to create a special take on the classic RY4.”
I really wanted to like these two custom RY4s. I like the vendor’s name, I like the descriptions, and I like the labels on the bottles. I think the very idea of a cigar-flavored RY4 is brilliant. So, naturally, I wanted to like the juices. Unfortunately, that didn’t pan out here.

These are both tobacco-strong RY4s, which is generally a category of RY4 to which I personally respond with pleasure and approval. MVC RY4 uses a Marlboro-type tobacco flavor, while their CigaRY4 uses a straight cigar flavor with more grit and punch. They both tasted synthetic to me, which should be OK, except that my palate wasn’t particularly impressed by either. That’s a subjective reaction, of course, but I like a lot of different tobacco flavors, and neither of these were among them.

Also, the other ingredients---caramel and vanilla (no nuts)---seemed weak to me. I’m not sure if the mix ratios were off (stronger tobacco should not imply weak caramel/vanilla) or if the flavorings themselves were thin-tasting rather than rich. All I know for sure is that my palate wanted more caramel and vanilla. Or perhaps it was the conspicuous lack of sweetness combined with a slight sourness that got in the way of my enjoyment. Sourness is a rare quality in RY4s---only Janty and a few others contain a sour element. I like that a lot when it serves to counterbalance the sweetness, adding complexity and contrast. Here, however, there is very little sweetness to start with, so the sourness has almost nothing to balance against. I think both juices would be improved by the substitution of sweeter caramel/vanilla flavorings, or simply by adding some sweetener to the recipe.

Reviewing juices I like is easy; reviewing juices I don’t much like is hard. I don’t relish giving bad reviews, especially when that might undermine the efforts of hard-working vendors trying to make and sell good juices. So, whenever my review leans toward the negative, I usually end up doing a lot of comparison-vaping with other RY4s, in part to make sure I’m not just having a bad day taste-wise (since that does happen---taste buds go wonky every so often), but also to remind myself what great RY4s taste like by contrast.

I did that here. I comparison-vaped both of MyVapeCreations’ RY4s side-by-side against a whole bunch of other top-rated RY4s: RWVapors, Janty, VaporTalk Dulcis, Apollo, VaporBeast, Vapor....., and CrystalELiquid. There was simply no question. Compared to any of those wonderful RY4s, MyVapeCreations’ RY4 and CigaRY4 fall short---far short. To me at least, they are average at best.

The grades given for these RY4s are my opinion only. They are also current judgments and may differ from grades I gave in the past. So please understand that if you base a buying decision solely on this list, you might end up getting an RY4 that I like rather than one you’ll like, since my tastes and palate are unlikely to match yours perfectly---in some cases, not even remotely.

Within each grade, the RY4s are listed in alphabetical order. This kind of judging is ridiculous enough without splitting hairs or nit-picking between RY4s within the same grade.

For vendor links and original review post numbers, as well as Category Groups, please refer to the most recent update of The Big RY4 List.

Did I mention that these grades are my opinion only? LOL.

As a footnote to my review of MyVapeCreations RY4 and CigaRY4, I added two drops of AltCig Sweetener to each carto. I didn't want to start messing with the juices in the bottles---once altered, they can't be changed back, of course---so using the filled cartos was an easy and safe way to experiment.

I don't know what kind of sweetener AltCig uses in the little bottles it sells---Sucralose, ethyl maltol, or something else---but I figure if it's good enough for AltCig's talented juice-mistress, Boodle (Sunny), it's good enough for me.

The results seem promising. To my palate at least, both RY4s have been improved by making them sweeter. Not dessert sweet, just somewhat sweeter to see if better balance might be achieved. And it worked.

If I were grading, I'd say that MyVapeCreations RY4 was improved with a little sweetening by three steps, from a C- to a B-, while CigaRY4 moved up two steps, from a straight C to a B-. If the folks at MyVapeCreations happen to read the review and this post, please consider adding a little sweetener to both your RY4s. And for people who buy either of MVC's RY4s but don't love the juices, know that a little sweetener can rescue them quite nicely.

I won't change their grades on the Big RY4 Report Card, however, since these two cartos are now technically Frankenjuices. LOL.
