This list was really a huge help to me as I just started vaping and got off the Analogs 10 days ago. I ordered the G6 E-Cig to get me going to make sure I liked it and some Tribecca from Halo. I honestly loved the flavor a lot, not really good at describing flavors like some of the people on here but I thought it was excellent, does cause some dryness in my throat and mouth as it seems to be a rather high PG liquid. I do love the sweetness of this, and I swear I taste a little nuttiness in iit along with the caramel and tobacco. I am currently waiting to receive the Butterfly’sEJuices Butterfly’s RY4, TheVapor’sKnoll OuR-Y4, VaporTalk Dulcis , IIndigoVapor Indigo Classic, and I just received the Mr Vape RY4. Like most people on here I love the smell and taste that RY4's give off and could not resist trying it. I can definitely taste the caramel and vanilla in this one, and it is already tasting pretty delicious. The flavor is not nearly as pronounced as the Tribecca that I have but Halo says they pre-steep their juices for a little bit before sending them out so I am sure it will taste even better in a few weeks. One question I did have for you though Bill is you had said your Mr Vape was Golden colored in your review and mine is clear like water almost. Should I be concerned or do you still think with steeping it will change color?

Daniel,

First off, you need not be concerned about the color of your Mr.Vape RY4. Over time, vendors may change the source flavorings of their retail juices, so the color of the liquid may be different, even if the flavor is almost exactly the same.

Also, eliquids often darken with age. Not all, but many. It's no big deal. My current 30ml bottle of Mr.Vape RY4 was golden when I first got it in June 2012. Now, 20 months later, it has turned a deep caramel color. It's still transparent, still tastes the same, but has morphed into an almost auburn tint.

Personally, I would love it if all my juices were clear and colorless. If you don't like yours being colorless, I'll be happy to swap my full 30ml bottle for yours. LOL. Anyway, assuming your particular Mr.Vape RY4 tastes good, you can relax and enjoy vaping it.

Thanks for the quick response Bill, really appreciate it. It is already tasting very good and I am very excited about how everything I bought is going to taste in a month or so. As I said I just started vaping so I've never had a chance to steep anything yet. I appreciate the kind offer of the swap of your bottle for mine, but it would not be fair as I only ordered the 10ml I believe is what it is to start out. Like you said everyone has a different palate and I wanted to make sure I liked it(can't believe I thought I might not), but I am thoroughly enjoying what I put in my 1ml clearomizer quite a lot and will be ordering a 30ml bottle soon. I actually ordered 2 bottles of the butterfly RY4 as I had ordered the smaller bottle to try and was on their site this morning since I seem to not be able to sleep and noticed that they are having a 40% off your entire order until the end of the day sale, so I couldn't pass it up as I'm sure its yummy and the deal was to good. Again thank you for the offer, but if you did want to in the future swap as I will be buying a 30ml of it in a week or so I would be up for it that is if its something you want to do as I assume some of your RY4's are getting old and you worry about them not getting vaped. If not no worries, I have lots of steeping to do anyways. : )

I've actually heard clearer is better for the coils so I was not worried because of that I was just worried that maybe something was off as I kind of ignorantly assumed all RY4's would have some color to start out.

The Big RY4 Report Card

The grades given for these retail RY4s are my opinion only. They are also current judgments and may differ from grades I gave in the past. So please understand that if you base a buying decision solely on this list, you might end up getting an RY4 that I like rather than one you’ll like, since my tastes and palate are unlikely to match yours perfectly---in some cases, not even remotely. Conversely, you may like an RY4 to which I gave a low grade.

Within each grade, the RY4s are listed in alphabetical order. This kind of judging is ridiculous enough without splitting hairs or nit-picking between RY4s within the same grade.

All-in-one RY4 pre-mixed DIY flavorings/concentrates---with mix percentages, Report Card, vendor links, and review posts

Mixing Percentages
The key to making good DIY RY4 from Pre-Mixed RY4 flavorings and concentrates is knowing how much (or rather, how little) flavoring to use. Flavorings require a higher percentage; concentrates work at lower percentages. Use too much of either and you will ruin the juice. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Start out mixing lean. Then---if necessary---add more flavoring very sparingly. Test-vape after each small addition of flavor. Keep in mind that the flavors will “bloom” with steeping---a DIY RY4 that seems to lack flavor when new may magically mature into full-flavor after two weeks, so exercise both patience and restraint.

