"For whatever it's worth, I'm not bowled over by any of TFA's RY4 flavorings. For DIY all-in-one RY4 flavorings, FlavourArt and Hangsen RY4s are my top picks, followed by Mom&Pop RY4 v2 and Want2Vape RY4. TFA RY4 Double and RY4 Asian aren't flat-out terrible---some people like them a lot, and I think they're acceptable---but all four I just mentioned, and especially the first two, are far superior, at least to my palate."
I ordered the two DIY picks they will be here friday just in time heading to Dallas saturday morning for the Dallas/Green Bay game on Sunday. Any hint on the % to start out with Bill.:)

Have you figured out where you like the Mom & Pop Vapor shop DIY flavorings?

Bill, have you figured out where you like the Mom & Pop Vapor shop DIY flavorings?

dude,

I haven't yet mixed up any of the M&P flavorings you so generously sent me, since I already have half-full bottles of the various retail versions. Those are all getting pretty long in the tooth, however---my entire stash of retail M&P juices is two to two-and-a-half years old, so it's probably time to put those old guys out to pasture.

I'll start experimenting with mix ratios of the M&P flavorings and add them to the RY4 Flavorings page, along with recommended mix percentages, for the late January update of The Big List.

[Edit: I see on their flavorings page that Mom&Pop recommends mixing at 20% for all their proprietary flavorings, same as Want2Vape's standard mixing recommendation.]

As Keeper of The Big RY4 Lists, I’ve been---how shall I say?---less than thrilled with the distribution of the 144 RY4s (which includes a couple RY1s, RY2s, and RY3s) that currently appear on The Big RY4 Report Card.

The problem---as I see it---is that too many RY4s are in the five upper grades (A, A-, B+, B, and B-). As of the last update, 94 of the 144 RY4s on The RY4 Report Card were clustered in those higher grades. Only 50 RY4s were in the seven lower-graded groups (C+, C, C-, D+, D, D-, and F). Responsibility for this lop-sidedness falls squarely on my shoulders, since I’m the person giving the grades.

On the one hand, we might conclude that this is a good thing, that we are blessed to have so many higher-graded and presumably better-quality RY4s from which to choose. On the other hand, perhaps the skewed distribution curve is a disservice to vapers and reflects my own inability to grade on the curve.

I’ve thought about this for some time, and I’ve decided to re-shuffle the grades to achieve a more even distribution. What this means, essentially, is that I’m moving a significant number of RY4s down a half-step, to a lower grade than they’ve been getting in past updates of The Big List. In a perfect world, a grade of C should indicate that a particular RY4 is average---not bad, but instead firmly in the middle of the RY4 pack---and that’s what I’m trying to achieve with the re-assessment.

Ordinarily, I’d wait until the next two-month update of The Big RY4 List in late December to post the new grades in The RY4 Report Card. Since I’m talking about these new grades today, however, I’ll publish the reformulated Report Card today, in the next post.

Keep in mind that none of the RY4s has changed. The juices are all the same. The only difference is that the distribution curve of grades isn’t as skewed toward the top as it had been previously. Now it’s a more normal bell curve, with a bulge in the middle and tapering ends. The A and A- groups still contain substantially more RY4s (25) than the bottom D+, D, D-, and F groups (12), but that's because it's much easier on my psyche to judge an RY4 as superb than it is to judge one as crap.

The Really Big RY4 Report Card

Below is my list of grades for 144 retail RY4s, reshuffled to reflect a more even distribution curve.

The grades given for these retail RY4s are my opinion only. They are also current judgments and may differ from grades I gave in the past. So please understand that if you base a buying decision solely on this list, you might end up getting an RY4 that I like rather than one you’ll like, since my tastes and palate are unlikely to match yours perfectly---in some cases, not even remotely. Conversely, you may like an RY4 to which I've given a low grade.

Within each grade, the RY4s are listed in alphabetical order. This kind of judging is ridiculous enough without splitting hairs or nit-picking between RY4s within the same grade.

For vendor links and original review post numbers, as well as Category Groups, please refer to the most recent update of The Big RY4 List from November 25th.

Did I mention that these grades are my opinion only? LOL.

I'm sure I am not the only new vapor that uses this reference, along with Natural Tobaccos and Top 5 Vendors lists as

THE STARTING POINT 4 PRIMO JUICES

That said I finally have a sauce that got bludgeoned into a grade C and another that I can't stand into an A-. Rather than the result of anything like it being FRIDAY THE 13th I'll just chalk it up to your bell curve and a difference in genes.
or at least budds. :D

thanks for the effort and the help it gives us all.

Nothing wrong with a reshuffling to put some separation between the juices you consider top of the heap, from those you just think are ok. I haven't been vaping all that long but the only juice I'd rank an A, one I consider perfect, is actually two juices together. I have found that HHV Heavenly Tobacco (C+ in your rankings) and ECBlend RY4 (B in your rankings) mixed together at 50/50 is the perfect RY4. I have a 15ml bottle which I carry on my at all times filled with the mix, and it never fails to impress.