When making a small bottle of DIY RY4 (6mls or less) using a very concentrated flavoring, adding even two drops to an existing mix can be enough to wreck the flavor profile. Increase the flavoring only one drop at a time. Remember: Less is best, and more is not necessarily better. Err on the side of using too little flavoring rather than too much! Below are my recommended percentages for different brands of RY4 flavorings:

So, I bought a 30 mL of Tribeca today since it's been so long since I had it -- since the days of the strong "Purity" taste of Halo's tobaccos. Maybe my memory is playing tricks on me (which often happens), but not only do I not remember it tasting this good on day one, but it is also reminding me of Hangsen's RY4 (maybe Classic? Dunno. I order mine from CaterpillarVapes).

I know I have talked with bill about Halo's Purity base being very much toned down from the days of old, but I don't really remember any talk of Halo and Hangsen as being related.

I have noted some similarities between Hangsen's Highway with Halo's P15 and it's more than just being both 555s, but I am finding Halo's Tribeca to be very close to the Hangsen RY4. This is not my terrain, so I imagine that RY4 connoisseurs are more sensitive to the differences between them and may find my assertions off. I tried delving into the thread to find discussion of the two, but the searches for both send the search engine into a frenzy.

Is there others that find the two close, or am I just caught up in the classic RY4ness of it all?

First off, your Hangsen RY4 is authentic. I've never heard of any counterfeit Hangsen, but I seem to recall CaterpillarVapes stating that their Hangsen is authentic, and I have no reason to doubt that. I bought my Hangsen RY4 from VaporBreak, a Chinese vendor, and mine has the relatively unique Hangsen bottle and cap, as well as the correct label.

My first 7ml bottle of Halo Tribeca (purchased from IndyVaporShop in 2012) took six months to "de-Purify" and get yummy (which was a big surprise when it occurred, since I had rejected Tribeca early on as simply more Halo bug spray. The larger bottle I bought in mid-2013 (actually three 7ml bottles I snapped up on the cheap from vapok.com), however, was tasty and terrific from Day One. Apparently Halo wised up and stopped putting hospital disinfectant in it. LOL.

Are Halo Tribeca and retail Hangsen RY4 twins separated at birth? To find out, I did a comparison-vape, very quasi-scientific, using identical delivery systems for both---3.0 ohm Ultimate CE2 clearos powered by identical VAMOs each set to 9.0 watts RMS. yes, I know, CE2s are a now-antique JDS (they are no longer made), but I still have a stock of about 25 still pristine Ultimate CE2s that I like for comparing RY4s because their flavor production is very accurate.

One difference is that Halo Tribeca is a Custom RY4, whereas Hangsen RY4 is a Classic. Hangsen RY4 is, according to some speculation, a slightly tweaked version of the mythic "lost" Dekang RY4 from 2009, which was itself an altered version of the original Janty RY4 created in 2007. [Hangsen's chief flavorist might be the departing Dekang flavor chemist who absconded with the formula and subsequently served a term in prison for that offense, but was hired by a waiting Hangsen upon his release; don't take that as gospel, but it's an interesting theory...] Hangsen RY4 has the Classic quality of its component flavors being so completely balanced and well-blended that they merge into a single overall taste. By contrast, Halo Tribeca has the Custom quality of more independent flavors, in this case, a slightly dominant caramel. So that's one difference.

In addition, the experience of vaping each juice differs. Hangsen RY4 kicks off the inhale with a strong bite (at least at 24mg nic, which both of my juices are), followed by a slow but steady sensation of the unified flavor that continues through exhale. Halo starts off with rich, independent flavors (tobacco, caramel, and vanilla) dancing together. Only on exhale does the bite kick in.

Finally, Halo is ever-so-slightly nutty---which may be inherent to its synthetic tobacco rather than a separate flavoring---while Hangsen has no nuttiness at all.