Independently I would give them higher grades than you do anyway, I think Heavenly tobacco is Tribeca-esque and is just as good as the Halo product. The custom ECBlend RY4 is my favorite stand-alone, Vapor's Knoll RY4, Mr Vape RY4 and Heavenly Tobacco next. Then I'd go Tribeca and Hangsen RY4 in the next tier, then Mad 4, MFS RY4 and Vapor For Life RY4 in the last tier.

I ordered the ECBlend Spicy RY4 on your recommendation, letting that steep for about two weeks before trying. Then I plan to try at least one RY4 from the big list a month until further notice. Next up is the ITC Vapes RY4 since that is a local joint, and pretty much everyone who has tried it says it's great.

Anyway, great stuff as always. :thumb:

Lombaowski,

Frankenjuicing is one of the great unexplored (or at least undiscussed) areas of RY4. A little of this RY4, a little of that RY4, mix-mix-shake-shake, and voilà! You've created your very own personally-tailored RY4. The results are sometimes yum and sometimes meh, but always fun to do. It's a great use for the RY4s in one's stash that don't hit the spot. Frankenjuice them!

Altering with the flavor profiles of retail RY4s by adding DIY flavorings is another pastime to put otherwise funky RY4s to good use. Add a little caramel flavoring, or vanilla, or bavarian cream. Convert a classic RY4 that bores you into a custom RY4 that you like by adding a bit of your favorite tobacco flavoring, either synthetic or NET. Or go exotic and use unexpected flavors: cinnamon roll, strawberry cupcake, malt, or menthol. The sky's the limit.

What's important about The Big RY4 List isn't the grades given on The RY4 Report Card. Those are, of course, just one guy's opinion. No, what's important is having all these RY4s collected in a single location that anyone can access.

More thread discussion of RY4s compared-and-contrasted would make me happy. For instance, what made you think to put together HHV Heavenly Tobacco with ECBlend RY4? Was it just that you had those two RY4s, or did one lack something that the other provided? How are they different? How are they similar? How does your Frankenjuiced HHV-ECB RY4 taste?

Most of the time, posters don't go into much depth about the RY4s they're vaping. They tend to just report what they like or don't like, and while that's OK, it doesn't take us very far. Not that I'm dissatisfied with the thread---I'm not. It's given me a heck of a lot of "street cred" on ECF and with vendors, and I like that. I'm grateful to all the folks who help keep the thread going. Just sayin' that it is whatever we make it.

Oustanding !! That's exactly what I've been doing with all those graded juices that put me off. Frankenjuicing Absolutely un-scientific juice swirling.

After waiting and high expectations for Gambler from MOV, I was not happy with the hazelnut. What to do? What to do?

Then I remembered that the leftover sample flavors I got from Halo (Torque, Captain Jack) got thrown into a 10ml bottle and mixed with Halo's Voodoo. I don't know what I ended up with but it took out the harshness and made the swill vapeable.

So... 2 stoppers of Gambler and 2 of Voodoo and voila ! No Nuts Frankenjuice. Either GamDoo or VooBler, not sure which but steaming off of a hot coil as I type. Very, very vapeable.

As stated. non-scientific method, ymmv, but I may self convince to start measuring and tweaking more of my less than lovely juice to my satisfaction and sharing... I got some Dekang RY4, DK TAB and Johnson Creek Red Oak Tennessee Cured that needs my help. Maybe the 50ml Hangsen too. Jury is still out on it, steeping, steeping.

Starting a Frankejuice thread in the D-I-Y Forum may be a winner, at least to some who understand the juices and percentages for mixing better, but it would need some posting RULES and probably a lot of 'em. Reliable swirlers could be mods.

I doubt that DIYers would appreciate a Frankenjuice discussion in their forum. While mixing ready-made juices together and spiking them with flavoring is a form of DIY, it's not the make-it-from-scratch variety which is the point of the forum.

I suggest starting a thread in the General E-Liquid Discussion. It will get more views, appreciation and responses there.

And I have several mixes to add, myself.

I agree, Max.

The DIY Forum is for juices made from scratch, with flavorings/concentrates, neutral bases (PG/VG), and liquid nic.

Frankenjuicing---whether achieved by mixing retail juices or by adding flavorings to a retail juice---is a different animal entirely. The general problem of "taste being subjective" (i.e., the fact that brains do not perceive and/or appreciate flavors the same at all) is even more emphasized in Frankenjuicing. Certainly bell curves do exist in flavor perception, but the differences between individual brains are sufficiently pronounced that "objectivity" with regard to juice flavors is effectively impossible. This is further compounded by additional factors: when multiple flavor components are combined in a juice blend, when presumably the same juice flavor is mixed with different base ratios and nic percentages, and when vapers are describing juices that are supposedly the same but were hand-mixed in different batches or produced at different times (in which the sources of the flavorings had changed).

For instance, caramel and vanilla flavorings from different manufacturers are produced in many variations, none of which are identical---FlavourArt's are not the same as TFA's or Nature's Flavor's.