Does this mean that I think that you're crazy? No, not at all. The differences between Halo Tribeca and Hangsen RY4 I discern and note above are perhaps more substantive than mere nitpicks, but they don't serve to make the two juices foreign to each other. If we play down the Classic versus Custom distinction, which is designed more as an aid to classification rather than a tattooed identity, then an undeniable similarity exists between these two RY4s.

I wouldn't call them twins, or even brothers, but I'd go so far as to acknowledge them as cousins.

An interesting sidebar is that I switched their positions in today's bi-monthly update of The Big RY4 Report Card. Hangsen RY4 had previously been in the A group, with Halo Tribeca a half-step down in the A- cohort. Last week I vaped them both and decided to reverse their grades, which I've now done publicly. I don't know if your bringing them up is coincidence or serendipity, but either way it's timely.

Totally serendipitous.

After all this time of vaping you'd think I'd knew better, but alas, I didn't. What I am talking about is that when I made the post earlier, I was only vaping Tribeca. Later on when I vaped Hangsen's RY4, I realized what happened is that I was going off of the afterimage that Hangsen's RY4 left in my mind, not the lingering taste on my palate -- the two are not always the same (memories are funny like that). I don't know if that's happened to others, but it's happened to me. It's almost like seeing a certain pic of Mikhail Baryshnikov at a certain age and remarking on how much he looked like Anthony Hopkins at a similar age. It's not that they didn't have some similarities (because they surely did), but when faced with the actual faces, the similarities are much less resolute and what was thought to be really alike starts to dissolve a bit.

Tribeca, for me, is the clear winner, but only in that it builds upon Hangsen's RY4 with a spunk and jubilation (it's a little more "free" -- yeah, Tribeca dances. ). I like them both, but just like with Highway and P15, the cost of Hangsen's liquids may just speak louder to me than crisper colors of Halo's liquids. At less than a third of the cost, Hangsen's RY4 and 555 will suit me just fine (though this Tirbeca is definitely yummy!)

p.s. I didn't think CaterpillarV's Hangsen wasn't authentic, but I thought Hangsen had a bunch of different variations of RY4 and I wasn't sure which one I had as it only says "RY4". I think, though, I may have confused Hangsen with Janty.

p.p.s. We're in agreement here -- Halo did not used to taste good like this while being fresh out of the box. Not at all!

I spent some time today with four Custom RY4s---two from MountainOakVapors, a third from MyVapeJuice, and the fourth from Janty.

MountainOakVapors (MOV) sells three retail RY4s. Their first offering, Classic Country RY4, is good, but not one of my personal favorites. MOV’s subsequent pair, the NET-based Full Virginia Flake RY4, and their most recent offering, Gambler (renamed Rambler in the new diacetyl-free version) are impressive, although quite different from each other.

MOV Full Virginia Flake RY4 is all meat-and-potatoes. No salad, and no dessert. FVF RY4 is solid and substantial, which is simultaneously it’s great strength and slight weakness. if you want the essence of RY4 in a well-blended juice that uses a natural tobacco flavoring, MOV FVF RY4 fills that bill nicely. If you want excitement and stimulation, however, FVF RY4 is not the right choice. The flavor, while beautifully balanced, is all base and mid-range. No treble. No brightness. Bassoons rather than trumpets. Still, it’s a true workhorse RY4 and a very good one at that, enough so that I just bumped it up to the B+ group in the Big RY4 Report Card.

My discussion of MOV FVF RY4 calls to mind another NET-based RY4 that appeared in the marketplace at about the same time a year or so ago---MyVapeJuice Rogue RY4. The two juices share a strong similarity, so much so that they are almost interchangeable. Rogue RY4 has a bit more impact, while FVF RY4 is a little smoother. One or the other might win out by a nose, but that's likely based more on the personal preference of a particular vaper than on any objective criteria. Both are worthy additions to any natural tobacco lover's RY4 stash. Vaping MVJ Rogue RY4 today head-to-head with MOV FVF RY4 necessitate moving Rogue up to the B+ group alongside FVF.

To borrow the immortal words of John Cleese from Monty Python: "And now for something completely different." MOV Gambler/Rambler and Janty 2010 RY4 are cousins. Each has an unusual flavor ingredient that strongly influences the flavor profile and sets the juice apart from other RY4s. With Gambler, that ingredient is Hazelnut. With Janty 2010, it’s Pine Seed.