For me, Frankenjuicing is something I do to try to salvage juices I don't love by themselves, and it's always basically a crap shoot or shot in the dark. I have as many failures as successes, if not more. The saving grace for me is that if I combine two retail juices I didn't love or add flavoring to try to improve a questionable juice and end up with a "new" juice that's still lousy, it's no big deal. I wasn't going to vape the original juice or juices anyway, so I haven't lost anything.

I admit that once I got into DIY and Frankenjuicing in a big way, leaving well enough alone with my retail juices became more difficult. I'm inclined by temperament to experiment with juices, and once I could, I did. But that's OK with me. If I inadvertently ruin a fairly decent retail juice, I can always order more, and if I trash a DIY juice, I just go back to the drawing board and start over.

I don't generally Frankenjuice retail RY4s, simply because my "job" here is to compare them, so I tend to leave RY4s as I got them, like 'em or not. I do play around with DIY RY4s quite a bit, though.

Vaping is about fun and enjoyment (or should be), and whatever enhances those experiences is fine with me.

Not to toot my own horn, but tooting away. 1 year strictly vaping for me today. Granted, I have gone longer without a nasty killing stick before, but NEVER not always craving one. So I call this a major milestone for me, and I have to thank EVERYONE here for helping me. Yes, I follow other threads (Natural Tobacco, several DIY threads, etc), but thanks to everyone here I have found a flavor profile I love to explore and if the urge ever struck in the past I knew what to puff on. An RY4! So milestone for me, grand thank you to ALL! Home tomorrow to try my Butterfly's (have dripped some and very promising!), Mr E-Liquid, and several others. They should be steeped by now.

tooting done, back to regular scheduled programming..... Thank you each and every one of you. It will be 2 years before I know it!

I just discovered it by accident. I had an Artemas carto tank that had about 1/4 tank left of ECBlend RY4 and I decided to refill it. At the same time I was preparing my work EVODs and one of them was Heavenly Tobacco, so I had the two juices out. I had an issue with the tank tool and was adjusting it and just grabbed the wrong bottle. As I was adding Heavenly Tobacco to the carto tank, I realized my mistake. So I filled it up about half way figuring it as gonna be ok since I liked both juices anyway. Well it was better than ok, so here we are.

I've mixed together all my good RY4s, Tribeca with Vapor's Knoll Our-Y-4 is probably my second favorite and the Mr Vape/HHV Heavenly Tobacco mix was good also. Some didn't work (Hangsen and Mad4 for example) but Tribeca is a juice you can mix with just about anything (really good with Voodoo for example). If you take an average RY4 like the one from MFS and drop about 15 drops of Tribeca in, that juice becomes above average. Not that I don't enjoy Tribeca or Heavenly tobacco alone either, I vaped some Tribeca today because I was in the mood. Frankenjuicing just gives me more options I suppose, and in the case of my favorite juice, got me something I enjoy very, very much.

ETA: Tomorrow will be six months without a cigarette!!!!

Thanks for the idea about Tribeca. I like it alone very much and have quite the stash, so I will experiment. Voodoo is already in use as a modifier and has worked well every time.

So I got my ITC Vapes RY4. Took the cap off and went to eat dinner, came back and the whole lower level smells like this wonderful juice. Dripped some to taste, nutty and well-balanced for sure. I'll wait to fully judge for ten days or so when it gets into a carto tank.

Now they haven't opened their B&M yet, which will be about 20 miles from my house making it the closest B&M to me. Funny thing is they charged me $1.99 shipping, it would have cost me $4 in gas to drive there!

Since the 50ml bottle of Dekang RY4 I purchased from HealthCabin is now two years and four months old (and still almost full), I decided to pick up a new 30ml bottle of Dekang RY4/DK-4 during the recent GoodProphets Dekang sale/clearance. It was available only in PG, which I believe is probably 80/20 PG/VG. That's the base ratio of my HealthCabin bottle.

Guess what? They're the same juice. Identical. I comparison-vaped each by atty-dripping, and I can't tell any difference at all. My HealthCabin bottle was 26mg nic strength, so the nic potency may have faded a bit over time, but it tastes exactly the same as my new GoodProphets Dekang DK-4 at 18mg. I discern no difference in flavor profile or overall taste.

I don't know if GoodProphets intends to continue carrying Dekang juices, so I won't add it as a separate entry to The Big RY4 List. I'll leave the List as it is now, but it's good to know that Dekang has apparently changed only the name (from RY4 to DK-4), rather than the juice itself.

I will make one change for the next update, however. Dekang RY4 has been in the A- group on The Big RY4 Report Card, but I'm not that impressed by either version, new or old, so I'm docking it by half a grade down into the B+ group. Yes, I still regard Dekang as a good Classic RY4 (whatever they call it), but it's really far less impressive than any of the Classic RY4s in the A group, and those in the A- group (Elixir RY4, JoyeTech RY4, LiquidXpress Taboo, and Vapor'sKnoll OuR-Y4), all strike me as more tasty.

Go figure.