This is Janty's 2010 version sent to me by our colleague KentC. Of all the slightly-tweaked iterations of RY4 sold by Janty since they marketed the first-ever, original RY4 in 2007, this early-2010 version is the most unique. Most Janty RY4s can be considered Classic in flavor profile. The 2010 version, however, is definitely Custom, because it uses a rare and unusual Pine Seed flavoring as one of its components. This flavor is nothing like typical pine (like Pine-Sol). Instead, it has a soft muskiness that is more a modifier than a flavor on its own. No other Janty has it, and---to the best of my knowledge---no other RY4 or, for that matter, any other retail eliquid ever made uses that flavoring. I might speculate that Janty stopped using it in their RY4s for either of two reasons. One reason might be that the pine seed flavor is idiosyncratic and does indeed shift the overall flavor profile away from Classic RY4. The other reason might be that the flavoring became unavailable, at least in sufficient quantities to maintain retail production. [That’s what killed BackwoodsBrew RY4---Don’s inability to dependably source the rare flavorings used in that very popular and much-loved Custom RY4.]

While the Holy Trinity of tobacco, caramel, and vanilla is present in both MOV Gambler/Rambler and Janty 2010, their respective added ingredients push the flavor envelope of each far into Custom RY4 territory. A fair number of RY4s have a nutty element, but none that I can recall tastes like Gambler. The particular synthetic tobacco used in Gambler combines with the Hazelnut to produce a unique flavor. While I’m not usually a hazelnut fan, I love it in Gambler/Rambler, which is why it’s in the A group on the Report Card. Janty 2010 is grouped with the other Janty RY4s, all of which currently earn an A- rating from me.

Many juice vendors sell Custom RY4s that stretch the traditional RY4 flavor profile by the addition of other flavorings, but that’s not as simple as it sounds. Few do it with the expertise and delicious results of MOV Gambler/Rambler and Janty 2010 RY4.

Mixing Percentages
The key to making good DIY RY4 from Pre-Mixed RY4 flavorings and concentrates is knowing how much (or rather, how little) flavoring to use. Flavorings require a higher percentage; concentrates work at lower percentages. Use too much of either and you will ruin the juice. I cannot stress this strongly enough. Start out mixing lean. Then---if necessary---add more flavoring very sparingly. Test-vape after each small addition of flavor. Keep in mind that the flavors will “bloom” with steeping---a DIY RY4 that seems to lack flavor when new may magically mature into full-flavor after two weeks, so exercise both patience and restraint.

When making a small bottle of DIY RY4 (6mls or less) using a very concentrated flavoring, adding even two drops to an existing mix can be enough to wreck the flavor profile. Increase the flavoring only one drop at a time. Remember: Less is best, and more is not necessarily better. Err on the side of using too little flavoring rather than too much! Below are my recommended percentages for different brands of RY4 flavorings:

Yesterday I was adding more cabinets with drawers to my Juice and Hardware Wall, and as I reorganized my RY4 drawers---all ten of them---I came across a CE4 clearo filled with my own homemade DIY Chinese Classic RY4. I screwed the clearo onto a Kicked Bolt, took a hit, and Damn! It was terrific!

I've been vaping this clearo on and off all day today, and I'm still impressed. My foray into making RY4 from scratch---both NET-based Custom RY4s and synthetic tobacco Classic RY4s---transpired over spring and early summer of last year, but I didn't remember making any RY4s that were as delicious as this. I suppose it's possible that a long steep improved this one. If so, the improvement is dramatic.

A number of our colleagues who are long-term thread participants here have tried their hands at making RY4s from scratch, and some of those DIY RY4s have turned out well, but I'm truly shocked that I made this one. It's really great. It's easy to make a bad DIY RY4 from scratch---most of us who've tried have encountered that disappointment. Making one that's good is much harder than it seems, and it's as rare as hen's teeth to make one that's truly great.

Luckily, I have the recipes on file for all the RY4s I made last year, and I even have a 30ml bottle of this particular version (Classic #10). The bottle is labeled "Bill's Pretty Good Chinese RY4." Maybe I'll change the name to "Bill's Really Great Chinese RY4." LOL.
